screen goes blank!

dell 1.8 GHz 1024 mg ram I've done an install of xp pro. Initially the comp. had win2000 but I'm fairly certain I followed the instructions to erase and set up a new partition for the install. I had xp running but couldn't get any video size larger than the 640 X ?. Can't remember exactly what the other number was! At that point somewhere, somehow I changed a setting in the display properties. I think I unchecked the box in display properties that says - use this devise as the primary monitor - thus after the initial start up screen where it shows windows starting up, and should then go to your desktop I get a blank screen. I've tried to f8 and get to sa…

Web Access Home Directory

I am a tech coordinator for a rural K-12 school district. I would like to provide a way for students to access their home directories through a web interface. As a school, my budget is not very big. Anybody know of any open source or inexpensive ways to do this. I have played with FTP and User Isolation on 2003, but I don't like the way that their passwords are visible in the addressbar and are sent via plain text. I would think this is something that would be on sourceforge but I have been unable to find anything easy. Thanks for any help.

Freezing when running programs and other things
by Guest Rob- 3 replies

Ok... so i just installed windows vista ultimate 64 bit version and after updating it all the way, it still freezes when the computer has to process alot of data, e.g. playing a game. Installing a game is a gamble because i hope that it doesnt freeze in the middle of it. the same thing happens when i try to download big files and also when i transfer data to an external hard drive. so basically, if i run a big program or transfer a lot of data, it freezes or just restarts the computer. if anybody can help that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Defrag no longer works!
by Guest Andrew- 3 replies

After installing update SP3 on my XP Home system, MSN Explorer took about 5 minutes to open because Windows Installer took its time! As MSN Explorer was needed to access my Hotmail accounts, I decided enough was enough and uninstalled SP3. It's back to normal now and opens on the click! However, the disc defragmenter no longer works and shows the following message: MCC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient rights to the file. Have searched for dgfrg.msc. and only found four dfrgf file…

Greeting friends, I'm using Windows xp media center pro w/sp2. For quite awhile now about every other time I open IE7 I get an error "ps2.exe has encountered a problem and must close"... I'm given the option of debugging or sending an error report to microsoft. Also, the same error message occurs at the damndest times when I'm using my Realplayer Plus subscription. I think it is what has been causing that program's files to become corrupted which has made me loose all my saved playlists, etc. This is very frustrating since noone at real seems to care much about focusing …

Windows Installer box keeps appearing
by Guest kernow- 11 replies

Just recently a Windows Installer box appears when installing new programs and when I log out. The box appears for just a second and I hear the hard drive run with a couple of "clicks". I thinks that the problem started after a recent Windows Update automatic download. I have searched this discussion group for this problem but without finding the exact same problem. I'm sorry if this is not the correct group for my question.

I have a small Server 2000 AD network that I'm considering upgrading. It has five CALs and five Terminal Server CALs. The Terminal Server CALs are actually downgrades from Server 2003, so they shouldn't be a problem. I have a copy of Server 2003 Standard, but no CALs. Is there an upgrade path for the Server 2000 CALs to Server 2003, or do I have to buy a whole new 5 pack of CALs? -- Aaron Clausen mightymartianca@gmail.com

Terminal Server Performance

We are having poor performance on our terminal server. We only have about 100 users on one server with 2 processors and 8 gigs of ram. The poor performance seems to coincide with high/read writes on our C: drive. Could the drive itself be the bottleneck or the network itself?...Thanks...Grecko

How do you remove virus from restore point on USB backup drive?
by Guest tcruise- 4 replies

A friend has a USB backup drive that has a virus in a restore point. I guess that he removed the virus from his C drive, but has backed up infected restore points on his USB backup drive. I know how to remove restore points with disk cleanup on the C drive, but how can one do it on his USB (maybe firewire) H:/ backup drive?. If I understand correctly one cannot boot into safe mode and have USB drives work? T.C.

Sudden Failure of Windows Installer
by Guest John McGaw- 2 replies

Background: I was trying to install a new upgrade to Perfect Disk 8 using its standard built-in upgrade process which uses Windows Installer along the way. I got a consistent series of failures each culminating in a "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed" - type error message. After a few rounds I tried the upgrade on my two other XP SP3 systems (Pro and MCE) and a W2K system and it worked fine on each. I researched everything I could find online about installer failures and found that the promoted fixes were few and far between but I think that I eventually tried every one of them, all to no avail. Then, following the axiom of "undo what …

how to publish the server

Hi, Need some help here, for a basic question I just can't seem to master. I have 3 external ip addresses assigned to me by my ISP, say ranges 80.369.20.20 thru .22. I also have 3 servers set up correctly in my LAN, ranges 192.168.2.2 thru .4 What I want to do, is make it so someone can type in http://80.369.20.20 in their browser and it ends up connecting to the server I have in my internal LAN with IP address 192.168.2.2 I'm new to networking, and can't find anything that explains how to map the external IP address to a specifi server in my LAN. I don't see anything in the Firewall that does this, nor in the switch I have. How is this accomplished? T…

DOS Data

This might be of some use to someone. If you can't transmit or Sync data to and from an external device, while using a DOS program in Windows, and you're sure the cable is hooked up to the com/port and secure, try this. Go into "true command prompt". This is not the one in Accessaries. You need Windows completly closed. In '98 it's a shut down option. In ME, open in Safe Mode, then Accessaries, MS DOS Prompt. Make sure everything is set to be compatible (bits, parody, transfer speed etc.). Voila! Your old reliable (Casio Boss?) still has some miles left. -- Corday

I am a new member. Whats "upgrading" and "updating"?
by Guest Dave- 6 replies

Hi everyone. I just registered as a new member in this forum. Happy to join you. I acquired a labtop about three months ago. Please, I need to understand, what actually is meant by the terms “upgrade” and “update”. Does “upgrading” and “updating” mean the same thing? What is the effect of upgrading and updating through the internet on the system files of a computer? Can a computer that has some damage system files or program files be restored or repaired by upgrading or updating via internet?

.bat / Dos Script Issues.
by Guest Kardon Coupé- 3 replies

Dear All, I'm having a bit of a problem with a .bat script and I can't find a newsgroup specific to this and was wondering if anybody can help.... I've got a regular issue of having to right click on a custom file and rar'ing it up, then copying the file to a location (which doesn't change) on a networked drive... I tried to make a .bat script that says... "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\rar.exe" %1.rar a -ad %1 >output.txt {output.txt was just to see if there are any errors) xcopy [newfilecreated] [networkdrivelocation] /Y Then, setup a 'Right Click' option for the context menu that says, 'Rar 'n' Copy' then I right click on the file, choose it and…

Any bad experiences switching licenses from server mode to user mo
by Guest Lynnex1138- 1 reply

We have seven servers on our domain, 6 are domain controllers. We are about to switch our licensing from per server to per user mode. Right now the numbers reflected in the license manager do not make sense and I've been told by others the license manager is unreliable anyway and should be ignored. Has anyone made this switch and had a bad experience? I was going to pick one server that would have the least impact on the network if something went wrong yet still provide a good test. Any feedback on unexpected/bad results happening with the switch from per server to per user is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Windows XP reinstall problem
by Guest asdenning- 2 replies

I recently reinstalled Windows XP from the recovery disks provided when I purchased my HP laptop due to a major Windows crash. While going through the install a number of notice came up saying that Windows was unable to find/install certain files (I'd say approximately 50-100 files). Windows now runs and is able to access the internet, run office, etc., but certain things remain out of whack. For example, the computer is unable to install my sound card due to missing files; also, the battery no longer communicates with the computer correctly and I am forced to run the laptop plugged-in. When I tried to do the whole "reinstall windows from recovery disk" th…
