I have old KB articles which tell you how to add ShellEx registry keys in order to view thumbnails as images instead of as icons in Windows Explorer for formats other than the ususal jpgs and tifs. It worked well on my old Windows 2000, where I added thumbnail views for psd's and pdf's and etc. I hesitate using this technique on my present system (XP Pro), because it DOES show images for the formats mentioned above, but nevertheless does NOT have the added ShellEX file in the registry entries for those formats, whereas they DID appear in my old 2KPRO....The old articles are not meant for XP, except for one which dealt with getting image thumbnails "after …

Issues after infection cleanup...
by Guest Steven Sinclair- 4 replies

Well, I was working on a buddy's computer, cleaned up a whole lot of trojans and viruses and worms (oh, my), but now the PC is having some interesting problems. - unable to access the taskbar/system tray area; it is "hidden" - unable to utilize most control panel features; they start to load, then freeze - unable to choose a theme; they've all disappeared - the processes view within task manager shows no users for any processes - adapter shows in device manager, but no connections in network connections Needless to say, there are many, many other issues. In the end, I've nuked all the bad stuff, but apparently some necessary stuff as well. Is there an…

HD rpm 'load' fluctuation
by Guest KenM- 2 replies

Hi, My PC (DELL 3G dual core w/4G ram) seems to spend alot more time revving hard than it used to. When I chk. using Task Mgr. I find Helpsvc.exe and Mspeng.exe as big 'users', but I understand that's common. Typically I have the same 37 processes running that I always have had. I have set 'priority' to be given performance, over background services, (for online gaming). I'm only using 20G of 160 HD, would partitioning away 100G or so make a difference? Windows OneCare runs on schedule, and I've never experienced any more than 3% fragmentation. How can I reduce the 'load' to HD ? Thnx for any tips / tweaks that may help. KenM -- KenM

Hello, in one network we have the following problem: users on workstations can't use "save as" with any application such as Word, Notepad, Adobe PDF standard, to a 2003 R2 Server (no active directory). In this case the application hangs. All other functions, such as copy, delete, save ..., are working well. This happens on all clientcomputers in this enviorement. I tried it also with administrator-rights for this users. Has anyone a idea to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

Server loses Network shares on folders
by Guest krisl100- 3 replies

I am currently trying to solve a rather unusual issue. I have a Windows Server 2003 Standard with SP2, all updates done. It is connected to a Dell NAS storage device. We have some shares here for various users. For some reason, this morning, the shared folders were no longer shared. There were no errors in the event log. What could have caused this? I re-shared the folders, but I am concerned this will happen again, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ntbackup issue
by Guest Mike-in-Houston- 2 replies

I adopted a windows server 2003 SP1 client that wants to phase out there tape drive backup method that currently uses Symantec backup exec 10d. I'm reading up on that program now to see if it allows you to substitute rotating external USB drives for the tape drive it currently has configured. Meanwhile, I tried to schedule ntbackup to perform a backup nightly to an attached USB drive and it doesn't start up at the scheduled time. Manual starts work fine. Is it a logon permission issue? Did the Backup Exec program turn off this feature? Will updating to the current SP level fix it? One last thing. The server doesn't have a keyboard of monitor, so I…

Odd boot problem; requires slave device
by Guest djarvinen- 2 replies

I have an odd boot problem. I can only connect two IDE devices to my PC, so I often physically swap my CD/ROM with my 2nd hard drive, depending upon which one I need. If I have the 2nd hard drive or the CD/ROM attatched, no problem. But if leave the 2nd IDE slot 'empty', I get an error on boot, something like 'NTOS kernel corrupted' (sorry, don't remember exactly; I will get exact message if necessary), and the PC will not boot to Windows. But if I plug in a 2nd device (even if it is the CD/ROM drive WITHOUT a CD in it), the system boots fine. How weird is that? PS This happened when I had Win2K installed as well as with my new WinXP Pro system.

Disable sound in RDP not working
by Guest Chris- 4 replies

OK I have a TS 2008 server setup. GPEDIT I disable sound in TS. In terminal services config I disable redirection of sound. On the clients I disable redirection of sound. The server doesn't even have a sound card in it. What I get is the old PC speaker BEEP whenever a user clicks on confirmations like when they are printing. I even disabled PC speaker in the server and the remote workstation, it still beeps. Anyone have any ideas? Second question is printing from the server. IF they select extra copies of a print job they get multiples. Like if they was 2 copies, they get 4. Or if they want 3 copies they get 6. Any printer, any software. Seems like the T…

When I restart the server, the bios of motherboard shows 8GB Memory configured. But there is only 3.25GB in the computer properties and task manager in the Windows system. The windows operating system we are using: Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise version with SP2 32 bit. Is someone here to help me figure out the reason? Many thanks in advance Kind regards

TS keeping printers from old sessions
by Guest Kobus- 2 replies
Good Day Please can someone help, i have a Windows 2003 server with around 50 users connecting to it, sometimes the TS will keep their printers from previous sessions, so it will show two printers eg: HP1018 in session 10 and HP1018 in session 12 , i think this maybe from the users being disconnected if the line drops, or maybe if they close the terminal sever session by clicking on the cross at the top of the screen instead of logging off correctly by going, start - logoff. Another problem that happens is that quite often it will show all the printers on the server instead of just the users printers. So i was wandering if there was a way to stop th…

Reloading windows XP

I've just spent some time re-loading Windows XP on my 3 year old Evesham desktop PC, having decided to replace it with a Dell. I really only want it to act as a backup for things like scanning etc, as my broadband access is in a different part of the house. Having succeeded (largely), it now tells me I need to activate this in 28 days, and I'm assuming that this would need to be done over the internet. I haven't succeeded in setting up brroadband access on the PC - is there any other way of activating without having to bring the whole package downstairs, work out how to get on the net and go through it that way? I did look on the Microsoft website, b…

My issue is that we recently had our Server SBS 2003 rebuilt and the IT guy now tels me that we have to rebuild the Server 2000 which we used as a Terminal Server rebuilt but we do not have the paperwork for the CALS. So, I know we have 5 Cals but I cannot prove it and I have lost patience trying to get sense pout of the Microsoft people on 132058. Can anyone help or am I up the creek? Thank you, Les
