XP updates - where are they ?
by Guest RJK- 2 replies

Earlier today, whilst AVG did an update, XP's automatic update "Gold Shield" appeared briefly in my system tray, and obviously downloaded something because when I go to Shut Down, there are options to Shut Down with, or without, installing the Windows updates ! ...and the "gold shield" has disappeared from system tray. Just out of curiosity where are the XP updates, and how would one find them to signal XP to install them - i.e. what determines when the "gold shield" appears in system tray ? ...I guess that, if I shut down without installing them on the way out form this session, the Gold Shield will appear during my next Windows session. ? rega…

by Guest Kyle- 6 replies

Hi, I installed XPSP3 on my system leaving 100MB free at the end of the disk. I start XP, run disk management, select the empty part of the drive, tell it to create a primary partition, and format it fat32. XP thinks everything is great. I copy files to the drive and reboot with a windows 98 boot disk. The boot disk only see the fat16 filenames. Thislongfilename.txt became Thislo~1.txt Did I do something wrong? How do I get my long filenames back? Thanks,

Vides Fill screen on external monitor...

Using XP Pro (with latest upgrades) on high end laptop connected to a docking station that has an external VGA 22" monitor connect to it. When I watch a video from a website, on the laptop screen you see what you would expect, but on the external monitor, the video will fill my external monitor screen 100%. I normally use windows meda player. In skype, for example, if on a video conference call, the laptop will be as expected but the external monitor will be to 100% sized videos rapidly flashing back and forth between each other. It's very annoying to have video in full screen because you loose your mouse and you're unable to to see the program . D…

Server 2003 R2 SP1 wacked after updates. Should I restore systemstate?
by Guest barretech@hotmail.com- 4 replies

HI. I have a server 2003 R2 standalone DC with SP1 that we installed updates onto last night (about 25 updates). Now it seems to have some kind of problem with serving files. I have already gone into the Windows folder and one by one in proper order used "spuninst.exe" to remove each update. Didn't reboot between the uninstalls. Maybe I should have. Question:Should I restore the system state from the time before the updates were installed? I have a USB hard drive (actually two) with system state backups. I sure hope USB is supported during system state restores. Do I need to use Active Directory restore mode for this? Here is more info that led me to b…

My hdd is divided into C: & E: partitions with D: been the DVD RW. Apart from the folders that I created in E: also, there are RECYCLER folder and System Volume Information. Getting very annoyed that it always starts to chkdsk E: upon reboot. There is no schedule to run the chkdsk and I just dont know how to stop it from checking each time when we boot. Comptemplating to reformat E; but do not know whether its safe to do so because of the presence of RECYCLER/SVI folders. Anyone can advice and with thanks

We have 300 computers and soon we will change part of them, but we have problem to choose graphic card for the new ones. What we can gain buing more advanced card? We had AGP Matrox milennium with 32MB RAM. I tested some new ATI and NVidia card with 512 MB RAM, both with DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 and I do not see the difference besides that the last ones get more hot and need better cooling. What is all about this stupid mess with graphic cards? Who need faster one than those with AGP contact. I tested also some cards at my home computer with PCIexpressx16 and I really do not see any difference in speed compared to the AGP cards. At work people are using W…

HP printer drivers on a TS
by Guest yaro137@googlemail.com- 9 replies

I'm having a problem installing HP printer driver on a TS to which I'm connecting remotely. Basically when I start the .exe driver file downloaded from HP's website it tells me that I have to use 16bit colour display to run this driver. Why on earth do I need 16bit colour depth to install a bloody driver in the first place?! Anyway, I set up my remote desktop connection to use 16bit colour space just to find out that when I'm connected it gives me 256 colours only. Eventually I extracted the .exe with winrar but now I've got another problem. There are plenty of .inf files in there and I've got no idea which one should I use. Any help on this? Cheers yaro

Windows 2008 Network Level Authentication
by Guest Doug Murphy- 2 replies

Ok, I have read all the threads about CredSSP and XP clients, and have even tested the change sucessfully. My issue is a little broader, however: I have 4,000+ users, with a mix of XP and Vista (probably) that need to access , consistently, a 4 server farm that consists of 2 physical servers and 2 VMs under Hyper-V (these are on another server). All 4 are Windows Server 2008. This is working just fine using a CoyotePoint Equalizer as a hardware load balancer. However, these servers are in a Windows 2003 domain, and we have no plans to change that in the near future. I have no control over the bulk of the remote users, as they are home systems or belo…

MBR error

Hi all, I have a question someone might have an answer to. I have a Compaq desktop (4yrs old) running XP sp2 (has now been updated to SP3). At boot up a couple of days ago I got the message "Master Boot Record Error". I hit "enter" and booted up as normal, there were no obvious problems, everything worked ok as it normally does. After looking through the comments on this site and trying some of the suggestions therein, I decide to do a new install. I've found in the past it's good to get rid of all the crap and re-install. After the re-install I got exactly the same message. So I thought I'd try another drive, well I did and got exactly the same error.…

X-Forest GPO Machine Assigned Software Deployment
by Guest cbtg2006- 1 reply

Hi guys, We're in the middle of a migration from a Win2K forest to a Win2K3 forest and I'm having fun with Group Policies. We use GPO to deploy Office 2000 to clients, this is a machine assigned application. I have migrated the policy using GPMC but software deployments do not work from a workstation in the new domain trying to receive the source installation files form a machine in the old domain. I have even tried this with a new policy created in the new domain using MSI source files from the old domain. I guess my question is, initially simple; is it possible to deploy machine assigned software via Group Policy in a multi-forest environment? The fo…
