Hi all Am only able to access defragmentation feature from computer management in administrative tools. Appreciate if anyone can advise me if a shortcut can be created from there. Hi, My XP C:\Windows directory has 4 huge archives named E, O, S, and Y, without any extensions. Each of them is 1,6 Gb big. I tried to move them to another drive, but the system doesn't allow. What are they for? Can I safely delete them? How to do it? Thanks, SantistaS

Just downloaded the sp3 pack with my windows xp pro and now when I log on I try to use my help and support nothing happens I have lost that function somehow.Is there any way to get this back? If I do a restore will that remove Sp 3 which is what I would like to do.

I recently purchased a computer from Dell with 4GB of ram and vista home premium 32-bit. I've complained numerous times in attempt to acquire a 64-bit version. Today, one of the people at Dell emailed me a link to Microsoft's order media website. I was under the impression that using a 32-bit OEM key for 64-bit media violates the EULA or something. However, I have read that this actually works. Dell doesn't seem to be budging with this issue. Can I legally use my OEM key for a 64-bit edition of windows or do I need to start buying computers from HP?

I mapped a Home Folder using a network drive for a user profile using server 2003 R2. The mapped drive shows up ok in My Computer when the user logs in. How do I allow the Home folder to open automatically when the user logs in?

I have been searching in XP x64 for a way of writing files to a CDRW so that they can be overwritten, but without success. The Send To command seems to do a permanent write. Can you suggest where I should look?

Hi Chkdks runs on startup on my son's PC. I have searched this forum and cannot find anything relevant to this problem. I have scanned with NIS2007 and TrendMicro Housecall (online scan) and found no problems. What other reasons might chkdsk run that I could investigate? EricG

The 2003 server R2 machine has been sitting at the "applying personal settings" message for over an hour. Services are being provided so the machine isn't completely dead, but I can't do anything at the terminal. As far as I can tell there are two known problems that cause this: 1. A problem with the APC PowerChute software (doesn't apply in this case) from a couple years back 2. DNS configuration that points to another nameserver. This also is not the case as the machine is configured to point to itself and only itself for DNS services, and the forward zones are configured correctly. I'm fairly confident the Maxtor external HDD has been used previously on the W2003 server - but not 100%. Device manager knows it's there but Explorer does not see it. The file system is NTFS (I put it on another PC - XP pro). -- Regards Tom

Is there a way to get RDP to work the same in Vista as it did in XP? After putting in the server name or IP address I then get a box with the last user's name and password prompt and, a line below that titled "Use another Account" (the window is titled "Windows Security"). Then... when I put in the username/password I see the usual "Log on to Windows" screen. In the username box is the IP address followed by a slash and the username. And, it fails the logon every time. Hello, I am using an RDP ActiveX (Server: XP, Client: XP). Recently I got an 'OnDisconnect' event with error code #2824. Hi, I am encountering a strange FTP problem. Everything was fine when I last used FTP several months ago, but this week when I tried, I always get a message something "Error reading response from server - Port failed" (WS_FTP Pro) or "Failed to establish data socket" (CuteFTP Pro0, but both probrams report a connection is made. I set a Restore point before the install. Everything seemed okay with the install and I ran clean ups on Windows, Applications and the Registry. I have done all three in the past many times with no problems. I also saved the registry entry backup to my desktop before the final deletion of the registry changes. Hello: First, the batery indicator light and the two adjacent lights (one for power, the other, the processor) were flashing on and off. Then, my computer cut off while I was using it. The screen didn't go black; rather, I heard a whistle noise of sorts, whereupon a blue screen came up (a screen that looked something like the screen you see when you start Windows in safe mode, but not exactly that screen). I enabled boot logging using F8 at boot time. I am done with the logging, but I notice that the ntbtlog.txt file is still being written to. I checked boot.ini but there is no /bootlog switch. How do I disable boot logging, or is it normal for this ntbtlog.txt file to always be there? Thanks. ju.c

We are looking at upgrading our TS environment from 2003 x32-bit to 2008 x64-bit. The question I have is; how should I install the printers that our TS users need to use? In our current 2K3 environment, our users can simply search AD for the printer they want to print to. I understand our current scenario is possible since the print server is also 2K3. None of our users use locally attached printers therefore printer redirection is out of the question. Do I need to setup each printer locally on the 2008 x64-bit server or is there a method of installing the 2008 drivers on our current print server and have our users continue adding their printers thru AD?…

Got an older Brother laser printer attached to the USB port running XP Pro SP2. When we first boot up, printer works great. But during the course of a day, with the PC going into and out of Hibernate mode due to disuse, soon we can no longer print. Documents sit in the print queue showing Error status. Can't even print a test page. So ... ShutDown-Restart and all is well again. What must we change to make this printer findable when coming out of Hibernate mode??

When attempting to run Defrag, error message " Disk Check is scheduled to run, please run disk check". I have run Disk Check, but still receive message. Disk check not listed in scheduled tasks. Any assistance appreciated. thank you
