Acronis 7/XP Questions 1 2 3 4
by Guest Frog- 83 replies

I have a new computer that has Windows XP software loaded on it. The computer includes a floppy drive (A drive) and a read/write CD/DVD player in it. I also have a copy of Acronis 7 backup software that I previously used on my old Windows 98SE system. Now, for my questions: Is Acronis 7 compatible with a Windows XP machine? I think, based on my research on the Web, that it is compatible. The newer version 11 seems to have many new whistles and bells included in the software, but I don't think I would ever use any of this expanded capability. Secondly, is it better to have my backups on my hard drive (E Drive) or separate CDs? What are the pros and…

Computer Will Not Start

I was on my computer playing a game, (PC game, not online) and it loaded slow on a particular item(downloaded online) I clicked on. I assumed it froze on me although the hour glass was still spinning so I click 'Ctrl Alt Delete' at once to end the task for the game. It didn't show so I pressed it several more times. After a while the item from the game finally loaded. But the game went very slow so I exited the game. However, I couldn't exit properly because the task window said it was 'Not REsponding' so I had to shut my computer off myself by holding down the power button until it shut down. After a few seconds I turned it back on. I got a black screen t…

Windows XP not booting

Hello, all. I hope someone can help. I'm running Windows XP (pretty sure SP3 installed by now) on an old Compaq Presario desktop. Yesterday, I was noticing that things were quite slow and the hard drive was whirring like mad. I shut down normally, waited a few minutes, and rebooted. The windows logo on the black screen (with the status bar) came up briefly, the screen went black (as usual), and then the windows logo came up on the light blue background....and froze. The hard drive seemed active, but even after letting it sit and stew overnight, nothing happened. Same logo in the morning. It didn't get to the list of windows users in order to logon…

Workgroup Question
by Guest AlvinG- 2 replies

I have a server running Server 2003 Standard that I want to set up for a small group of computers running WinXP Pro for file sharing purposes. I want to leave the server and computers in a workgroup, rather than adding them to my domain. Question: If I create a unique workgroup on the server, is there a way to add some type of security to that workgroup that would prevent users from adding unauthorized or unwanted computers to that workgroup? Some what like joining a computer to a domain which has to be done with an account with proper rights. Thanks

SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64
by Guest Denise- 7 replies

I've just gone around and around the Microsoft site trying to find an SP2 or SP3 download for Windows XP Pro x64. When I chose x64, it was for Vista only. When I went to http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/default.mspx, there is no category for XP Pro x64. I could try a guess . . . maybe I should use the Vista x64 since it's an x64 update or maybe I should use the Windows Server 2003 update, or maybe even Windows XP. When is Microsoft going to realize that XP Pro x64 needs its own category. I have the same problem when I try to download most programs. They're good for Vista x64, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, but very few of them…

SATA Drives Optical and HD

My motherboard has four (4) sata ports/connectors and one (1) ide conector. I can populate 3 of the 4 sata port with 2 HD's and 1 optical drive and the motherboard bios sees all three. I can also use the ide connector for another optical drive and it is recognized if I enable the jmicron driver in the bios. I have all of this installed on my computer. Running XP Pro already installed. When I log on to XP and go to "My Computer" the main HD show up and depending on how I have the sata ports configured the 2nd HD will show but the sata optical will not or the optical will show and the and the 2nd HD will not. If I enable the jmicron driver the ide optical…

Re: broadband I am writing this letter to ALL Wireless Router manufacturers. I have a Linksys Wireless Router Model:BEFW11S4. It is 7 years (yes, count them, all of seven little years) old. I have visited the Linksys website numerous times trying to set up the WEP/WPA security on that wireless router (as all responsible wireless router owners should!). I found that there are no links to any wireless router setting websites that are congruent with the screen shots from Linksys' own self help technical support site. I have had to call Linksys several times to resolve this issue only to be placed on hold for lengthy times (sometimes my call was droppe…

Wireless access point periodically fails...?
by Guest Kenneth- 20 replies

Howdy, We use a Linksys wireless access point in our home... On occasion (and apparently randomly) the systems show a message saying "Unable to connect to wireless network." At that point, if I try to reconnect, I see a dialog saying "Waiting for network" but no connect is created. When that happens, I have learned that if I power down the wireless access point, and power it up again, all the systems will connect in moments. What might be causing such a failure of the wireless, and might there be a way to correct it? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Search mysteries in xp
by Guest Cheska99- 1 reply

I've finally got one of my computers to run search really fast--and it's becoming a really useful tool for me, finally. But I'm confused about many of its ways. For example, when I look to see where the file it's found is located, it will give me incomplete information. It says a file is on my desktop, but it's not visible to me on the desktop and must be within at least one folder. Do you know of any good tuts that delve deeply into the search feature so that I can really make it work for me?
