by Guest Patrick D.- 1 reply

Hi, I am looking for a method to restart a remote server as soon as the server is not accessible via port 3389 during a specific amount of time. How can I check right from the remote server: "is my port 3389 still reachable or not?". Or are there different, even more common tasks to get the same effect? Thanks for your input. Patrick

Hello, I am planning on moving to Terminal Service Server 2003. I currently use Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. We have different versions of MS Office for different staff. How can I launch the right version of office for the right person? Do I need to install every copy of MS Office on the Terminal Server or just one of every Edition? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Macintosh file stored on Windows Server 2003
by Guest myBasic- 0 replies

Hi, I have been using Windows Server for storing Macintosh's files for years. Some day the Server 2000 failed, I installed Windows server 2000 on the another machine. and then restored the files. But I found that the InDesign with the linked graphic eps files has been broken, I have to re-link again, pretty annoying. Even I installed the Windows server 2003 with the same ip address, the same Server Name, the same shared paths as previous server, and then isolate that Server machine from the domain network by another network swith, and then restored the files. When I open the InDesign files, it prompt me to re-link the attached eps graphic files, but …

Hello, I just received an e-mail from the Partner's program about a "Call to Action" in respect with troublesome issues with Windows Server 2008 that concerns me as for a new client which is interested in buying a new Windows Server to conduct his business. As stated: "Windows Server 2008 has a mechanism to prevent or discourage legacy versions of software from installing and/or running that you do not want to support on this platform." There will be other issues as these workstations are presently operating on XP Professional, and are running Office 2003 application, and intends to operate a CRM application and Quick Book Accounting. Before considering…

New XP Update yesterday - today won't boot
by Guest nnord- 1 reply

Hi - I can't boot up my XP Home today - it hangs after I click my User icon, and never reads "Loading ..." Yesterday it installed a Windows automatic update when I turned it off in the morning. Anyone had any similar problems? I"ve started up, pressing F8 to get in Safe Mode, and then I've tried "Last known good configuration", but think I tried that after too many restart attempts, because it made no difference. I"ve tried "System Restore Point" from 2 days ago, but that "failed". Next, I will try to remove yesterday's Update Any ideas?

Terminal Services vs. Terminal Access
by Guest Lee Jefferies- 6 replies

I am a little confused by server terminalogy. With Terminal Sservices, you have to have TS CAL's and it provides the ability to run applications on the server. That's good and positive and I understand the reasoning and advantages. The other case is RemoteApps. RAs let you run applications and they appear to be running on the clients workstation. This also requires CALs. The distinction between TS and RA's is less clear. They seem the same. OK but what if the only requirement is access to files on the server. Execution is on the clients workstation, with his own application that accesses files on the server. In the intranet environment that is simp…

Re: Automated System Recovery [X-post to WinXP General] System Restore's Restore Points do NOT back-up any data; cf. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/filesfolders.html When SP3 (and most other updates) is installed, a Restore Point will be created automatically. However, it is not necessarily a wise idea to "undo" the install of SP3 via using that Restore Point. Internet Explorer accessibility
by Guest Bigben7- 2 replies

Hi, I'm having trouble with my internet connection. I run two machines, one laptop which is connecting perfectly, and a desktop which is not. The desktop says that it has an excellent connection (54.0 mbps). I have been through the phone support with linksys (I am able to ping myself, yahoo.com, google.com, with no problems), so they dumped me. However, my explorer says basically that though I have a wireless connection, I do not have an internet connection. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thank you so much for your time, and any ehlp is greatly appreciated. Ben

Recent version of Flash needs SSE capable CPU ?
by Guest dave xnet- 2 replies

There's a lot of reports in the Adobe Flash player forums of crashes. It's occurring on those using older CPU's and a consensus seems to have been derived between the posters that indeed, SSE instructions have been hard coded into the player with no regard in the code as to whether they are supported or not. One thing that is conspicuous is the complete lack of any comment on the subject amongst the various posting by any Adobe rep. while they, in general, do make appearances and have commented freely on some of the other topics. Did Adobe just sneak it in with out making any announcement or updating the Flash minimum requirements ? The whole thing seems …

Cannot start Help and Support
by Guest chili15- 9 replies

When I try to access Help and Support I get the following message:( Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named Help and Support.) I have typed in Run:services.msc, and found Help and Support set on automatic. I have tried a number of reg edits from the Registry XP tweaks site, but nothing seems to help. Would it help if I re-installed Service Pack 2, and if I did would I lose any of my programs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have just fitted the above to my elderly neighbours older computer because he needed a new keyboard and it had a usb connection and he did not have enough usb sockets. I bought a cheap Prostat 4 port usb hub 1.1 version which works well. The only problem is that when booting the computer windows 98SE wont boot up unless I disconnect the 4 port usb hub and then it is fine and I reconnect it and all is well. I was wondering do I need the 2.0 version or what can I do???? looking forward to hearing any suggestions. thanks -- margie
