by Guest michael- 10 replies

From the "computer management" utility I can see there are 2 users from the administrators group (the default administrator account and "mike"). The only accounts that appear on the log-in screen are "mike" and "guest". If I want to delete "mike" I need to do it from the "administrator" account but I can't access it. How do I make this account visible? OS: winxp pro service pack 2

Application caching
by Guest Toni Van Remortel- 20 replies

Hi all, We have set up Server 2008 with Terminal Server for about 10 users. All those users use the same application (a single exe from a network share). The drawback is that when we update the application (in-house development), we need to ask all TS users to log out before they can use the new version. Somehow, the exe is cached by the TS server as long as someone has it open, and TS does not check if the exe on the network share is updated. Is there a way to disable this behavior? When we update the application, a simple close and reopen should open the new version, not the old cached version. Thanks a lot. -- Regards, Toni Van Remortel

Spy Sweeper vs. Spybot Search and Destroy
by Guest Allen- 15 replies

I have both of the programs mentioned in the subject and have doubts that there may be conflicts between the two. I have two questions: first, are my doubts well founded; second, if so, which should I choose to continue. I am posting in this ng although I'm trying to use Vista, as a result of my XP machine suffering a hardware meltdown; the equivalent Vista ng is populated with a huge number of crackpots, weirdos and plain old lunatics; it makes it hard to ask a question there and get an answer that can be trusted. On the other hand, this ng is full of very helpful people. Thanks for any help. Allen

Win 2003 DC moving to new office - sanity check
by Guest Barkley Bees- 1 reply

We have two main Offices - A and B. Office A is where our main DC is located (Windows 2003 Domain native mode, single forest, single site - GC, DHCP, WINS, DNS). Site B also has a DC (GC, WINS, DNS - No DHCP). The two sites are connected by IPSec VPN tunnel (30MB bandwidth). Office B is moving to a new location that will be getting a new address range so I will need to move the DC. It seems simple enough but I was hoping to get a sanity check on my planned process below: Day 1 - Run DCPromo on Office B DC to demote it to a member server. - Remove from Domain. - Rename (to follow naming convention for new office). - Shutdown server. - Allow ~16 hours f…

by Guest Lindsey- 10 replies

Is there a download available for Windows XP that will allow me to see files that were created using Vista? I have some people using XP and others using Vista and when a file from Vista is sent to the person using XP, rthey are unable to open it. I know that you can save the vista file in compatibility mode, but I was trying to eliminate that step. Any help would be great!

Problem with intermittant internet connection.
by Guest Frank Martin- 3 replies

I have WinXP pro and a Netcomm1300nb4 modem which all worked very well in the past. For the past two weeks I have been having trouble because my internet connection works intermittently; that is it works properly or not at all. I have tried many solutions, such as renewing the ISP connection, checking plugs & connections and disconnecting latest software, and doing virus sweeps. I have disconnected Zone alarm and gone back to the Windows firewall. The only clue I have discovered is in the "Windows Task Manager" in the "networking" chart window, and this shows the moving green line at 0% when my internet connection is working, but 3…

I'm using Window XP Pro version. When I bootup, my WinFax automatically boots up. I don't want it to automatically boot up and instead prefer to manually activate it when needed, which is perhaps no more than once a month. How, do I remove WinFax from the default startup list?

Question on event log errors
by Guest yepiknowiam- 12 replies

Not sure if someone can help me out with this, but wanted to ask. We have 2 servers (HP ML350 G3) running server 2003 with sp2. About 5 days apart, both started to fail and have issues at the same time, identical errors in the event log. The main system errors are event id 333 (An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in or write out or flush one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry) and event id 773 Server Agents. There also will be some warning at the same time in the application log related to prefdisk, which is weird because we don't track counters. From what I can t…

Remember that some of these companies have contracts with Microsoft, and that means that they are paying them anyway, even if they don't install Vista... Just imagine how much they have vista, if they are paying them, but still prefer XP.. Windows XP, SP2 I am experiencing difficulty with Internet access which has got very slow over the last few days. Windows security alert reports Firewall is off; Windows Firewall in Control panel says 'Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not runing'; so Windows will not allow me to enable Windows Firewall even through Control Panel. I also can't access Internet Options at all through Control panel; it was saying 'system administrator has denied access'; I am the system administrator presumably. Internet Options icon has now disappeared altogether from Control panel. Network Connections folder in Control panel i…

Power Options ... On the move
by Guest Mr. D- 0 replies

I have several XP machines on a network (domain). Some of these machines are routinely used via Remote Desktop. I have been struggling with a couple of machines in particular where the Power Options (PO) keeps reverting back to Laptop. I have gone so far as to completely disable any power saving possibilities (including deleting the Laptop PO) and putting these machines in Presentation mode. Every time I change the settings ... these machines will work as expected for days or weeks at a time, then they revert to the Laptop PO. This may be an error in observation; however, there may be a pattern of "updates" and the reverting to the "Laptop" setting.…

directories to ignore during backup?
by Guest George Neuner- 5 replies

Hi all, Has anyone put together a list of what data various popular programs keep in the subdirectories of "Documents and Settings\<user>, "Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data", and "Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings" Some of those files are crucial to back up, others just inconvenient to lose. But some of those directories appear to be crammed full of cached internet files, old installation binaries, temporary program data, etc. that nobody needs. It seems like there is a whole lot of stuff in there that is useless to be backing up all the time. George -- for email reply remove "/" from address

I know this is NOT the best place to ask this, but I figure somebody must know: Does Visual Basic even have the concept of a string? I'm in Excel's table of contents "Microsoft Excel Visual Basic Reference" and I don't see string, or methods I see in online forums such as Split, RightString, LeftString etc... And is there a newsgroup for VBA questions? Thanks!
