I am working on a file server that is running WS2003R2. That I need help with the correct permissions (this was setup before me, so I am trying to figure out the logic of it). There is a top Level Share called PUBLIC. * All Domain Users and also a Public Level Security User Group (PLSG - all domain users belong to it). * Both of these accounts have Read only access applied to "This Folder, only" (there are no files in the top level folder). The next level down are some more organization folders Programs, Archive, etc. * The PLSG has Read only acceess appllied to "This Folder only). * There are no files in these folders Inside of each folder are fol…

UAC, Vista and Logon Scripts
by Guest Adrian Marsh (NNTP)- 1 reply

Hi All, I'm interested in finding out how people have handled domain login scripts running in Vista, and how you handled the UAC. My servers are 2003 based, originally an SBS2003 server. I use the login scripts to deploy small generic apps, configure printers etc. Now if i run these under Vista, UAC is constantly stopping the login process. All my users are Admins of their local PCs. I think in XP there was a setting for elevated permissions, but does this apply to UAC in vista? How else has it been handled? Thanks, Adrian

service packs

I am having difficulty adding a few components to my computer. I have XP and had it up to SP3. I have cleaned things by unistalling and removing through Add/Remove. Included in this were all the updates along the way over the past five years. For example in trying to add fax service, it is asking for my CD of SP3. I don't have that, only the original CD. I am guessing that I may have deleted some important files in previous updates. Should I be going to Microsoft's website to reinstall updates that go all the way back? Should I reinstall SP3 or even go to SP2 and then SP3. Any thoughts

Duplicate Toolbars
by Guest Yuri NLD- 1 reply

When users logon to the terminal server. They sometimes have multiple toolbars in their taskbar. The toolbars are empty. When the user opens a program: the program is listed twice in the taskbar. The running programs, sort of speak, appears in two toolbars. It looks like the taskbar is duplicated. The other 5 toolbars stay empty. This phenomenon does not happen when an administrator log on to the terminal server. The terminal server is locked down with a GPO. Users are not allowed to make changes to the taskbar. (so they can’t close them now). The terminal server is W2K3,sp2 and member of a W2K3 domain. There might be chance that some toolbars are (e…

I have automatic updates set to check daily for updates and to download them automatically. I noticed in eventvwr that windows checks for updates every hour all day long - every day. Should it be doing that? I would have assumed it would check one time each day at the time specified.

Something Seriously Wrong

I have no idea what is wrong with my computer. But it just keeps getting worse. I keep getting these adware or spyware or something? It's like Windows XP Virus Detector things that keep popping up. Now I got one that said Windows Vista, and I don't even have Vista. I think it got removed when I ran the Anti spyware program I have. The computer seems to be working better. Except now when I go to start menu, there's not options for programs, or run, or control panel or anything like that. Anyone know what is going on, or have any advice to fix it? :[

Virtual Disk Drive - 2008? 2TB limit?
by Guest boe- 1 reply

Hello, I set up a copy of 2008 on my home PC and everything seemed normal to me but then again I don't have a disk array on my home PC. I have a dell 2900 with a 6i controller. It was set for RAID 5 when I got it with two virtual drives in the controller set up. I wanted to be able to partition it any way I wanted. The server has about 3.5 TB usable space. I deleted the virtual disk in the controller set up and installed a single 3.5 TB vitual drive. When I installed Windows 2008, it saw the single drive and I created a 75GB partition for the OS. When I finished installing the 2008 and I logged in for the first time, I went to disk man…

Removal of braviax.exe
by Guest AllenH- 5 replies
I inadvertantly opened an email which has left me with an icon on the toolbar which constantly pops up telling me my computer is infected. Windows OneCare appears to have removed the infection (or tells me it has detected and removed it) but the icon is still there and I get constant pop-ups. The thing seems to be lodged as Braviax.exe in C;\windows\system32 and is 9kb. I've tried deleting it but it won't move. Has anyone any idea how I can get rid of the thing? It's in XP, by the way (not Vista). Allen -- Now enjoying Vista after 8 months of frustration!

On Windows 2003 SP2, does the service pack have to be re-applied if you add any system components later on? e.g IIS. I know this was the case on earlier OS like NT4.

Yet another Shutdown Problem
by Guest KWS- 2 replies

Windows XP Media Edition When I perform start - turn off computer - turn off, the last panel with the turn off options disappears but the shutdown/turn off sequence does not start. I can then do it again and the sequence completes normally. Sometimes, it works the first time but usually I have to do it twice. This started recently and, unfortunately, I am not able to relate it to something else I did at the time, such as changing settings or installing new software. Any ideas as to where to look? Thanks Ken

Installation locks up eating memory
by Guest Adrian Brown- 11 replies

Hi I posted a few days ago about a problem with SBS2003 fresh install locking up during server tools setup on Internet Explorer 6.0 installtion. I had a reply saying it was probably due to an active internet connection. Since this i have installed a brand new harddrive and pulled the plug on the router while attempting the setup. Again the initial part of the setup is fine, its when it gets to the actual server configuration. Its gets as far as installing server tools, the message says its doing internet explorer 6.0. Ive left it at this point for several hours and it gets no futher. A look in the process list shows the setup process is just eating more an…

upgrade RAM, now Windows will not boot, error message
by Guest Stephen Frog- 3 replies

I recently upgraded the memory on an older HP Pavilion from 192mb to 512mb (the maximum this computer will take). When I start the machine, I get a full page error message that starts with the sentence: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." Then farther down the page it suggests alternatives - safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, use last known good configuration or start windows normally. I've tried all of those but none work. I can get into the BIOS setup with F1 at the blue HP screen, but I don't know what I'm doing t…

Started getting the "WI could not be accessed" crap, with the occasional 1601 error (which I understand is the same error). I have done EVERY suggestion I have found here on the website, plus others from elsewhere, multiple times, but the damn thing still won't play nice. Now, it has starting running every time I reboot, although it doesn't seem to do anything. For a while, it was starting up when I would click-and-drag, launch other programs, etc. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE -- someone give me something new (hopefully other than reinstalling my entire computer... I just do not have the time to keep wasting on this BS.) Thanks.

Cisco Security Agent does not run on Vista 64
by Guest Dave W- 3 replies

My company depends on Cisco Security Agent (CSA). The current version supports Vista but not Vista 64. The reason Cisco gives is that Microsoft will not share enough information to allow Cisco to create a version of CSA that works on Vista 64. So Cisco blames Microsoft. But, if we deploy Vista, it will be on new PC's. New PC's come with 64-bit OS capable CPU's. But we depend on CSA, so ultimately, the blame for not being able to deploy Vista is Microsoft's fault (according the Cisco). Will Microsoft ever do anything to remedy this situation?
