I've got an old DOS zipped file that is not corrupt but I cannot extract it. I've tried WinRAR, IZarc, Universal Extractor and Windows unzip.exe, all say unknown method. I also booted into Dr-DOS but I get the same message. Also, I've tried zip repair tools. How can I extract it?

How come IPConfig /flushdns doesn't work??....
by Guest Penang- 14 replies

Hi, all ! I've tested IPConfig /flushdns command and found out that it doesn't work. But before I go on, here are some background details... My connection to the net is via ADSL, dynamic link. In theory, the use of the following 3 commands:- ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew supposed to flush out the "old" dns, and obtain a "new" one. So I made a batch file (ip.bat) with the following command:- ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /all and run 2 tests, about 20 minutes apart. The result is, the dns and the IPs staye…

Help! N/working XP64 & Vista 32bit 1 2
by Guest me@tarquin.demon.co.uk- 27 replies

I'm quite an experienced computer user but have never before tried to set up a home network and I have completely failed to succeed with it. Equipment is D/top with XP64, new Samsung Laptop with Vista32 and a fairly new Buffalo wireless/wired router. Both machines connect OK to the internet - D/top via cable to router and laptop by wireless. What I've failed to achieve is to set up a wired network between the 2 machines so we can exchange files and share the use of the printer connected to the D/top machine. However, I have been able to ping each machine from the other. The difficulty seems to be setting up the N/work on the D/top and seeing the laptop. …

Blue Screen problems
by Guest husky86- 9 replies

I’m running XP Pro (SP 3) on a AMD-based laptop (2 GB RAM). XP is crashing at least once a day. However, instead of providing me with the standard “blue screen of death,” the blue screen does appear, but just briefly (a couple of seconds). Thereafter, the computer restarts. When it gets to the desktop it displays an error message saying that “Windows cannot find ‘http://oca.microsoft.com/resredir.aspx………’” The actual error message/link is quite long. As you know, oca.microsoft.com is Microsoft’s error messaging control center. Under such circumstances, what is the best way that I can begin to determine what is actually responsible for causing these r…

One of my college daughter's laptops is having problems. It's an Inspiron 8600 running XPHome SP2. The best way to describe the problem is to copy the letter she sent to me this afternoon. I've googled, etc, and my hunch is that it may not be malware, but a driver problem. Here's what she wrote: ******************************************* ...I have been unable to use my laptop since Sunday night when I got back to school. I opened it up like usual that night and a blue screen appeared with a bunch of text on it. I'm sure you've seen it before. I told mom that I would try System Restore hoping that I could at least get it working good enough to use…

How can I open old Wordperfect files?
by Guest Engineer- 12 replies
Hi, All. New to group so please excuse if OT, i.e. not just XP related. My wife's PC has a number of Wordperfect files on it that she used to run on an old installation of Corel7 (which did run under XP.) The system crashed and I had to reload XP (all application programs lost.) I'd rather not reload a 10 year old Wordperfect CD (designed for Win95) on XP, so is there a public domain WP software out there that will open native Wordperfect files? I've not tried Openoffice on Wordperfect files yet (but it does open MS Word files.) From now on, not needing exotic formatting, she'll store stuff as .RTF so that anything can open it - but we have to get at it firs…

Can Not Resize Tiny OSK
by Guest Larry- 2 replies
After adjusting multiple Display Properties settings on Win XP SP3 to accommodate a new monitor, I found OSK to have shrunk vertically; width seems OK. The title bar and menu bar appear to be normal in height but the entire rest of the keyboard is crammed into a space about the height of the title bar. Somewhere there's GOT to be something that tells the system how high to make it. Any suggestions?

Won't boot into windows
by Guest operaflute- 17 replies

I had posted this as a hard drive question, but I'm having the same problem after replacing my hard drive so... Basically, if I shut down, I can't boot back up. Before Windows starts to load, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor and that's it. I can restore from some of my backup images (not all - some will give me the same black screen upon reboot.) but then I can't shut down or I'm back to square one (sorta defeats the purpose of a laptop, doesn't it?) Can not boot to safe mode. Fixmbr and fixboot don't help. Scanned for viruses, spyware, malware etc. etc. - nothing. Could this be a bios problem? I'm running out of ideas, and I SO SO SO …

Changed from Domain to Workgroup. Password stopped working!
by Guest IWantXPBack- 7 replies

The company that I worked for went out of business. They let me keep my laptop. I decided to get this laptop onto my home network, so I changed the information for the computer. I changed the name of the computer. I removed the old Domain information and I added the computer to my local Workgroup. When I reboot the computer, my old username was in the Username field of the login screen, without the preceeding domain information. But, no password is working now. Not my old password, not my new password. Does anyone know what username/password the system is looking for now? It must be looking for some specific set, but I've tried everything I can thin…

Hi There Have a laptop which I just reformatted the C drive with and have done a fresh clean install of Windows XP Home Edition. This was after several attempts at using the recovery console, and when that failed I did a full reformat in NTFS a clean install. When I chose not to activate right now but later, screen then came up with User Name for myself and asking for a password, of which I had not allocated. That being said I attempted to enter every password that I have had on the laptop and continuously getting the following: Logon Message: The system cannot log you on due to the following error: The specified domain either does not exist or coul…

I am trying to change the Network key on my linksys router. The existing number is 26 characters long and random, apparently in hex. I want something short and easy to remember. I went to http://192.168.1.1 and entered usernames and passwords until I blundered into one that seemed to work. It resulted in closing of the password dialog box and took me to the browser screen. The browser message is: 401 Unauthorized Authorization required So I'm stuck. McGyver

Hi, I have a 32bit 2008 Enterprise TS running and I'm having issues with Easy print. The clients are XP SP3 with .NET 3.5, or Vista SP1 with .NET 3.5. When a user logs on, he sees the redirected printers without me having to install any driver. Great... Now when someone prints something, the text comes out garbled. (pictures are ok) I uploaded a few examples I scanned to my personal webpage @ http://users.telenet.be/obsession2001/easyprint.zip (348kb) * Mail1.jpg = Printout Outlook 2007. Headers appear fine. Text is jibberish except a few small words at the end (part of my signature - not entire signature is ok) * Excel.pdf = printout Excel 2003. …
