I have been noticing over the past few weeks that many settings I have go away after a reboot. For example, I have the quick link toolbar turned on and ordered a certain way, After reboot it's gone and when I turn it back on, it is ordered in the default, although shortcuts I added to it are there. I just bought a new 22" monitor with a resolution of 1600 x 1050. All is fine, then I reboot and the fonts are odd and the highest resolution available to me is 1600 x 900. If I reload the driver and reboot, it fixes it. It's almost as though things are not being written to the registry. Ideas? -Jim

Hi all, can anyone tell me how to get rid of three cookies sitting in my temp internet files directory? I've been able to delete all others but these - they're from retail sites (e.g. buy fencing direct, etc.) and all have expiry dates ways into the future. Thanks, chrissyd.

Somewhat off topic...... Windows 3.x thru Windows 98SE had the slowest defragger. I finally learned that I could install the DEFRAG.EXE from Windows ME. Finally there was one that worked fast. I just installed Windows 2000 on another computer. I see once again MS went back to the slow defragger. Not only that, but the older versions (Windows 3.x thru Win98se) showed the process in a graphic and showed the percentage completed. The one in 2K dont show anything except some colored bars, and I have no idea what percentage is completed. What a useless POS. Can I install the defragger from WinME in Win2K? Every time I open a file that uses media player the computer shuts down and restarts. I can open media player itself and it opens fine until I try to play something then it shuts off. I just installed service pack 3 although I don't know if this is related. I have tried uninstalling MP11 and reinstalling didn't help. Any ideas?

Hello everyone, My problem is that my computer wont get to the desktop because it is so rooted with viruses and what not (the windows loading screen finishes then i get some message and a blank black screen), so i would like to clean install windows xp but when i search for clean install/boot on google and microsoft it says i must go to the start menu for the first step in the procedure. Is there an option for me to clean install as i cannot get into windows? also i have windows xp academic upgrade, and the full version on W98, would this mean id have to install 98 and then XP ontop of it? I have a folder that allows access to certain users. Is it possible to have that folder prompt for a user and password when people try to save files to it? It would need to prompt them when they are saving from excel or word as opposed to somebody trying to copy a file into it. Is this possible? Thanks, Jasper

For some reason I lost a hard drive although I can access the data on the drive through microsoft digital image it does not show up in my computer.It is not showing up in disk management. I am using XP Pro SP3. Thanks in advance

Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 - On a 2nd DC, I'm unable to load software when I'm signed on as network administrator. The error message indicates that there are insufficient rights to perform the install. AD replicates normally and I'm able to access all network shared folders.

Dear Newsgroup I cannot establish a remote desktop connection on my Windows XP Pro base unit (10.0.1.241) from my Windows XP laptop (10.0.1.242). Connection is an internal one only on 10.0.1.x subnet via router. Windows Firewall has been switched off, checked that port 3389 is listening with netstat -a, RD is swithced on, check that relevant services are running, even moved the RDP port from 3389 to 4489. Hi: I am running XP on an XP DeskStation P4 which auto updated tonight. When turned on the xp login password was initially not recognized with several restarts required. On first succesful restart it appears that the system is running on an old IBM preload NTFS partition and not on the old second preload partition. Restore point to last pre-auto update did nothing. I wish to move the XP Home OS from one partition on disk 0 to the primary partition on disk 1. Is there a simple way of doing this or does one have to re-install again from scratch, please? I recently upgaded my service to a 20 Mbps cable speed through my provider. Realizing my old modem was only DOCSIS 1.0 compatible, I went out and got a new Motorola SB5101 modem than can handle DOCSIS 2.0 and upstream speeds of 30 Mbps. I can only seem to get a maximum speed of 7.2 Mbps. The cable company says an acceptable level should be around 12 Mbps, and after calls to their tech support line they cannot seem to figure out why I can't connect at a minimum 12 Mbps. They said the connection is excellent with no packet loss. I do have a router, but when I hook the cable modem directly to the computer it gives me the same max speed of 7.2 Mbps. I also tu…

I have been experimenting with Firefox 2 and downloaded the latest flash player which was 9.0.124 or something like that. No complaints from the installer, but the outcome was pretty ugly. Corrupted video and bringing the browser to a crawl, I barely got it closed before it locked up my system. Going to the system requirements page, firefox 2 was not listed for windows 98 for this version of flash player. Anyone know which player will work with 98 and FF 2? Thanks

Two Questions; Background: I like to manually search for, select, and install updates. Somehow, XP Home Edition -- SP3, has decided that it will automatically download updates and then tells me it will automatically install them unless I use a particular shut-down link when I shut down. I turned off the automatic download feature in Security Center. Q1. Where does XP Home Ed. store downloaded updates so I can eliminate these extra updates I don't want? Q2. Something has changed in the configuration of Explorer on my machine. When I click on a _folder_ in the right hand window of Explorer, a Search Results report window opens. Why is this? This is a recent development. My Win'XP instatalation disk no longer works. I get to the end of the disk and no changes have been made to the installation. The important thing I have noticed: 1. The term 'Deleting Folder ??" now takes place for about 10 minutes. This is new. This is followed by a few minutes of "Creating File", which is usual. Please help! I have windows movie maker and I've tried importing video in order to edit to make slideshows but it's not what I'm after.
