Intermittent Web Connectivity- Timeouts
by Guest Skitter- 9 replies

I have an issue on my AMD 64 machine running Windows XP Professional 64-bit. I can connect to the internet using Yahoo, Myspace, and MSN messangers, but whenever I bring up a web browser (IE or Firefox, does the same on both) it sometimes connects to a web page, and other times times out a massive amount of times before finally connecting and bringing up the page. I can be reading my email on my MSN account and it might load the page, let me sign in, and read a few emails before it starts timing out again. I have tried connecting to a web page with no other programs running, or with multiple, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I thought at firs…

Will XP Backup copy files Uncompressed to another disk?
by Guest Mel_3- 19 replies
I'm need to move 60 GB of files from one disk to another. The copy command bombs when file names are to long and it takes forever to find them all and correct the problem. I had a 3rd party backup program but it was on the hard disk that died and the vendor won't respond so I can reinstall it on a new disk to recover the data. The files are not compressed... just 60GB's of files. Never used the XP backup program... will it let you do a backup (copy, move, recover, etc) without compressing the files? What alternatives may exist for moving uncompressed files without having to worry about file name length? Thanks for any help.

Disable Shutdown Event tracker 2003 Server R2
by Guest Dave K.- 3 replies

OK, I know how to disable the shutdown tracker in a standard version of Server 2003. But in 2003 R2, when I run gpedit.msc, there is not System container under Local Computer > Policy -> Administrative Templates -> All that shows up under Administrative Templates is Windows Components. Is shutdown tracker disabled in a different location, or is it even possible in 2003 R2?

no WSUS in windows 2008 server roles
by Guest Verus- 2 replies

Hello, I am playing around with windows server 2008 for operational installation soon. Now, i have a book which says that WSUS is standard in 2008 and you should install it in "add roles wizard". The problem is that i don't have Windows Server Update Services in that wizard. I saw a printscreen on internet where wsus and hyper-v are in the "add roles wizard". So my question is why is it not in our list. kind regards, Verus.

Dual boot appears to be hosed?
by Guest Don- 3 replies

Hey gang, I have been running Vista Ultimate 64 bit, dual booting with XP Pro 32 bit, since about mid March. I dual boot, and used Easy BCD Creator, to create my dual boot menu upon bootup, which has worked very well. I went out of town on Tuesday, and when I got home yesterday evening, noticed that it booted directly into Vista 64, without giving me the option to boot into XP. I went into Easy BCD Creator, and added the XP boot to it, then when I tried to boot, I got the option, however when I chose XP, it simply flashes quickly and then reboots. It simply will not boot into XP Pro any longer - no problems booting into Vista Ultimate 64 bit. …

Why is my floppy drive running?
by Guest watha- 10 replies
I just did a fresh reinstall of XP on a new hard drive, and am enjoying the usual improved performance. But there's one odd quirk-- the floppy drive, which has no disk in it, keeps lighting up and buzzing as if it were searching for data. It does this every few minutes. I suppose it's haremless, but it's annoying. Besides, I'm curious about why it would do this. Anybody ever see this before? And how can I make it stop? Thanks.

Need a stable platform to work with, so which OS is better ?
by Guest Mark Natto- 4 replies

I am in middle of making another PC for my daily tasks, the base hardware would be : Asus P5N-E SLI 8GB DDR2-800 (if going XP32 then 3GB) GF-7300GT Xeon E3110 Dual 3GHz-1333bus (the spare mobo I have wont take any of the quad 45nm CPU and I am not keen on the Q6600/6700) Most if not all of my software are 32bits, but I would like to take advantage of the 64bit OS for memory when running VM, plus I do find XP64 seems to work a whole lot faster than XP32 on another test machine I have. I am no great fan of Vista, since day 1 I have been battling with it for clients, but with SP1 it restored a bit of faith so may be I should give it a chance and use Vista…

how do I get a CD out of this drive?
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 22 replies

apologies ahead of time, but this group has ALWAYS helped, so I'm back. I just spent two fruitless hours searching the net for info on this and zip! Here is the problem: I've got a CD Drive, Creative 24Xmx Model CR-585- B that has a CD in it that I cannot extricate. Yes, I tried the drive in a known good system....with power applied and bus attached. Either the drive is dead, or the eject switch is dead, but either way I've got a CD in there I can't get at. I removed four screws on the bottom and removed the metal plate. Then, removed two screws holding in the PC. But only one end lifted up and I'm reluctant to start forcing things when there's a 'p…

Hi, I have a 2003 Enterprise server SP2 32bit running here. On some computers, that aren't part of the domain, and not always, when I go to start \ Run, and type \\server to open the shares I should get prompted for a password (or a list of shares if I already authenticated) but I get a message: \\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have access permissions. An unexpected network error occured. If I go to the server through a shortcut to \\server , or through Network Places, I can access it just fine. This happens on XP Pro SP2 & SP3 & Vista Busines…

hi there, i have vista home premium. Recently i installed magic video converter. after i installed the program, i went to "start" -> "all programs, " i see this "programs" folder. I clicked on that, all it shows is the list of softwares/programs installed in this computer (same list of stuff from "all programs" ) Is there anyway to get rid of this? i like the video program but hate "programs" folder inside "all programs" i think it has something to do with pcoffin.sys (not exact spelling) or something. -- Message posted via http://www.windowskb.com

Keep cleaning XP or Clean install
by Guest Ed H- 7 replies

Hey: I've had this copy of XP going for about 4 years now. It runs sluggish as compared to the beginning and sometimes seems busy. I'm extremely careful regarding spyware, viruses etc. Run many checks to keep my machine clean. I can't seem to do enough however to get things up to speed again. Is there a point we need to format/re-install? Is slowing down just an acceptable consequence of an aging and growing system? Thank you, Ed -- Ed H Dell Dimension 4550, WinXP Home SP2 60 Gig. In normal mode, or safe mode, when any user apttempts tp log on they get the "loading your settings" message then are immediately logged off. Chkdsk /f (from Ultimate Boot Disk) fixed some errors, but did not improve the situation. Using Fixmbr (from Windows CD) indicates a non-standard configuration and warns of deleting partitions - so I didn't try it. Any ideas?

An install crashed in the middle and now my PC is messed up. When I attempt to run certain programs like deleting Internet history I get "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, Please contact your administrator. When I attempted to play an mp3 file, it downloaded a Codex before playing. Media Player 11 won't play an original DVD movie anymore, but it will play an non copy-protected movie. Adjusting Default Installation Drive
by Guest RAZ- 2 replies

We are using a Windows 2003 Enterprise server for our exchange 2003 server. When I try to install a new program on the server it will automatically choose to go to the E drive instead of the C drive. This normally wouldn't be so bad except that I can't install SP2 because it cannot find the INF file on the E drive and you are not given the choice to choose what drive you want to install it on. Where do you adjust the setting to select the default drive for installing programs on this type of server?
