I integrated the Service Pack 3 to a Windows XP with SP2, but problems occured when I was logging, sometimes when I started the PC and typed the password on the Welcome screen, it says that "A problem has prevented the activating...error code xxxxx", I forgot the details. So I must reboot the computer then F8 to boot the Safe Mode, then reboot the computer again to normal mode, that message disappears. What is this??? And there's another problem. I attempt to install the Cumulative Security Update for IE7(KB950759), it says successfully installed in the automatic updates, but when I reboot the machine, it prompts this again, I download the KB950759 and tri…

Multiple installations of XP Pro

I have done about 9+ installations of XP pro over the years. I am prone to radical solutions to otherwise simple problems. In any case, the last few times I had to activate over the phone with some nice people in India. Is there a limit to how many times I can do this? I have my hologram key sticker. Thanks Doonie -- ~ every 100 years, all new people ~

by Guest CiscoCaratti- 1 reply

We change several client devices (upgrades after hardware failures). My windows server 2003 issued new tokens for the "new" devices but it does not issue tokens for OLD devices that attemps to open a TS remoote session... because now all CALs are allocated, partially by "old" and "new" devices. How can I retire old devices from the licence database? or Let old known devices have a temporary CAL? Thx

Partitions on Dell Computer 1 2
by Guest Earl Partridge- 31 replies

Trying to help a friend with her Dell Dimension 3000 machine. It would not boot. I installed that hard drive into another machine as a Slave and it was recognized. XP's Disk Management showed the drive to be partitioned (or at least split) into 3 sections. The first simply shows 39 Meg Healthy, the second shows (C:) 70 GB (System) Healthy. I don't recall exactly what the third section showed but it did (and does) show 4.17 GB. I did delete that third section. Now with that HD back in the original machine, it will boot after being prompted to press F1 - Primary Drive 1 not found. I tried several things with that 3rd section, but nothing eliminates that prom…

Deleting Printers
by Guest Derek Da Silva- 1 reply

Hello Everyone, I've used a script to map a network printer from an old print server called Server1 (ie. \\server1\printer) onto the XP workstation. I've recently created a new print server (Server2) and mapped the network printer (ie. \\server2\printer) onto the same XP workstation. When I attempt to remove the old print driver from Server1 using a script the command fails because Server1 is no longer active on the network. Is there a way to force the network printer connection to be deleted? I've tried the following commands: rundll32 printui.dll PrintUIEntry /dn /n\\server1\printer removeprinterconnection in a VBS script with the force delete o…

Indexing network drives with Windows Vista 64 Home Premium
by Guest Vista64User- 5 replies

What version of Windows Vista allow you to do an indexed search on data on networked drives ? I am running Windows Vista 64 Home Premium on a Quad Core machine, and when I attempt to add a networked drive to the list of indexed locations, it doesn't let me. In the HELP, Troubleshooting Problems with Searching, it says: TOPIC I can't add a network location to the index. Only files and folders located on your computer can be added to the index. This means that network locations will be searched more slowly than files on your computer. In other words, it doesn't index the network drives...it has to search in real time when you make the request. Do …

I do a secondary backup each night to a USB Maxtor drive. These drives get switched out each day, using a different drive for each day of the week. This nightly backup job is scheduled to run at 2 AM each morning. Many times I'll come to work and find the job didn't run due to the follwing dialog box. Replace Data The requested media is not blank. It was created by another application. Do you want to continue? If I select Yes, the job starts. Is there a soft switch that can be added to the command line that automatically answers Yes if the dialog pops up? Thanks

I have HP local printer working fine on WIN98se, while the same printer on WXP won’t print although system detects it. lost downloaded archive

I received a Word archive through my hotmail account. I opened it without saving it to my hard disk. During the six hours that I was working on the document I did save it several times but never as 'save as'. When I finished I save the document again and closed it. Now I can't find it anymore. I opened the archive again from my hotmail to see where it was saving it to which is 'temporary files' but there is no register of the document that I have worked on. I have done a search on the whole hard disk for the name of the file that was sent to me but that didn't find anything either. Does anybody know if and how I can find the document again so I don't have …

Win32k.sys blue screen
by Guest piccolo- 0 replies

I recently installed a Windows 32-bit virtual machine on my Windows 64-bit OS machine. I have been getting some blue screen crashes (lots of blue screen and words that Windows has shut down to recover from a serious error) since then and I would like to know if it is the Windows 64-bit real machine or the Windows 32-bit virtual machine that has crashed. Since I have to physically re-boot, I assume it is the real machine. The technical information on the crash screen is as follows: win32k.sys STOP:0X00000050(0XFFFFFA802B611000, 0X0000000000000000,OXFFFFF97FFF,7F664,0X0000000000000000) WIN32K.SYS ADDRESS FFFFF9FFF17F664 BASE FFFFF97FFF000000 Datestamp 47e0…

Shutdown hanging on PML
by Guest Clang- 5 replies
When I shut down something named PML seems to hang for 3-5 minutes. The only indication of what is hanging when I close down is that "PML" appears in the blue title bar of a transparent window that remains on the screen until the computer shuts down. The window appears as a large dialog box in the upper left corner, the title bar and border lines of the box appear but you can see the desktop behind the box. I am assuming it is a driver or something that is trying to close. If anyone knows what is causing this or how to fix it I would appreciate the help.

This file came from another computer.......
by Guest Smirnoff- 4 replies

When looking at "Properties" of some installation files, at the bottom (under Attributes) there is additional information: Security: This file came from another computer and may be blocked to protect this computer. There is also an "unblock" button. For the life of me, I don't remember seeing this until recently. The installation program seems to work OK without clicking the "Unblock" button. However, I am wondering which program/feature is generating this info. Logic says that it is Windows firewall (which I have recently reverted back to from Comodo) but no warning dialogue appears when trying to run the program. Also, have recently installed SP…
