Is this a virus? Taskbar has gone!
by Guest T- 1 reply

My computer running XP Professional suffered a sudden slow down and the Taskbar shrank is size. After a reboot the Taskbar disappeared. It is not hidden as the start menu does not respond to the Windows Flag key. I reformatted the drive only to have the same problem reoccur a day later. I reloaded using the original media which I have successfully used before. I did however use fresh copies of Avast Anti Virus and Zonealarm downloaded with another PC and scanned with Avast which indicated that they are both clean. The only explanation I can think of is a boot sector virus. Is this possible after the disc was reformatted and is their a way I can know for s…

Possible program transfer?
by Guest Sirius- 11 replies

Hello, My older friend is at it again, he thinks I'm some sort of a wiz who can do pretty much anything with his pcs. He wants me to transfer MS Word 2003 from his 5 year old pc to his new Vista pc without the installation disk! It came preinstalled. And he can't get used to the 2007 version. I'd hate to disappoint him so I said I'll find out what can be done. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe it's possible. Of course we would take it off the old one to prevent copy violation. I would not even know how to get started. I guess I need to take the folder from Prog Files, then there must be some in other ones like App data, common files, s…

I have infected files that are essential to the WindowsXP pro operating system. These are: C:\Windows\Config\csrss.exe C:\Windows\Config\supdate.exe Therefore I ask: can I delete these two infected files, and then just copy the original clean ones from the original WindowsXP installation disks? Server 2003 image creation
by Guest Chris- 7 replies
Hi, I have used Acronis Image Server before to create a complete image of a server, which I then recreated a RAID and put the image back on top successfully. Does anyone else out there know of any other more cost-effective solutions as Acronis can be a little pricey. Any ideas welcome, but all I need to do is create an image of a HP ProLiant DLxxx server as a RAID 1, recreate the RAID and then put the image back on top of the new RAID set. Also, if this image is transferrable to another different hardware (like Acronis Universal Restore option) then please again let me know. Thanks Chris

DSL update and another issue 1 2
by Guest SSJ04 Mewtwo- 39 replies

To refresh those who helped me fix my protocol problem..., When we tried installing the DSL modem, there were no protocols to bind the adaptor to. Through several attempts Mike told me that I had a bunch of missing .inf files. Now, all .inf files from those .cab files that also were copied from the ME disk are on this machine and the Windstream guy is coming to try again tomorrow sometime between 1-5 pm. I'm now having a start-up issue that's driving me insane. The boot process gets all the way up just before the desktop, then a BSOD appears saying that the computer needs to be re-started. So, I do and the start-up menu comes and I'm able to boot to safe mo…

I find this a very odd quirk of XP SP3 which on a brand new OS installation as well as old sp2 and the upgrade to sp3 via WU, I started noticing certain files were locked and I couldnt delete them etc... Long story short I found out that the programs that I had used to access those files even though were terminated correctly and without any errors were indeed still showing running under the taskmanager running allowng and consuming resources. Theres many programs that do this like IE or winrara or Flashfxp or any other program I can think about. Im not exactly what you would call a newb and this was certainly not my first OS install in fact I can see m…
