I recently installed version 2.1 of the Security Analyzer to check my XP_sp3 machine for security issues and got a few minor issues corrected. For whatever reason, whenever an update has come out... The update has failed when I allow it to install automatically. With the Security Analyzer I can at least see what's missing, download the update manually, and install it with no problems. RE: Destop icons disappeared I have the same basic problem. I have downloaded the suggested vbs script and have on the broken computer but do not know how to run the script. Is there a way to stop the Desktop Cleanup Wizard bubble from ever popping up again for our end users? The desktop properties tab that contains that is disabled due to group policy and I'd hate to undo that if not necessary. Thanks.

Hello. Usually, I have no problems with figuring out how do things on the PC (except getting it to actually work WELL compared to mac :D) But I have a problem. I started using the computer on the default admin name. Now however, I'd like to add a regular user for other people, but it wont let me since there are no admin accounts. (Well, except the one titled ADMINISTRATOR, but who cares about that) I need to make a new admin account. But, I'd like to transfer the settings from the Admin account I'm using now. How can I do this? Would copying and pasting the user setings folder work? Or is there some hidden feature I'm unaware of?

I have a tower running WinXP Pro with two hard drives: the first is running the OS and programs; the second I use as network storage over my wireless home network. I recently upgraded the network drive from 120 gigs to 500 gigs. Since doing so, the 500 never goes into sleep mode, as the 120 used to after 10 minutes; the 500 just keeps spinning away. I've reset the power program under properties on the desktop with no success. Any suggestions? Thank you, Ernie

And my > 5 year old 120 Gb HD is failing, so I bought one of those nice fast Seagate sata2 320Gb barracuda. Should I re-frase the subject line to: "I use linux" ? Or is there some hope ? I remember when I used windows 95 2Gb was a big problem, but I solved that with a bios and fdisk update. TIA

Hello Everyone: I got one that someone in here that may be able to answer real quick. I was given a laptop to clean some viruses and spyware off of, but someone else already had been in it and made things a lot worse for me. Anyways, I was able to get all the viruses and spyware off, but I was having a problem with the "Plug and Play" service hanging the taskbar on boot as well as locking up on shutdown. After messing around in msconfig for a while I was able to narrow it down to the "Plug and Play" service and disabled it. We have a 2003 domain environment, using AD and GP. Client computers are XP. I want to disable or prevent right clicking anything with the mouse. Is there a setting in Group Policy that will accomplish this? Jim

Hi, We are using windows 2008 server in our organistaion.From the client side we have two system one is with windows vista operating system and one is with windows xp operating system., Both the user will login to the application using rdp session we configured using ssl vpn settings. I have a unique question/problem. I have 7 home-built pc's all running different hardware with Win XP Home (OEM) installed in each. I need a magnifier to read the COA stickers, so I took the liberty of writing the product keys on the cd case for each machine. The kids are always messing something up, so fresh installs are common around here. During a reinstall on pc1, I inadvertantly used the wrong product key (COA), and it was activated over the net before I knew there was a problem. Hi, when I shut down windows I am getting the following window : End Program - deviceIO - program not responding then End Program - hpqste08.exe - program not responding. I have to wait for the program to try and end, but then have to click end program. Doesnt seem to be affecting windows but it is nagging me! The only programs I have installed since getting my laptop last week are the software for my HP printer, adobe and itunes. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful!

My son has moved to Germany and taken his pc with him. Upon trying to register with a new Internet Service Privider (T.Com) the software CD they sent him will not load. When he tries to load it a message pops up saying "The country version of your operating system is not German - it cannot be identified. The installation is therfore aborted." My question is how can he change the country version so that he can load the required software? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

I made a bad attempt to install XP Pro on a W98 desktop . It only got to setup stage and when I boot I now get the 15secs choice of W98 or XP Pro. I want to stay with W98 on this machine. I cannot remove the XP Pro setup from my 'remove prog's' . Is ther any way of reverting to clean W98 boot? Reggie D.

When I have a folder window open the search button isn't working. When I click the button nothing happens. The search feature works correctly from the Start menu and if I press F3. Anybody ever encounter this before?

Is there any way I can unpartition a drive? This one is partitioned in the middle of an old 40GB drive and there is ZERO data on the one side that I'd like to get rid of. I do not have any partitioning software installed on WinXP.

One of my computers (running XP Pro SP3) will not boot into Windows! I have no idea what caused this! It starts up, goes through the first part of the boot process, but will not boot into Windows, other than safe mode. When it gets to a certain point, it always reboots and starts over, never loading Windows at all. I've gone into the BIOS setup utility (Thinkpad R60), but cannot find anything to fix it there. I can boot into safe (regular, with networking, or command prompt) mode, but not into regular mode. Ok, so I´ve tried "bootcfg /rebuild", which results in a Fail, a message telling me that it´s not possible to search for windows installations and that Bootcfg can´t search the harddrive correctly. So i do chkdsk, and everything´s apparently fine. I´ve also tried the "expand d:\i386...hal.dll"-command, which results in a "can´t find file or cataloge". What to do?

My DVD drive does not read cd's. It used work occasionally but now not at all. The light goes on when the cd is inserted but then it cannot be read. I am trying to load music to my Ipod.

Hi, My domain controller is not running any application. if I click on anti virus Icon it will displayed an errror msg "Cannot find the file 'C:\Program Files\Quick Heal\Quick Heal Total Security\SCANNER.EXE' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." The same kind of error msg is displayed for any application like , IE, outlook express, backup and many more.
