Windows XP Pro, SP2 up-dated IE7, ZoneAlarm Antivirus Have somewhat of a problem and hope someone can shed light on what might be the possible cause of this problem. When I first built my machine and installed XP, I made another account to use as admin and my everyday account. I've used this account to install all of the programs I have on my machine and never had problems before. I've tried to avoid problems by checking newsgroups and other resources to see if any of the Updates from Microsoft causes problems. I am running Win XP Pro SP2 and don;t see a need to update to SP3 just yet. I therefore want to stop WU telling me that SP3 is ready to download. Any suggestions how to do this? (For some updates, it has been possible to de-select them in the updates utility, but I can't see a way of doing this with SP3.) Many thanks in anticipation! Adam

I am running XP Pro SP2 with all subsequent updates installed. I'm wondering what happens to these updates when I install SP3.... does it remove them all because they are no longer needed? Or does it see that they're there and just install other stuff that it contains? Or what? Thanks in anticipation! Adam

I keep getting "found new hardware" and I have not added any. How do I find out what the hardware is? The normal wizard cannot find any drivers to install, nor does it tell me what hardware was found. -- Yours, Ken Mc

I am trying to repair a friend's computer. She has XP SP1. I have an SP2 disk that came with another computer. Can I use that disk to repair and update her computer? The problem she is having is that Internet Explorer opens then closes right away, so I cannot get on-line to manage the updates she needs.

My machine running XP Pro SP3 is set to go on standby S3 after about 15 minutes. Usually I can wake it up with no trouble, but lately it seems upon that wake up call I have lost my internet connection. For years this machine was fine configured like I mentioned and it never failed to maintaint the connection. What's gone wrong now? Thank you all, Joe

A WinXPSP2 PC got infected by the "AntiVirus XP 2008" malware thing and it was removed, apparently effectively. And it appears that none of the other clients on the LAN got infected by this one. That's the good news. The bad news is that when the user logs off, her personal wallpaper remains on screen even after logoff is completed and the Ctl-Alt-Del popup appears to solicit the next login. I feel sure this is controlled by a policy or registry setting but I've no idea how to return it to the default. Hi ! I used TweakUI to auto signon after boot up. The reason is that I want it to load the programs so that I don't have to wait when I user the PC. However, it would leave the computer sign-on. I would like it to go into the switch user interface panel. I found on the internet there is a XP su command but I don't see it on my computer. Any idea how I can achieve what i want ? I'm getting a error message on my XP clients: "The system cannot log you on now because the domain "example" is not available." However, my laptop is joined to the domain and directly connected to the same switch the server is connected to. I can login locally and ping the server and unc map to it, but if I restart the machine it still won't log in. I've tried several clients. The Windows Vista clients I have works fine. On the XP client I can ping the server, but the server can't the client. The Server is Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP2. The Vista client can ping and be pinged without problems. Hi Currently, my servers are having some issues with w32time. My servers are not syncing with the time source (a server 2003) and event id 50 and 36 are logged. We set them to sync in a 12 hr interval. Can anyone advise on the possible causes to this problem? Could it be the time source or the interval? I just bought a 22" wide screen Acer LCD monitor because I wanted one when they dropped below $200.00. Acer recommends setting the video card for 1680 by 1050 which I did. My Samsung 19" LCD is set for 1280 by 1024. Maybe I'm not experienced enough but I really don't see where the 22" has any advantage except in displaying graphs from the Active Trader Pro by Fidelity and on Outlook Everything is smaller but spread out, so for Outlook Express I can see the entire contents of the folders, and read all the titles, date and size. On IE the print is much smaller even when I set it to largest. My nVidia PCI card has the option to rotate what's displayed but…

I have a computer running XP Pro that has problems installing programs. Seems that the admin rights are no longer there, not even under the admin account. I have created a new admin account, but it has no rights either. I see that there alot of DCOM errors showing up in the event log, but can not find anything out about them. If I do try to install a new program, or even try to do Windows Updates, they all fail. They only thing that installed latelt was IE7. I am trying to open a machine embroidery file that is .blf . I want it to open with a program named Edit 'N Stitch. I have 4 programs from this company on my computer and for some reason, the only one that the computer will allow me to put on the list is Personalize N' Stitch and in the recommended programs is it simply referred to as embroidery application. Hi, I am facing a problem with the OE. I took a back-up of outlook express mails, before formating my PC. After every thing is done, when I tried to import those files which are in DBX format, only few files got import. Our internal mails, which are on our firm name did not get imported. Rest like the mails i sent and the one which I received from out siders theough with the import. So can you please help in importing rest of my internal files. Maybe omeone can help me, but i am experiencing a weird problem. When i am in the windows explorer, the right panel pauzes about 3-4sec before showing the files. I've also noted that my taskbar sometimes hangs. For me all this seems to point to problems to explorer.exe . Weird tough is when using Total Commander it's extremely fast. So it's not my hard drive. I've also ran several different anti-spam,spy etc programs. but they didn't detect something. I've disabled my av to ensure this wasn't playing up, but it didn't help. I had encrypted a folder under a particular user account. Now I am unable to login to that user account probably due to incorrect password. This means that I cannot access that encrypted folder at all. 1. Is there any way I can un-encrypt it now? 2. I have another userid with administrative privileges. Can something be done with this? There are a number of folders on my Win XP Pro system drive called FOUND.000, FOUND.001 etc. SOme are empty and some contain a file called FILE000x.CHK. What are they? Do I need them? Can I delete them? Thanks! Adam
