I am running WindowsXP sp3. About a week ago I started getting this error In a 16 bit msdos system window. "The NTVDM CPU has encounterred a illegal instruction cs.0559:ffdeop:ffif 0906 Choose: Close or ignore to close the application" I installed Registry Smart and ran a scan and got everything fixed. What can I do to fix this error?

How to tell if a partition is primary?
by Guest Sal- 12 replies

I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 that has 16MB partition that's used for diagnostic testing. The disk management snap-in only tells me that it's 16MB FAT, Healthy (EISA configuration). I need to know if this counts as one of my four primary partitions. How can I tell? When I right click on it, it just brings up a help menu for the Disk Management Console.

File Shares/User names and passwords being remembered
by Guest theinvisibleGhost- 4 replies

We've got a Win2k3 machine set up as a simple File Server (Active Directory not installed/activated) Connecting in using Windows XP machines initially the machines request user names and passwords which is good. However they then seem to store these usernames and passwords. Is there some way of stopping them doing this? It gives two problems, one is that it's a security issue, and two it means the same XP machine can't be used to log into the file shares with different user accounts. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers, Chris.

Remove a cached credential

I have an odd problem. I recently had to change my user's naming convensions from just their name to first initials + last name. I did this pretty easily by just changing the users logon names in AD so all their SIDs stayed the same and I also updated their profile and home directory names (%USERNAME%) to reflect the new logon name. I have a problem with some laptop users where they occasionally make the mistake of using their old username when they are not on the network. When they are on the network it is fine because they get denied logon because of the non-existing name on the domain but when they are at home, the laptop allows them to logon with…

by Guest Baron- 4 replies

I'm running XP Pro and recently noticed that I can no longer open System Properties from control panel. I also tried Win-key + Break-key and that also does not open System Properties. However, I am able to get to Computer Management either from control panel or from My Computer|Manage. I tried starting in safe mode as a test but was still not able to open System Properties. Also, I am the administrator. Any ideas?

How Does User Connect?
by Guest dave m- 3 replies

Basic question but cannot find answer. Terminal server setup on W2003 SP2 server, licensing correctly applied. User logs on to a LOCAL PC at their location, then uses "Remote Destop Connection" to logon to Terminal Server. How is this SUPPOSED to work, or put another way, when the user sits down in front of a PC, how do they directly logon to the terminal server? We want most users to do away with individual workstations and use a "dumb" terminal to log on to terminal servers. dave Admin (and one lacking knowledge, obviously)

I'm running XP pro. At times I have problems getting the DVD drive to update its directory. I try all sorts of refreshing but ending up booting my machine. This is kind of over kill. What simplier way is there to force an update? I do not have any sort of auto play turned on. (DVDs were burned as data DVDs with Nero.) Don <www.donwiss.com> (e-mail link at home page bottom).

Problem: Adobe Photoshop elements by default creates folders for imported pictures based upon the date the picture is taken. After each import I need to set the folder option to view thumbnails... Goal: I don't want to do this system wide as my preference is to see file details for most other folders. thanks -tom

LLTD Info
by Guest Bobby Johnson- 0 replies
I have discovered several things about this LLTD situation. 1. the v5 version of the file will only install on SP2. 2. if you have LLTD installed before you apply SP3 the LLTD files are updated to the SP3 versions. 3. there is a v6 installer for XP SP3, but you have to request it from Microsoft. 4. if you need LLTD on XP x64 or Server 2k3 x64, get the files off a Vista x64 system and install them as noted in the link for installing the v5 package on SP2. Spread the word. I don't understand why Microsoft is making it so difficult for people to get LLTD on XP, 32-bit & 64-bit, and server 2003.

Hi, I have been tasked with installing Synctoy at about 100 laptops throughout our organization. I have found some command line commands to do the sync but does anyone know if there is a way to do the pairings? Thanks. Kevin

Here is the scenario: 2003 active directory with IT OU and Servers built-in OU. IT people in IT OU have a login script in a group policy at User Configuration/Windows Settings/Scripts/Logon folder. When IT people log into a PC the login script executes. However I don't want the login script execute when IT people log into the servers listed inside the Server OU. How do I make it work? I already selected Block Inheritance when I right click Servers OU but it did not prevent the login script from running at login. Thanks.

Experts, I am running Windows 2003 Server SP2, and on this machine, I cannot get the Workstation service to start automatically (thoug the service is set to start automatically). Once the machine boots up, I can log in and start the service from the services panel manually without any problems. I checked the dependencies, and this service is not dependent on any other service. Understandably, other services that are dependent on Workstation do not start up either. The Error log lists the following two entries: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7009 Date: 8/6/2008 Time: 10:12:12 AM User: N/A C…
