Hello, One of our remote offices began complaining of slow network file access of Excel files on their file server/DC which was a Win2k3 sp1 R1 server. Certain Excel files (almost all have links to other Excel files on the same server) would take 60 seconds to 2-4 minutes to open, before prompting to update the data w/in the files. Prior to this it would take 15 seconds or less to open the same files. We were unable to find anything wrong with the server through the event viewer, net/dcdiag, etc. After a great deal of pressure from this office we replaced the server with a newer Win2k3 sp2 R2 server and migrated the data to the new server. When I go into the Windows Firewall to open up the firewall to allow IP addresses to connect to the server I see 4 ports listed under file and print sharing. The 4 ports are TCP 139, TCP 445, UDP 137, and UDP 138. How are these ports different? Would I need make client IP exceptions for all 4 of these ports for file sharing?

when i recieve an e-mail that is a video file, it wont open it.. it tells me to create an association in my folder options control panel...,That all sounds fine but it doesnt tell me how to do it! ive looked everywhere in my folder control panel and cant seem to work out how to do it, could someone PLEASE HELP!

Hi, I always get the message: {Lost Delayed-Write Data} The system was attempting to transfer file data from Buffers to \Device\LanmanRedirector. The write operation failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file (in German) Message ID 50 Last Word C000020C on my Server 2008. Applications crash when this message occurs. All hints are for Server 2003. Is there any helpo for Sever 2008? Thanks Ole

A client of mine needs more memory on his server for an application using a large graphics database. He was told by a Microsoft representative that he could purchase Server 2008 and downgrade to 2003 in order to get the larger memory support (16 GB is desired). All the Microsoft tables that I can find show that Server 2008 Standard can be downgraded to a Server 2003 Standard license, but 2003 Standard supports maximum 4 GB (even 64-bit 2003). He has a Dell Poweredge 2900 with 64 bit Xeon dual core that can handle it with no problem. Does anyone know of a workable solution without going to the Enterprise edition? How can I remove a started setup/installation of Windows Server 2003and restore the old operating system? Hello, Because on my server with Windows Server 2003 I had an error message "ntldr not found" I started it with the setup-CD. Actually I wanted to try to repair it. However, after initiating the setup it took quite long so in between I went to my work place. When I came back it was way down the installation procedure in the GUI part already but finally it couldn't find some files and stopped. For years I have set my computer to go into standby when unused for a period of time (30 minutes) for some reason it has stopped going into standby. The monitor goes to sleep and I can hear the hdd attempting to disconnect but it will not go into a complete standby state. If I click "Start\Turn Off Computer\Standby" it still will not go into standby as it did several weeks ago. I have another computer set up essentially the same way and it continues to function as I have set it up. I am at wits end to figure it out. In a home setting with 5 computers running winxp would there be any need to run a server environment ? Can user rights, priviledges, and dhcp be accomplished with security settings within winxp and a router? Would I be sacrificing anything doing this within a workgroup or would it be better to setup a domain in a server setting?

My computer just started crashing consistently, BSOD with the message "BAD_SPOOL_CALLER" and tech info. Puter is Dell (something I quickly regretted), XP sp2, five user accounts, two with passwords. I am locked out of my personal account off and on, crash unexpectedly when I am in. Ditto admin. I did a system restore from admin, but it did not help. Can anyone shed some light on this. I have been unable to unearth anything useful other than the fact that I am not the only one this has happened to.

Spiralfrog is taking up 120megs of RAM, more than I can afford. So I want to uninstall it. Their web site says use control panel -> add/remove programs. But SpiralFrog does not show up in the add/remove list. Any idea how to get rid of it? Thanks, Chas' Win XP Pro

This morning to promo'd out what I believed to be a NT BDC promoted to PDC, then upgraded to Win2000. The demotion I guess went ok, users can log in, no calls etc . . But when I look at our AD-DNS, the old DC is still listed as a name server. When I look at ADSites and Services, he's still listed in my site, but there is no NTDS listed. If I look at Computer Mangement\Sessions there are a handful of users connected, but no open files. And what's the deal in Sites and Services when links aren't automatically created? I forget. But I have a handful of links that were manually created... So - should I wait for my four sites to replicate for that…

As a System Admin, when I go to a folder with Previous Version in W2k3 Server, I go to the previous version tab, then to the Folder Version I want. Hello, I have an IDE primary drive (c:) and a SATA RAID 1 as programs & data drive. The raid is an intel southbridge raid controller on the motherboard. My RAID contains my d: and e: drives which contain Program Files and all user data. One of the SATA drives of the RAID died. So I purchased a new identical 160 Gig drive and replaced the bad drive. With the intel RAID controller the array is rebuilt in the OS not the BIOS. So I have to boot the machine into WinXP in order to rebuild the array. Ok, so here lies the rub. Scenario: Dell Optiplex 755 Desktop - re-loaded XP Pro, service pack 2 - had to get Dell's help to re-load Drivers, in correct sequence - now, this computer will not connect to the LAN, (3 other computers and server, thru 16 port hub - the other 3 computers work fine - did NOT re-load them, so original config from Dell) - I can ping the server, but not any of the other 3 computers - cannot 'see' the network to find the printers attached to the server - also, even tho the ping to the server indicates fast ping (<1ms), the one program I can access at the server is extremely slow now, takes ~ 30 seconds to retrieve information from server, whereas before, …

there are 2 usb ports on my computer on works one doesn't, when i put in my flash usb mass storage device it says that the thing can work quicker with correct host controller. when i click on the icon it shows the usb and a free root hub, how can i configure this usb port to work please? Hello. I'm having a problem with Windows 2008 TS and Thin Clients. When my thin clients are using rdp to connect to the 2008 TS it works ace and I get the screen where you are asked for username/password. Right after I've typed that in and hit enter the user will log off. I then have to repeate the prosess 2-3 times and then suddenly it logs on to the TS just fine. I can also be "lucky" and it will log on the TS on the first attempt. I have 3 Windows 2008 TS and they all behave like this. EventID only logs that there has been a log on and a log off from my test user, it says nothing about failed attempts. Does anyone have a idea? Will provide mor…

I downloaded a file on my desktop which didn't complete the first time. I tried again later and it did complete alright. Now I'm stuck with a 0 byte file on my desktop which I can't delete, even in safe mode: "this file is being used by another person or program". Any idea? But no use after apply as it still choose "Do not Show hidden files and folders" The user is administrator. Why it prohibit me to choose "Show hidden files and folders"? Hi, We need to connect with windows VPN to an external office but receive error 619: I thought the traffic was blocked by our netscreen firewall, but all outbound traffic is allowed. I opened also several incoming and outgoing ports (GRE, PPTP, L2TP, 1723) but that didn't solved the problem. The vpn connection is working perfect at home so something blocks the traffic. On the clients the windows firewall is desactivated. Can someone help? Thank you. Frederik
