taskbar annoyance
by Guest Paul Pedersen- 6 replies

I use applications that have buttons near the bottom of the screen. If I move the mouse to those buttons and click, the taskbar unexpectedly jumps up and intercepts the click. I assume that Windows thinks it is being helpful, but this is really a pia. How can I turn off this "feature"? "Enhance pointer precision" is off.

Windows XP Theme & SP3
by Guest WJB- 3 replies

Hi, I just installed Windows XP Pro SP3, and when I rebooted, my display theme reverted back to the old Windows 2000 classic theme. The original Windows installation was Windows XP Pro SP2, so there's never been any hint on this computer of Windows 2000. The display theme does indicate it is set to Windows XP (the default blue theme). I even tried to change it to Olive Green then to Blue again hoping to trigger a change, but no success. Is this an SP3 issue or is there something I can change in my configuration? Thanks

Automatic updates becoming compulsory?
by Guest spamlet- 12 replies

I have noticed of late, a tendency for automatic updates to just start up on their own without any warning. On a laptop with little space, I recently had to pull the plug pdq to stop service pack three loading without so much as a by your leave. Then today I turn on my pc (XPPro) and instantly the little shield appears telling me it's downloading updates, with no indication of what or why. Again, luckily, I have a wireless connection and can instantly pull the usb dongle... I always have my machines set to inform me of updates and only allow those that I particularly want. Now I find that the pc has been reset to completely automatic without any ac…

Cant Install Some Programs
by Guest JCO- 8 replies

A friend of mine is running Windows Media Center. He had a virus and killed his system so I restored it from an image that was a year old. We put Service Pack 3 on his computer and updated all critical patches. Installed Explorer 7 too. Before the virus, he never had Service Pack 3 or IE 7 but I installed them since I wanted to get him all up to date before he takes his computer home. When he took the computer home, to install his personal software, he ran into similar issues with two of the installations. Quicken 5 and FireFox will not install. Firefox error indicates that it can't write to the Registry and the Quicken 5 error states something si…

Hi All, We are just embarking on a total Infrastructure revamp. Conveting from NT4, W98 clients to WK3, Vista clients. We need to focus on Data Migration and in particular exchange from NT4 to WK3. Does anyone have any tips on anything relating to conversion from NT4 to WK3 that could be of use? Any information would be greatfully received. Regards. -- Flinty

Converting Dynamic Disk back to a basic disk
by Guest Saral6978- 5 replies

This is my situation - I have an old HP storageworks attached via SCSI cable to an HP Proliant DL380, Windows 2003 SP2. When the storageworks got migrated to this server, I accidentally converted the array to a Dynamic disk. I have since removed all data from this volume, and the only thing left is the System Volume Info and Recycler folders (hidden folders). I understand the first step in converting back to basic is to delete the volume itself (using Disk Mgmt). I attempt this step and I get the following warning: "The volume storage (E:) Simple volume is currently in use. To force the deletion of this volume, click Yes. Warning, forcing a deleti…

We currently have a GPO set for our eventlog sizes. We would like to remove the GPO, but in testing have seen that the event log drops back to the setting(s) that were in place prior to the GPO. Is there a location in the registry that 'saves' these old settings? Thanks Ken

Remote desktop typing wrong keys
by Guest Mltwwlco@noemail.noemail- 5 replies

I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 system that seems to re-map the keyboard from a standard QWERTY US 101 keyboard to the strange one displayed in the enclosed jpg. This occurs AFTER login, because I am able to type both the username and password without problems. Rebooting the remote system did not solve the problem, and the same wrong keyboard mapping occurs when connecting from a Vista Ultimate SP1 laptop (numlock was not the cause of the problem) as well as an ancient Windows 2000 Pro SP4 desktop. I need to fix this ASAP, since using the onscreen keyboard is killing my productivity!

Hello, please could I ask for some tips from more expert users of XP. I have a standard PC running XP Pro with an Administrator account. Our need is to add a limited user account, I know how to do this. Ideally what I need to happen is when the PC starts up it automatically logs onto the Limited account. Its for a hospital radio station and runs some overnight music. The program would be in the start up menu but I just need the PC to log into the Limited account as there may be no one around. Many thanks for your help

I need to be able to open an explorer window showing a folder found in the users "My Documents" folder. I need to do this via a .bat file. I know I can use variable like %userprofile% to find the users profile folder under "Documents and Settings" but on some of the systems where I need this function "My Documents" will not be found under "Documents and Settings". For example I have several PCs where it is found at the root of drive U. (A thawed part of a frozen computer). Whether "My Documents" is found in a profile folder under "Documents and Settings" or ANY OTHER place on the system I need to be able to have an explorer window open up to it. I am cu…
