Moving CA questions

Good afternoon, We have a Enterprise Root CA setup on a domain member server (Windows server 2003 R2) and no subordinate at this point. This server hosts our Exchange 2003 server. I'm not super familiar with Certificate servers, but shouldn't this should have been setup on a domain controller? I discovered this because our DCs are giving error messages about KDC certificate is now invalid (see below for the full message). I don't want to effect the certificates that are already distributed. Any suggestions? **************************************** Event Type: Warning Event Source: KDC Event Category: None Event ID: 20 Date: 8/15/2008 T…

Screen resolution
by Guest Mikeymay- 2 replies

A few months back my HDD drive failed and have just recently got a new one and got my laptop up and running again. Looking at the desktop and when using IE, the screen resolution looks different to how it was pre HDD failure. I am aware that you can change the resolution by right clicking on the desktop and using the propertied menu, but there doesn't seem to be as many choices for the screen resolution. The minimum resolution is pretty cr*ppy and my eyesight isn't that bad yet and the maximum seems to stretch everything (not to distortion levels, but just doesn't look right). I can't remember the available setting as I am at work and don't have lapt…

Hi all, I'm the volunteer IT guy at a small charter school, all computers are XP Pro SP2. One of my teachers just installed an older program, it did not offer to install for "all users", she installed under the "teacher" profile which is an admin acct, but I need to link it to a limited acct for "students".. is this possible? Is it as simple as dragging a shortcut to the "student" desktop folder? ... or do I have to install to the "student" acct. (which would mean changing it to an admin acct long enough to install at least), and then after changing it back would it still likely work? Is there any other options to "fix" this? thanks, niteowl

XP Cleaner virus
by Guest Mel- 2 replies

Hello, I googled for information on something and one of the sites I went to made my computer suddenly come up with a warning that my privacy had been violated, possibly had a virus etc. I have since learned that this is itself a virus. I did not d/l it but just clicked the X, it however started to try to d/l. I think it was caught in the Zone Alarm I run but I want to be sure. I searched how to find if I had a problem but cannot find any of the exe files and any HKEY that have "XP Cleaner" in them. Someone told me to restore to an earlier date which I did. When the restore was going through it asked me something like.." allow system restore eve…

I work with persons with disabilities and want to use handwriting recognition on a trackpad with Windows XP Pro SP2 v.5.1 on a desktop. I am able to install handwriting on the language bar and use the drawing pad. However, even with Writing Pad or Writing Anywhere checked those applications do not load. Is there a way to use handwriting with WinXP Pro, rather than WinXP Tablet PC?

Managning Administrator Account/Password on XP
by Guest dareys- 10 replies

Greetings, I have noticed that when I check the users on this Windows XP SP2 machine, I do not see an Administrator account, but only other accounts with varying degrees of privileges. However, when I boot in safe mode, I can see those accounts exist, as well as an Administrator account. My questions are as follows: - How do you log in with the Administrator account during a regular boot? - What is its default password and how do you change it? Thank you. Jean-Pierre dareys@yahoo.com

Re: Prefetch question
by Guest StarryEyed- 3 replies

Re: Prefetch question I've been actually deleting my prefetch folder a few, if not more, times a week. I had a feeling I might be doing something wrong, but it's been running soooo smoothly since I've been doing it and it's a brand-new computer and I was just mainly looking for an easy way for upkeep, and until now I ran into no problems. (Someone was working on my computer through taking control over it from another computer online) and I could see what they were doing and I asked if that was safe and he said yes and that whatever files needed to be there will restore themselves. But now I'm trying to upload my entire cd collection onto windows med…

Disk Management

Hello, I have a Dell 8600 Inspiron running WinXP/SP3. The laptop has a 60Gb internal drive, a DVD drive, and a USB external drive. The 2 disk drives are both single partition. I was checking the drives in disk management and noticed that the 2 disk drives didn't show their drive letters. The DVD drive letter was listed in the disk management window. According to the disk management window, the 2 disk drives are unmounted. But this can't be true because the laptop boots normally and I can see all of the drive letters when I open My Computer or Explorer. Is there some way that I can restore these drive letters in disk management? -- Thanks, Tony Fo…

8/12 Patch Tuesday patches break BlueTooth
by Guest Bill Cohagan- 4 replies

After installing this patch set I'm no longer able to use my BT keyboard to log on to my PGP encrypted disk. PGP puts up a logon screen *before* Windows starts. This worked fine prior to this patch set. Now I have to open the laptop case, login to PGP, close the laptop case (to utilize the external monitor) and then everything's OK. This of course is quite a pain when using the laptop with external monitor and BT mouse and keyboard. Is there a workaround? TIA, Bill

Address Bar missing after SP3 Install
by Guest Conan Kelly- 11 replies

Hello all, I installed SP3 the other day and afterward, I noticed that the address bar is missing from the task bar. Not only was it missing from the taskbar, it was also missing from the list of toolbars so I couldn't even turn it on. I love the address bar on the task bar. I use it every day. And now it looks like MS completely removed it with SP3. It looks like I have the option to add custom toolbars: Right-click Taskbar >> New Toolbar... >> New Toolbar (Choose a folder, or type an Internet address) dialog box. If I knew how to create a toolbar, I would just recreate it. Any pointers? Does anyone know of another address bar too…

Installation Floppies - no drive
by Guest John- 6 replies

My mate needs to use a very old CAD package that he last used on his old PC. His new PC has no floppy drive so I thought I would be able to help him by copying them. I loaded the prog onto my PC without any problem (it is on 3 floppies). I copied the installation discs so that I could put it onto a USB Stick or CD. I made him a CD - but he says that he can see the files - but when he clicks the set-up it stops due to not being able to open a particular file. What are the issues with this?

From Suspend to Hibernate
by Guest Peter- 8 replies

I have XP Home SP3 on a Toshiba laptop. I have a graphics driver problem that happens when I start WMP AFTER resuming from Suspend. The problem does not occur if I resume from Hibernate. I know how to make the laptop hibernate: press the Shift key and press the Suspend button. However, is it possible to configure that Suspend button (maybe through the Registry) so that instead of suspending it hibernates? Thank you JB

Session Timeout
by Guest JohnB- 3 replies

I think it's called "session timeout". It's where I get a login screen if the TS session isn't used for a certain amount of time. How do I control that? I've increased the time in the user's profile. I increased it in RDP properties in TS Configuration. The computers in this company are not joined to the domain, so I can't set it in a GPO. I've set it to 1 hour in the RDP properties. And it still goes back to the login screen after a couple minutes of idle. What am I doing wrong? TIA

Automatically restarting a program that was ended using Task Manag
by Guest john_75915- 1 reply

Is there a way to have a program restart after it is ended in Task Manager? We use Quickbooks, and the Quickbooks updater is running constantly, but some users will end the program through Task Manager. There seems to be no way to hide or block the program from being ended, so I was wondering if it can be set to automatically restart if ended? Due to others programs we use, all users have Administrator rights, and that cannot be changed. I look forward to any suggestions. Thanks.

Two DCs run Windows Server 2003. XP clients cannot resolve a host name of a file server which runs Windows Server 2000. I can PING that Windows 2000 server without any problem. Resolving host names of the DCs are normal. What could have been the cause of the problem that I'm having. It used to work before and I have confirmed the problem is not related to Windows Updates.

When I shut my 'puter down the screen told me I had updates to install. I had automatic download & install set,in security adviser. Each time since it asks do I wanna install. I WANT to see what they are. I have changed the settings to 'download but ask me when to install'. I used to get a screen with a "customize" option, which let me see the files. How do I get that screen back, or, alternatively, see the files waiting to be installed? Thank you. -- Semper Fi
