2008 server can't access net
by Guest Glenn Clark- 1 reply

Hi All I have a 2008 server which I am evaluation before we buy. Its stand alone and when it was built, it used to get its ip via dhcp from a zywall and no problems. we put exchange 2007 on it and then needed to give it a fixed ip address, as soon as we did we could not access the net. When hovering over the network icon in the task bar it says local only. I can access the server from clients and ping from clients, I can't get any internet access and cant even ping the router\zywall. I have checked ipconfig and this all show ok as heard about a route issue which left the default gateway blank but its all fine. The firewall is switched off. I have run…

DC sending lots of random netbios UDP packets?!
by Guest Usenet- 0 replies

I've swapped over a firewall this morning. The new brick has much more/better logging than the previous one. Our internal IP range is 10.x.x.x and I'm seeing loads of netbios tcp/udp traffic being blocked by the firewall that is for all manner of destinations i.e. 192.168.x.x, 172.22.100.x, 100.0.0.254 and so on. We don't use any of those ranges, and the DC is the only machine that is doing this. I've ran lots of virus scans and I believe I've ruled out any sort of trojan/infection etc. and if it were a "nasty" I don't think I'd be seeing so much for the 192.168.x.x ranges. Any suggestions on what on earth may be going on would be welcome. The …

2008 Enterprise to 2008 Datacenter upgrade

I was reading somewhere on the MS Site that if you had Enterprise Edition of 2008 there was a licensing path to upgrade your 2008 Enterprise to 2008 Datacenter Edition so you could go from the 4 Guest HyperV Servers to Unlimited and it would not cost you the full price of the datacenter edition pricing. I have since lost this article and was wondering if anyone has seen this article also or not and if you have get that info to me. Thanks Roger Crawford HTS

URGENT: How to move 2003 Server to new machine?
by Guest jim- 9 replies

I am an employee of a small company that has an HP Proliant ml350 Windows 2003 Standard server that is about 4 years old and has drives about to fail. I have been tasked with moving the server to new hardware, but I am new to server management in general. (They understand this, but are still confident in my ability to get this done without bringing the company to a grinding halt.) As I am not exactly an experienced server admin at this point, I thought it would be wise to ask you guys what would be the easiest and (most importantly) safest way to move my existing Windows 2003 server to completely different hardware without having to rebuild the enti…

Re: Explorer.exe does not load upon startup/login

Re: Explorer.exe does not load upon startup/login My school district has same setup and problems as you. Started happening after we installed NetOps on our labs and removed Altiris Vision 5.0 (curious if you have similar applications running.) We have multiple labs, at multiple school sites on multiple hardware having the same explorer error as what is listed here. Some labs have SP2 and couple have SP3 (but both have same issue, so I don't think it's Service Pack related) Think it may be NetOps on my lab that messed it up, and we also run Deep Freeze on all these PC's to prevent changes by the students. What we've noticed so far is that if you login…

Help with Terminal Server Licensing
by Guest Craig Mann- 3 replies

Does anyone understand Terminal Server Licensing ? Looking on the internet it appears a lot of network administrators out there are having the same issues as me, why is this so complicated? I have purchased 12 Device CALs and have setup a Terminal Server License Server and installed the CALs. I have configured a seperate server as a Terminal Server. However the terminal server currently is in its 120 day grace period. I want the License Server to issue the CALs to the Terminal Server but the Terminal Server keeps prompting that there are no Terminal Server Licensing Servers available, although the License Server can be seen on the network, can ping it etc a…

Unable to access Desktop following Windows Udate
by Guest CWS666- 1 reply

Yesterday I saw the yellow Windows shield in my bottom tolbar which prompted me to download the latest Security updates. I have Windows XP SP3. When the download was finished I was prompted to restart my PC which I did. After the PC finished loading up I was left with a blank desktop and no bottom toolbar (no Start button) and, therefore, unable to access anything. I restarted in safe mode and accessed System Restore and went back, first 1 day and then 2 days without success - still no desktop. I am able to access Windows Task Manager, and, using the File drop down menu was eventually able to acces the internet. I can access my e-mail via webmail. C…

session id detection
by Guest Jim Reisz- 1 reply

I have a windows service that binds to a port on the server and I have several applications that will send messages for the service to process. Is there a way that the service can detect the terminal service session that is making the request without having to pass the session id in the request? I will need to modify the service to work in terminal services, but would like to avoid modifying 5 applications to pass the ts session id to the service. The reason that I need the session id of the caller is so the service may launch a process within their session. TIA

XP Pro SP2 When viewing "Entire Network|Microsoft Windows Network|MSHOME" in My Computer, from either of the two computers on my simple network, I can't see the other computer. From my desktop, only that computer itself shows up when MSHOME is expanded. The laptop does not appear. From the laptop, only the desktop shows up when MSHOME is expanded. In other words, the laptop does not show up as a member of MSHOME on either computer. The desktop shows up as a member on both computers. Both computers are connected by cable to a Belkin router. They can ping each others, and I can transfer files from one to another. (And yes, both are indeed members …

What's the best way to remove terminated employees from AD? I'm talking about doing this on a domain that has never been cleaned up, not just one employee. I exported all the users from AD to a CSV file. And I have, from HR, a list of current employees, in an Excel file. But I am looking for some type of automated method to compare the two. TIA

Windows 2003 DHCP Server
by Guest twillett- 4 replies

Hello all I am hoping you can help me. I have just migrated from Netware DHCP to Windows 2003 DHCP. We are one of the departments in a county that need some access to resources in the Main Downtown Office - Timesheet and Fiscal stuff - but for the most part we host all of our own services. This system has been in place for 2 or 3 years and works good until the migration of DHCP services this last Friday. All of our stuff locally works great and the server gives all of the IP info we need however we cannot load web based apps that connect to to our downtown office anymore. What is wierd is if I go to some of the problem PCs and type in the TCPIP info manually…

Bad Product Key - Windows 2000
by Guest DJH- 7 replies

I am trying to reinstall Windows 2000 on a PC after having to replace the hard drive. I have the CD that came direct from Microsoft many years ago and a Product Key sticker on the envelope. In the setup, after entering the type of keyboard, etc. it asks for the product key. It does not accept the one that I enter. Is there any way to tell from the key if I have the correct envelope and that it is indeed for Windows 2000? What else could be wrong? How can I get a valid key? -- DJH -- DJH

Ok so I finally got my computer fixed. But it has been set back to the factory settings, or something. And now everything on it is huge. Like the windows at the bottom, the programs in the menu, etc. And when I talk on a messenger program, I can't even see my friends lists because everything is so big. Can someone help, and tell me how I can make everything smaller again.

Dealing with two accounts on one machine
by Guest Charlie- 1 reply

This is sort of a generic question. The OS is XP Pro with SP3. We have two user accounts setup. Some features, applications etc. are separate on one account compare to the other. As a simple example each of us has different desk tops and we use different operating systems. But when I decided that my desk top was too cluttered and deleted a bunch of short cuts that were rarely being used, I got a comment from the other account holder that the short cuts had been removed from her desk top. While this is a non problem, it does raise a question. Where can I find a list of those features etc. that are common to all users and which ones are individual…

Hi All, This is a bit off-topic but may be of interest to some people. I have just found a website that looks interesting. It lets companies register their products for beta testing, and testers specify what sort of products that they would like to test. Sort of a beta testing dating service - Membership is free. It look like it is just starting out, but is a promising concept. Betatestnow.com Cheers Mike

ts2003, users hung at black screen
by Guest anthony- 5 replies

i have a clean build 2003 standard server, with TS installed in application mode. Users have been complaining of getting logged or bumped off after 15 min or so. Some of them just have their screen go black and lose the entire desktop. If they close their remote window and re login the get back to the desktop their session is still alive with the applications running. It's like a screen saver kicks in and locks the TS session and the ony resoluton is to close the session window and reconnect every few minutes. They are very frustrated. They are all running windows xp pro through our sonicwall VPN tunnels. Ping statistics through the tunnel to the TS serve…
