where does all the memory go
by Guest chasgl- 2 replies

When I start my computer it has about 300 megs in use. But after a while Task Manager says it has 800 to 900 megs in use, which is more that I have so it uses virtual memory and slows down. But if I look at the processes tab it only adds up to about 120 megs. I do have show processes from all users selected. What could be using the rest of the memory? How can I chase it down? Thanks, Chas

Information on Dynamic Port Used by Terminal Services
by Guest Will- 5 replies
According to Microsoft documentation, Terminal Server Licensing servers use RPC port 135 and a dynamic port over 1024. Regarding the dynamic port, can someone tell me: 1) Is there a registry option we can use to place the dynamic port on a specific fixed TCP port? If yes, what are the details of that? 2) Is anyone here technical enough with the terminal server licensing protocol that they can tell me the UUID of the requested service associated with the dynamic port? -- Will

Lost Part of Control Panel - Pls Help
by Guest Molly- 23 replies
First I noticed that the single click on the mouse was no longer an option, maybe 3 days ago. When I went to the control panel, the mouse Icon was gone, actually the entire part of the interface that let me get to the windows display, to set the wallpaper and change the pixels on the monitor was gone as well. I've taken the registry back two days but would like to know if this is a probable solution before taking the registry back further. I've just lost beaucoup time because of another problem. Thank-you, Molly

Hard Drive Missing in My Computer
by Guest ctc- 5 replies

1 of my existing 4 hard drives (not OS drive, data only) no longer appears in My Computer or Disk Management. The missing drive is a WD500gb SATA on an installed SATA card. Both are recognized by the Bios upon bootup. Both are recognized in the device manager and their properties state that they are working properly. The drive is found by Add Remove Hardware and is listed as working properly. And the Data Lifeguard Tools finds the drive and states that it is working properly. No other programs can see the drive. I have uninstalled the drive from Device Manager and upon rebooting it is automatically displayed there and it's properties state that it is w…

For no obvious reason, my Windows 98 computer wil not start up.. It freezes on the first black screen with white writing stating that the "Dos key is installed" and "Mode select code page function is completed". The only way I can get rid of this is to press the restart button after which I can choose to start in Safe Mode. I have then tried to disable all applications one at a time to find the problem to no avail. Any one any ideas please.

Suddenly lost most of my drive letters - no SD!
by Guest teddysnips@hotmail.com- 3 replies

I don't often use the media slots in my XP machine, so I don't know when the problem occurred, but I've just tried to view some photos on my SD (miniSD?) card and suddenly I can't see it (the card, I mean). So I went to Explore My Computer and noticed that, whereas I used to have drives D, E, F, G, H and I (or something) suddenly there are just two (C: and D: - the CD) If I put a pen drive into the USB port I get an E:. But putting a card into the SD port and nothing. nada. Anyone any ideas? Thanks Edward

Hibernation/Turn off hard drives Options?
by Guest rfIPS- 5 replies

I have a user with a desktop that runs super warm. He doesn't like to close everything and shut down his computer so he's entering it into hibernation. The problem is that it takes several attempts to wake it up out of hibernation; it will come out eventually but only after several attempts. After doing some research, I found it could be related to graphics drivers which I am in the process of troubleshooting. In the meantime, can someone tell me what the option for "turning off hard drives" would do? Has anyone had problems with this? Also, if applicable: this is a remote user that VPNs in to the network. I suspect he probably just puts it in hibernati…

Hello. System: Win XP Media Centre Edition – Service Pack 3 Somehow, I picked up a variant of VirtuMonde; Symantec Anti-virus, Spybot Search & Destroy etc did not locate it; I discovered it by chance using Windows Sysinternals Process Explorer. I ran Vundo Fix 7.0.0.6 and it removed three traces of VirtuMonde, I then rebooted and ran Vundo Fix 7.0.0.6 again, this time it found nothing. However, I noticed that Automatic Update was disabled. Irrespective of how many so-called “fixes” I try, I cannot enable it via Services. When I set it to automatic and click start, I receive the following message: Could not start the Automatic Updates service on…

Automatic Printing to a File Name in Windows
by Guest JimR- 1 reply
I have read the article "kbprint KB119256", in Microsoft KnowledgeBase, which explains how to setup a path and file name for a printer that basically has a FILE port type. I am wondering if it is possible to have the filename change dynamically. For example: append some sequence counter. The idea being that in a multiple-user network many users printing to the same printer would not overlay each others files. The prefix would be consistent: "\\server\path\fileXXXX.txt" where XXXX will be the result of some sequence counter generated by Windows automatically.

I have an odd problem. I recently updated my SAV from 10.0.0.359 to 10.1.6.6000 and I had no problems with the server install except for when I started updating my clients to the most recent version. My environment is XP Pro SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2. I updated my clients by logging into the SSC then did a client remote install, my problem lies in only some of the client that are running Server 2003 or XP with these problems 1. "Client remote Installation. The Server (Primary AV Server Name) is not hosting any compatible symantec antivirus (SAV) 64 bit installers for the 64 bit client (host name)" I got around this by logging onto the host in quest…
