Quick background: Windows Server 2003 Native-mode AD, XP workstations. We have employees in our environment who do not have admin rights on their local computer and are installing Firefox to their systems by pointing the install path to their Documents and Settings folders. Because of this non-standard install, the path to the Firefox executable is not consistent. I have found a way to block access to an executable using a path restriction in Group Policy, but is there a way to block access to an executable by name regardless of its path? (Note: this GPO would have more applications than just Firefox, but it is the example I'm facing right now.) …

Double installation of XP
by Guest Nolan- 7 replies

During startup, when I hit the key (I can't remember which one it is at the moment) to do a step-by-step startup, my computer goes to the 'select operating system' screen, which shows TWO installations of XP. This evidently happened when I took it to the shop a few years ago for an upgrade from ME. I don't know what the &*^$# they did, but evidently they managed to install both a valid and a non-valid copy. I just recently discovered this, and that shop (surprise) is no longer in business. I can't get any upgrades, because the MS website is detecting a non-valid copy of XP, which I suspect is the one that is not the default, which the machine norma…

I posted a problem I had here that when I started up my comp; the game's CD would start it's setup prog everytime. Very annoying, someone suggested tweakUI and that worked for awhile but I finally fixed it by ripping it out of control panel and have ME find it again on the next start up.

Basically I need some way for my application to be able to detect if explorer launched it in response to it being in the startup folder and the user logging in. I would like to be able to distinguish between explorer launching my application at startup, and the user clicking the link in the startup folder (this precludes using a simple command- line parameter). I'd like something similar to keyAELaunchedAsLogInItem kAEOpenApplication AppleEvent (http://developer.apple.com/ documentation/Carbon/Reference/Apple_Event_Manager/Reference/ reference.html#//apple_ref/doc/c_ref/keyAELaunchedAsLogInItem). The only thing I saw close to this was the WM_WTSSESSION_CHANG…

In "How to configure an authoritative time server in Windows Server 2003" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042), found the following, but could not find where and how to configure it: All available synchronization mechanisms The "all available synchronization mechanisms" option is the most valuable synchronization method for users on a network. This method enables synchronization with the domain hierarchy and may also provide an alternative time source if the domain hierarchy becomes unavailable, depending on the configuration. If the client cannot synchronize time with the domain hierarchy, the time source automatically falls back to the time source that…

Ghosting Issue
by Guest Parvardigar- 8 replies

This is very uncomplicated. I have at work here only Dell Optiplex GX1's running Windows 2000. On all the machine I ghosted from former harddrive 9GB to new harddrive 80GB. No problems. On this one machine I have ghosted in the usual fashion the 9GB to the 80GB drive. And I did this on two new fresh WD harddrives ending up with (after installing the newly Ghosted drive) this Blue Screen Stop 000000007B and so on ending with Inaccessible_Boot_Device. I've ran the Ghost several times and ending with the blue screen message. In Bios I alter the device to auto, and it is found. Bios fine. I can upon reboot launch safe, safe with networking, LKG, and so on.…

How to configure ftp.exe to use passive mode (PASV)?
by Guest curiousgeorge408@hotmail.com- 6 replies

How can I configure ftp.exe to use passive mode (PASV)? By ftp.exe, I mean \windows\system32\ftp.exe, which I execute by Start > Run > cmd > ftp. (I call this MS ftp.) On a whim, I have set Passive FTP in Internet Explorer (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced). Concomitantly, "use PASV" is set to "yes" in the Registry under HKEY_USERS\S-1-...\Software\Microsoft \FTP. All to no avail. (Should it also be set somewhere else?)

BSOD Error Screen DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
by Guest rusty7010- 1 reply

I am using Windows XP Home Edition, Dell 4600, IE7. This screen comes up just when I am "surfing" on traffic exchanges. It states that it is a Windows error and must shut down before damage is done. The following is listed on the screen: (The message about the DRIVER IRQL, as listed above in the subject line) In the instructions it says to "Disable BIOS Memory Options". I couldn't copy the wording on the blue screen, so I can't state exactly what it said, but it also had this: (0x0000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) This blue screen has come up about five times in the last three weeks. It just seems to happen when I am doing the surfing. I s…

Password Management Products
by Guest Thomas M.- 2 replies

This isn't really an XP question, but I didn't know where else to pose this question. If anyone knows of a better group to which this question could be posted, please let me know. We are looking a password management product to help us keep track of passwords on everything from Excel sheets to admin accounts. Another unit in my division uses a product called Password Manager XP, which they seem to like. I have no opinion regarding that product because I have never used it. I would be interested in hearing about competing products. I would also be interested in the pros and cons of specific products (including Password Manager XP) that people have u…

User Always get Temporary Profile
by Guest Brian- 3 replies

Hi All, User has windows XP pro SP2. Problem is that every time he logs in, he gets an error message that a temporary profile has been created. In trying to find a solution for this problem, we have renamed all the existing profile folders (except administrator) on his system and also deleted any references to unknown profiles in the User Profiles window. I checked his registry settings and there are no references to his account left. So as far as I can tell, it should create a new profile in his name, yet every time it creates a temporary profile. Although the user is on a network and logs on to our domain at startup, his profile is supposed to be l…

Windows XP Sp3 Stop Errors
by Guest fusa- 11 replies
I am getting stop errors in Windows Xp Sp3. This started happening in September, but is getting more common now. Most of the errors have been 7e, but some 8e errors. I originally tried doing a rollback to a week before the stop errors started, but that didn't help. I then tried reinstalling XP but the same problems exist. I ran memtest86 for about 9 hours with 9 passes and 0 errors. The smart diagnostics on all hard drives report the drives as being good. Chkdsk /f also did not return any errors. The stop errors that the most recent install of XP has generated are located at http://rapidshare.com/files/157140856/mini.rar.html

RE: Outlook Express Archived E-mail folders Peter, Sorry to use this reply method to get a question across, but I am unable to figure out how to post a question. Do you happen to know how I am able to get rid of the pop-up box in Outlook Express that asks "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes"? Then I must select "Ok" or "Cancel." If I cancel the pop-up occurs everytime I close Outlook Express; if I "Ok" it, I lose current emails in my in box! -- Julie "Peter VandeBurgt" wrote: > I cannot open my archived e-mail stored as *.dbx files through the Files menu > and 'Compact' …
