After a few of our pc's loaded sp3 the next day the users are booting up to a blank desktop, no menu, icons, nothing. We removed sp3 through the recovery mode and ran the repair. Still nothing. The only solution we found was to remove the HD, backup folders and reformat. Anyone else having this issue?

Hi - can anyone tell me why my Windows Task Manager has lost its top blue bar, its File/Options/View/Help drop downs below and its Apps/Processes/Perf/Networking tabs ? All I get is a box with open applications in it and the only way I can close it is to right click on the green icon in the task bar to get <close>. Thanks in advance, chrissyd.

I've got a problem with server security... and I know little on the subject and could use some advice. Recently my server (Windows 2003, running IIS6) has been the victim of massive login attacks... by that I mean they event viewer shows a massive number of failed login attempts, often thousands at a time! Here is an example of one of those events: Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: Admin Domain: AXXXXXX Logon Type: 8 Logon Process: IIS Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Workstation Name: BXXXXXX Caller User Name: BXXXXXX$ Caller Domain: AXXXXXX Caller Logon ID: (0x0,0x3E7) Caller Process ID:…

Receiving spam related to websites I just visited. Is theresomething in this PC, or what happened?

Receiving spam related to websites I just visited. Is theresomething in this PC, or what happened? Running IE6 on this Win98. I keep my cookies to 12 related only to websites I'm registered with. I keep 'temporary' stripped and empty every session. Yet, I just visited Microsoft website for IE problems and now am receiving a flurry of 'official looking' notices from MS that say click here to upgrade your Internet Explorer. Obviously these were spam and the purpose was to inject malware into my system, because they came from RIPE network. They violated MS copyright, so I forwarded to abuse at RIPE and at MS. Maybe a spambot crawled through the Usenet cha…

'Net access limited
by Guest PaulPar- 6 replies

I can't access the Web, iTunes and a Telnet talker I visit. However, Skype and Outlook mail seem just fine. This happened suddenly last night. I tried system restore and both times I got a message saying system restore did not work. I've rebooted my computer, wireless router and cable box numerous times. My wireless desktop icons report that connectivity and speed are just fine. Why can I access some apps and not others? Could it be that my XP is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled? If so, is this a difficult process?

Every now and then we have a problem on our Win2k3 SP2 server, and from that moment on any new TS/RDP connection does not work... After the login screen the desktop does not load, we just have the background color of the screen and a mouse, but no icons, no taskbar, no launches of startup programs. W end up rebooting from a local account.

Problem with Windows Explorer Context Menu
by Guest joshwert- 1 reply
When I right-click a file in the Windows Explorer the context menu no longer displays the top-most portion of the menu. The items missing are things like: Open, Edit, Preview and Print. The other strange thing is that the Open With command is displayed in bold (denoting it's the default) when I click on any file. All file associations/actions are correctly configured in Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Has anyone else experienced this type of behavior, and if so what steps can be taken to correct the situation to display the missing commands once again? I hope to hear of a solution. Thanks. jw

Win 2003 Server SP2 Enterprise Edition - RDP problems

I have a HP ML110 G5 with the above operating system installed. The problem I am experiencing is that I can't RDP onto the server unless I am logged onto the server locally as the Administrator. Once I do this I can RDP from any location. I have spoken to my colleagues at work who have never experienced such a problem before. Do I need to edit the properties of a service(s)? I would be grateful for anyadvice. Cheers

Partition size for Server 2008 Core install
by Guest Richard Perry- 3 replies
I am curious what size partition others are using for the system drive? I have seen some indications that 4GB should be enough, however I have also seen statements that it needs to be large enough to hold the pagefile. However, I have noticed that Server 2008 puts the pagefile on the 2nd partition if available, so is this really a consideration? I have a 32GB server, and I am preparing a Core + Hyper-V. Since I am not using shared storage at this time, I want to maximize the amount of disk space available to the VMs without compromising the host OS. -- Richard Perry

undeletable folder solution
by Guest perky- 0 replies

I found this answer to the problem of deleting undeletable folders (http://www.jrtwine.com/Products/DelFXPFiles/index.htm). This software is available in four versions, one of which is free. The free version does have the delete functionality enabled, so this should be able to meet your needs. Be aware, the download link is a little difficult to find on the Delete FXP Files website. You will find the download link a bit above the license types table near the bottom of the page. I have tried all the well known software for deleting undeletable folders and this is the first one i have found that worked. i have been trying to delete an empty folder for about …

Printer driver confusion
by Guest carl43m- 2 replies

I have an older desktop with windows XP Home operating system. Recently I took an old laser printer(9 years old) and hooked it directly to the pc. The mfg. web site (Xerox) shows that it did not have a driver for xp or vista for this printer. However, after I hooked up the printer to the pc , it works. I went to control panel/system/hardware/device manager to see what driver might be available to run the printer. However, there was no category for imaging devices which would seem to indicate no driver was loaded for the printer. Does anyone know why this printer is working for me as it doesn't look like there is any driver on the pc to make the printe…

by Guest Dreamchaser- 7 replies

Dear MVPs and all, Hey people. I have good news following my previous post. My exlorer.exe still crashes frequently with unknown fault module. I've tried the sfc /scannow and searched for viruses/malware/spyware using updated Symantec Corporate Edition 10.5, Spybot, as well as cleaning up the Trojan.Vundo using tools from Symantec. BUT, I can now replicate the crash. It happens whenever I exit My Computer, Control Panel, or any folders then I'll have an error screen it restarts explorer.exe. Pored over solutions on the net and set "Launch folder windows in a separate process" (problem solved except when closing Temporary Internet Files accessed from IE, …

||||| My experience with SP3 on 2 machines |||||
by Guest J Tinsby- 13 replies

If you read my first posting that SP3 failed to install because I got an " Access Denied" message you'll see that there is a KB 949377 article that addresses this issue. I thought I'd be brave ( or stupid ) and run the registry mod that is suggested in that KB article. This only took a few minutes and I went about installing SP3 on my XP Pro Machine. While that was chugging away I thought I'd put it on my wife's machine that she doesn't use at all that runs XP Home. That install went off without a hitch.................but it made the machine so slow that it was unuseable, so yet another SP3 un-install for me! Now to my machine, it installed OK but I fo…

Software Assurance License Questions
by Guest Daddy- 8 replies

Since my employer has a Software Assurance agreement with Microsoft, I am entitled to purchase Microsoft Office for home use at a very advantageous price. I can only purchase the same version of Office covered by my employer's Software Assurance agreement, which is Office Enterprise. This version of Office contains way more software than I need, but I know that I can install only the components that I wish to use. The advantageous price comes with two 'gotchas' that are actually quite reasonable: I'm only allowed to use this software for so long as my employer maintains its Software Assurance agreement and for so long as I continue to be employed here. …

Bit Defender ate something??
by Guest Teflon- 12 replies

98SE on an older Thinkpad. Thought it was acting sluggish, ran the CA AV plus Spybot S&D, but nothing, so I decided to run Bit Defender's online scan. Somewhere during the scan, a message flashed on the screen, just got a glimpse of it, said it had found and eliminated a problem, did not get the name of what it had found or eliminated. Did not get any report or find any log of the scan's results. It was my error for not checking to see what the scan would do when it found something. Should have changed it to stop and ask questions, versus the default fix on the fly. Launched an app that has been running for years and got a message that the Unicows wra…

Is it possible to host an application on a Terminal Server and have different users from different companies connect to the application and yet maintain security? I would like to have different profiles / desktops for the different companies that log on. Also, I would not want users to have access to the files and folders. Can all this be done inside TS? Thanks
