Legacy Operating Systems

I have Windows XP Pro SP3 on my computer. I also have 3 external drives connected with USB to IDE cables. I used to be able to use these drives with no problem, but I have had to format my HDD and reinstall Windows about 6 times now. These drives are no longer visible in My Computer. When I go to Device Manager it shows the 3 drives with a yellow exclamation point. I have attempted to reinstall these drivers, using my Windows disk, to no avail. The cables came without drivers, stating that Windows had the drivers already. Can anyone help me to install the needed drivers or where I may be able to find them?

The PATH variable ends with this unwanted path extension: c:\PROGRA~1\iverilog\bin; I don't why/how it's there and where it comes from. I disintalled the related SW as per guidelines. What can I do in order to avoid the addition of such extension every time the PC get powered up? Thanks!

I think it was Windows 98 that had a wallpaper file of a blue window in an adobe house, with various dried plants around it. Does anyone have a copy of that .bmp they can send to me at scottpcook@gmail.com? Thanks.

I administer a Windows 2003 domain. All servers have some flavor of Win2003 server. Two of my older servers have very limited space on the disk that has the system drive (C:\). When the unused space falls below 10% of the drive's total space we start having problems especially on the server that has Exchange 2003. I have moved everything I can from the system drives and compressed what I cannot move but the space problem remains. What I need to do is to replace these old small drives with a larger drive. Is there a reference that addresses this issue and shows me a reliable procedure for replacing a system drive. All my data is backed up.

I have got an old server that needs to be shut down. I have tried to do this, but my users are accessing files on the new server fine, but the template location still points to the old server, that hasn't had the templates running on it for 8 or 9 months. But when they create a document, rather than going new, they just open an exisiting file. Is there any way I can repoint all these files to look in the correct location of the templates? Or use Server redirection in someway to point them to the correct place. Can anyone please help me with the Redir command syntax. The old location is abcserver\templates, the new location is abc-storage\templates.

As soon as I logon to XP it start to load the user settings and then almost right away logs off of its own accord and hangs. Any ideas? Regards Grandad

Hi all, we have a server that seems to be paging quite a bit. when i look at the performance counters pages/sec shoots up and Available memory falls for 30-60 seconds and then returns to normal. can some one describe what this might mean? thanks N.

Hello, I installed my 2003 TSE server, Acrobat Reader 7 (in mode change user /install). Some users couldn't launch the reader from a webapplication under IE6. These users have a pop (the file is not good - SAVE or CANCEL....). For the others users for the same file, the reader work normaly. Didier

Hi, I have 2 Windows 2008 Servers Ent where some of the core Perfmon counters have gone "missing". Plenty of other counters are there (.NET, Exch2007, etc). But some of the main ones like Processor and PhysicalDisk are not listed anymore. And if you try and enable them via DOS, I get a msg stating they are already enabled. I have tried using Windows 2003 directions regarding repairing corrupt Performance Counters (kb 300956) - but no luck. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

My wife has a Lenovo laptop, running XP pro, which she uses with a "desktop" corded keyboard & mouse when she works in her office. Both are PS/2 devices, connected with this adapter to a USB port: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812101117 Whenever the laptop goes to sleep, the corded mouse ceases to function unless she reboots. Both keyboards continue to function, as does the touchpad mouse on the laptop; only the corded mouse gives up the ghost. A previous cordless USB mouse (now lost) had no such difficulties. Sorry, I'm new to posts. I should have explained my problem better... When I turn on my dell 4500 the computer acts like it is starting, then it goes to a black screen that says: The following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please reinstall the file. Well, after using F8 I can't do anything. I searched the posts and found one that recommended using the XP disk and going to recovery console and using the expand command and then overwriting. I tried that and it said "Access denied". Hi, HP c7438a dat72 not compress when using windows 2003 Server SP2 ntfbackup(compress option is tick), about 40GB will as for next cartridge.i check the device properties , the compress option is ture.i also use HP tools check the driver, compress test result is ok. I am attempting to transfer my address book from my desk top to my laptop. Both are running Window XP. I am working off of directions 'How to back up and to restore Outlook Express data', that I found on a forum. I have done the 'export to a backup folder' on the desktop. In the last three days, my pc has just died while I am working. It can be while on internet, the computer, or e-mail. It just dies and reboots by itself. Only thing I have done recently is downloaded Windows Exployer 8 Beta and upgraded to 2009 Norton. Am using XP oper system. What do you guys think. -- Tracy

On booting I am informed on the screen: "The system could not log on. User name and domain name are correct. Then Type your password again!" I have complied. Failure to sign on. I have changed my password. Nil effect. I have deleted my password and name. Left is the administrator log on. Nil effect. It's a nuisance no more, cause by clicking on the message, the next screen shows administrator box and clicking on it boots-up the PC. I would like to solve the problem though. Thanks! -- Nurmi
