Hi I have a server (Windows 2003) where a scriot is running as the System Account. The script uses some date information. This date information is retrieved as: mm/dd/yyyy (Looks like the US date format) I would like to have it as: dd/mm/yyyy (The UK date format) How can I change the regional options on the System Account ? I tried changing the administrators regional options, but that did not help because the script is running as System Account

by Guest Simone Meggiato- 5 replies

Every night I was used to perform a scripted backup of the virtual machines (VMware server 1.x) that are on a Windows 2003 host server. The VMs are suspended just before to invoke ntbackup and restored at the end. Since a couple of weeks i get errors like this in the ntbackup log: 'WARNING: Portions of "\Virtual Machines\EureSolver\EureSolver-flat.vmdk" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete.' It is always related to the large virtual disk .vmdk files. the invoked ntbackup command line is: 'start /wait ntbackup backup "D:\Virtual Machines" /J "%NAME%" /T "%NAMETAPE%" /N "%NAMETAPE%" /D "%NAME%" /V:no /L:f /M normal /HC:on /SNA…

Windows XP SP2 Picked up the remote control, turned on the TV, computer shut down totally dumping a screen full of spreadsheets. Gotta love that. Previously, the monitor has just flickered and reset itself. It is sporadic. I haven't been able to discern a specific item that I'm doing when it happens. I had thought that it might be the scanner so removed it. Obviously it wasn't. I've asked the IT folk at work, electrician, my computer guru - all are lost. HALP! (an upgraded "help"). Suggestions, thoughts, updated Ouija boards.... Mist --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. Virus Database (VPS): 080728-0, 07/28/2008 Tested on…

I have a Gateway FX7024 (came with Vista), that won't boot anymore (says cannot find boot device). Thinking it may the hard drive, I removed it and replaced with a new WD Caviar 320GB. I am trying to install XP on it, but I get BSOD. After some web searches, I figured I need the drivers for SATA and I tried to slip-stream them with nLite and with Driver Packs without success (still BSOD). I tried setting the BIOS to legacy IDE instead of SATA , still gets the same BSOD. THe computer seems to work as an Ubuntu Linux live CD works fine, and recognizes the new drive. When I launch the partitioning software in Ubuntu (GParted) the new drive appears as unallocat…

Printer access security
by Guest Januar- 0 replies

Hi, I have a HQ where the Terminal service server is deployed. The server is Windows Server 2003 R2 and the clients are Windows XP. We do not deploy VPN between sites. For some reasons a domain is not created so it is a non-DC server. There is a user at a remote office (let's call it UserA) who has a directly connected local printer. Another remote office has a user called UserB. When UserA connects to the Terminal Service, he can print to the local printer. We setup this by connecting the local resources and adding a printer driver on the server. Now, UserB wants to use UserA's printer, but he cannot see the printer. Both users are normal users. If…

Allowing a iser to run a program !!!
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

I am operating a laptop that also has another users account on it. The other user is a fiddler and plays with things that he shouldn't play with on computers, so I have given him a limited account. The problem is I need him to be able to run and operate Autocad. This program needs to be able to write to the Registry. but because this users acount is limited it will not write to the registry, therefore causing an error and not allowing autocad to run correctly. Is there a way to allow this program to write to the registry so the user can run the program correctly, without him becoming an administrator on the laptop. or is there a program somewhere tha…

Hi, I'm using robocopy.exe to move old files to another server, I have started copying files that are create from 31/12/2000 and before. Now all the files do get moved across, but it will also create the entire orginal folder structure, so I get folders with nothing in them because no file meet that age, so why does it create the fodlers? eg robocopy.exe G:\marketing F:\Archive\Marketing\2000 /E /copyall /move /minage:20001231

backing up questions?

Hi, I have a Windows Server with another Terminal Services Server. I have setup a backup on the server to happen every night with a DAT tape. As you might have noticed from earlier posts this is now getting quite full. I have also noticed that there isn't a backup facility on the TS so the main server is backing up C and D on that machine which basically includes all the shared folders that have been setup but nothing is backing up the Database folder on TS or any of the users files under C:\Documents and Settings\User. Each user is using pop3 email through outlook via their TS login so I suppose their emails aren't being backed up either. Any suggesti…

Server shuts down randomly
by Guest smallbizguy- 2 replies

Our Windows 2003 server randomly shuts down. It happens approx 3 to 4 times per week usually at night. No helpful messages in the event viewer. One thing that I have found strange is that when you select Restart on the server the server shuts down and when you select Shut Down the server restarts. I have already replaced the memory but that did not help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hard disc access problem

I lost my C drive and had to install a new one. I have a large amount of data on an existing E drive that windows does not see and allow me access. It is recognised in the BIOS as a slave, and a Western Digital diagnostic program says it is there and working perfectly. However, in the diagnostic program it calls the C drive a physical and logical drive but the E drive only as a physical drive. Am I doing something wrong? Is ther a way to access this drive? Thanks for any help

Windows 2008 & Win XP Client blues - Network name cannot be found
by Guest Ziga Jakhel- 6 replies

Hi, everyone! I've just installed Windows 2008 Enterprise in a Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine. The server is set up as a PDC with it's own domain forrest, and has a DNS server. DNS resolves Ok, but I have 2 major issues. 1) If connecting to/from WinXP / Windows 2003 computer, the network share is visible, but I cannot copy files. The operation fails after a few seconds, with the "Network name cannot be found" (or "is not available") error. This works OK, if the client is Vista, so I presume it's a SMB 2.0 issue. Any hints on how to force the w2k8 box to use SMB 1.0? 2) From the w2k8 box, I cannot browse to http://www.microsoft.com, http://ww…

Windws Update scheduled install through GP

I have clients setup, through group policy, to download updates from my WSUS server and install them on Thursday at 6pm. My question is, do these computers need to remain connected to the network in order to install the updates? Because I have users who want to take their laptops home with them on Thursday night, but I am unsure as to whether the update will install if the computers are not on the network at 6pm.

Netlogon Share-access denied
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

One of our remote administrators uses a folder under the Netlogon (\\domaincontroller\netlogon\gposhare) for GPO batch files/logon scripts. Since I put in the new domain controllers, he gets 'access denied' when trying to edit the GPO batch files or post new ones. I am the domain admin, and it works fine. He is in the AD security group that has full control of this share. Any help is appreciated. steve
