Got cheap Storm Surge sound card that Loses sound on Restarting. If I open tray icon & make any adjustment it comes on ok. Onboard sound originally with it I disabled in DManager but didnt remove. Any ideas except 'update driver'? Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A working unsecure OS is infinitely better than non-working secure OS. Just spent 1 week cleaning up the mess WUpdate made preventing hypothetical security problems. http://microscum.com/comsense/

Can’t open files from “My Documents” after copying to them to DVD
by Guest peter_greve- 11 replies

About a year ago I had a laptop supplied by my employer where I among my work stuff had a lot of private documents, pictures, etc. I used Nero burning program and burnt all the files from the path "C:\Documents and Settings\Peter\”My documents” and "Desktop” and “Favorites” to a DVD Now I checked the burned DVD to ensure that the files had been copied and working. It was possible to open the files on the same computer. Today – a year later - I need to use some of the documents in “My documents” and tried to open them with their associated programs - Word, Excel, Acrobat Reader, etc. - and all I get is an error message saying that the files are dama…

Can I do a Batch (.bat) file to change the screensaver time?
by Guest magmike- 8 replies
I would super love to be able to have a shortcut on my desktop or quick launch bar to change my screen saver active time. Because it is password protected, I like it to activate within the minimum time (1 minute) when I leave my desk - but when I am at my desk, it is annoying to have to log on every time I get distracted from computer for more than one minute. And clicking a button or shortcut would certainly be easier than logging off, or going to display settings everytime my boss calls me into his office or I go to the restroom. Does anyone know how to do this in a batch file or some other way? Thanks in advance for your help! magmike

Thanks, Lee G. xp sp3

System Configuration Utility message on startup
by Guest sheana- 4 replies

Over the past few days when I bootup my computer, the System Configuration Utility window pops up. It has the following message: You have used the Sys Config Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. .....is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing the message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the SCU. I don't recall making any changes to startup..Can I just select Normal Startup mode, or is something else going on and if so, what should I do? Thanks in advance, sheana

Hi, I have two HP Pavilion PCs, one running Vista32 and the other one running Vista64. On Vista32, Quicktime Player is starting in about 7 seconds, the same procedure takes up to one minute when starting on Vista64. Is there any known issue, any remedy that could help? I tried switching off Prefetch, I deactivated Aero, but no success. Using Quicktime Alternative is not an option because I need QT installed for another application. TIA, Michael

by Guest Fox1977- 5 replies

Hi, We recently updated a number of our office PCs with the windows xp service pack 3 update, since the update a number of users are having issue with the mapping for there active directory home folder. The user normally has a H drive that is mapped to their own share. We are running a windows 2003 domain controller and when the user logs in it doesn't map the H drive. There are no errors reported in the event viewer and when the user logs in to a SP2 machine there home drive maps fine. we also have a log in script to map a number of other drives, this is working fine regardless of which service pack is installed. As a test on one of the PCs I rolled back …

Using the Settings and File Transfer Wizard
by Guest Jack Gillis- 6 replies

I have read about the Settings and File Transfer wizard for years but there is at least one thing I don't understand that is important to me now that I think I need to use it. I am about to assemble a new computer and want to know how to transfer all,if not most, of the programs installed on the old one to the new one. I feel confident in getting all the files I want in 'Programs Files' from the old one to the new one but can someone tell me how I get their Registry entries or any other required system info over to the new one? The old one has XP Home as probably will the new one. (I might wind up with XP Pro on the new one because I have an unused l…

I was wondering - I have had issues with Adobe.. I uninstalled and re-installed, although was difficult to do. My daughter loves the Webkinz site.. when she is on it - certain things call for adobe flash. It gets an error message that"a script in the movie is causing adobe to run slowly. continuing may cause computer to become unresponsive" if I abort - it does not allow access to that area of the website.... if I continue - I have to do so multiple times before it will allow access... Any suggestiions?
