how to run an executable file when Windows won't start
by Guest courtney nhc- 9 replies

Hello there. I have a corrupt registry and am trying to follow the instructions in this knowledgebase article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B307545 I would prefer to run the Guided Help (now partly because one of the files I'm supposed to repair in the manual instructions cannot be copied and I don't know what to do), but I don't know how to run a program when Windows won't start, and there are no instructions in the KB article. Which is strange, because it's right there in the title: "...prevents Windows from starting" so they should probably have instructions for how to run an exe file when you can't start Windows. Any…

OT Maybe. Intel S5000XVN Motherboard
by Guest Bob AZ- 12 replies

I have almost made a final decision to use an Intel S5000XVN Motherboard for a computer that I will use for Digital Photography. I will download the images from my DSLR, edit the images and then print them on an Epson 4800 Printer. I also need to make a decision about which processors. Is there any forum where Intel S5000XVN boards are discussed? Is anyone here using one for digital photography? I have looked at the Intel site and Emailed them but there replies are not helpful. Does the board really need an extended ATX case. Thanks for any assistance. Bob AZ

Yes, if you go to the Appearances tab and select Icons from the drop down, you cant set the font size (and the font itself) there. .... and registry cleaners are frowned upon around here :-)

How do I correct spelling in Company Name?
by Guest Robert A. Macy- 13 replies

Dyslexia strikes again! Soemwhere during installation of MS Office 2000 on my Win98SE, I misspelled my company name by inverting two letters. Went unoticed for eons. Now, after noticing this error and upon creating a file, I have to manually go to the new .xls, .doc, and ?? file, click on 'Properties' and correct the spelling. Sometimes forget. I don't want to reinstall anything, because everything is set up just the way I want it [except for spelling]. Is there some simple way to change the spelling that appears under 'company name'? Can't change file association in XP
by Guest cyndiwise notsowise- 10 replies

I'm using XP SP3 and I tried to change the file association for some .php files. Currently, these files are associated with Dreamweaver because I installed a trial of DW. I have decided not to buy DW, and the trial has expired so now I need to change the file associations for .php files to my current HTML editor, which is notepad++. In explorer, I right-clicked on one of the .php files and selected Open With>Choose Program...>Browse>Program Files>Notepad++>ansi>notepad++.exe. However, when I clicked OK, then on the Open With dialog screen, Notepad++ is still not an option. I don't understand what I am doing wrong. Thanks, Cyndi

WinXP Pro SP3 Hi. I have to frequently change my folder default from Details to Thumbnails and back. I use the Views button, but it has become my default view, so I additionally have to click Folder Options button > View tab > Apply to all folders > Yes > OK. Is there a shorter method with less clicks, such as a batch file maybe? Thanks, Melina

csrss.exe High I/O in combination with Terminal service
by Guest Vincent- 1 reply
Hi, Currently I’m running into some issues which occur on each and every windows 2003 server that I’m managing: When someone logs in on a server the csrss.exe process starts to use up a lot of disk I/O. It seems to have a minimum of 10 MB/s with a maximum of 80 MB/s although the average seems to be around 30 MB/s. The high I/O continues until the user logs off. The high I/O also stops completely when (and this is especially weird) the Terminal service client screen is minimized, but high disk activity will resume as soon as the screen is restored. I am aware of knowledge base article 934330, and even though the article in question states the fix…

help: ts gateway keeps rejecting user credential
by Guest shimh- 9 replies
- 1.1k views
I am setting up a terminal service gateway in Windows 2008 domain in our lab. I followed the step-by-step tutorial. I had this problem: the ts gateway keeps rejecting user credential (The logon attempt failed). I enter the credential in this format: domain_name\username, and password. Occasionally the ts gateway works, usually after the server is restart . With unknown reason, it does not work sometime later. Any idea on the cause and diagnostic steps? Thanks a lot.

Remote Time Update

We have two notebook computers in the field that are not connected to the internet or network. The users have limited accounts. Is there a way to update the time zone (or clock time) as a limited user without giving them the administrator password? Or even a batch file I could create and write to a disk or flash drive to have them boot and/or use? These computers contain patient information, so all wireless and lan setting were disabled so the sites could not modify certain settings. Thanks for any help or ideas for life science inclined.

File server search
by Guest John- 1 reply

I am not sure where to post this question but I suspect I will get a few... different suggestions. We have an AD domain with 2003R2 servers, and many files stored on server file shares. We would like to use search to look for words inside documents (mostly MS Word, som MS Excel). Most of the clients are XP pro. The search from the clients works sporadically. When we say to search the contents all of the files in a folder and sub-folders sometimes it finds it and sometimes not even though you know it is there. Is there a tool or a better way to do this where the files are? TIA

Loss of Focus Problem
by Guest Norm Dresner- 5 replies

Computer is a Dell 9100 Inspiron Laptop with WinXP SP3 and all later automatic updates. Randomly while typing, the open window loses focus. We can't correlate it with anything on the keyboard or mouse. Further, I can't figure out where the focus is! All global keys (e.g. Windows key, Ctrl-Alt-Del) still work as normal. If we tap the right mouse button, the focus point is restored to the point where we were typing, though no mouse icon or cursor is visible on the screen. I think as a first step, I'd like to find out where the focus has gone to. It's not any open window and it's not the desktop because these can be tested by typing keys that would h…
