dual boot - NIC fails on XP-32 after loading XP64
by Guest Frolin Marek- 5 replies

Have tried several times to setup a dual boot PC with XP Pro (32bit) and XP Pro 64. New hard drive, setup 50gig partition 'C' and installed XP Pro 32. No issues, loaded, then loaded video and NIC card drivers, upgraded to SP2 and even IE7, all working fine. Then install XP 64 by setting up second partition drive 'D', 30gig. XP64 installs fine and auto configures. When done, can access the net and no issues. And restart and select XP Pro 32 or XP 64, and login, all works ok there. But AFTER the 64 is loaded, the XP Pro 32 can not connect to the Internet. And testing leads me to thing the NIC drivers are now bad for 32 bit. Original instal…

Offline Files Synchronization Failure
by Guest Jim- 0 replies
Hello all, I have a client who is experiencing problems synchronizing a large amount of data (approx 60GB) from a network share using offline files (on Windows XP clients) - effectively the synchronization looks like it has completed, but when disconnecting the PC from the network the majority of the files are not there (and the files are indeed shown as not being synch'd in the Offline Files Folder). The files in question are predominantly word / excel Office documents (i.e. supported file types) so the problem appears to be size related. We have implemented a GPO on the Server (SBS 2003 Std) to ensure that both the 'Default Cache Size' on t…

Script Sentry question
by Guest thanatoid- 1 reply

Having seen Script Sentry mentioned here, I checked into it. It seems like a good alternative to what I have done - removing most of the scripting files from win\sys (with NO ill effects whatsoever I might add). But I did that before I even knew what a firewall etc. was, and anyway, firewalls don't guard you against a browser executing malware. I read about it and DL'd it and it looks like a pretty good piece of software to me. Anyone have much experience with SS? Care to comment? -- Those who cast the votes decide nothing. single executable file to customize Windows XP ?
by Guest anon36- 2 replies

I am a university student and we have to use communal computers. When I log on to any computer, the My Documents folder is there, and it has my files in. But everything else always starts out with some default settings. Anything not stored in My Documents gets deleted when you log off. What I would like to have is a single executable file that customizes Windows (e.g. change to "classic taskbar", change windows and buttons to "Windows classic style", set the background image), changes the Internet Explorer settings to how I like them, and runs several freeware utilities such as PureText and TClockEx. Then every time I log in I could just double-click on this f…

Deleting and the recycle bin
by Guest Jon- 3 replies

If I delete a file from my PC, as expected it goes in the recycle bin. If I delete a file using my PC which is stored on another PC networked to my PC, it doesn't go in my recycle bin or (as far as I can see) the recycle bin of the networked PC. Is there a way to set up the recycle bin on either PC so that these deletions do go in one of the recycle bins?

We have recently upgraded a few dc's to windows 2008, whilst keeping some DCs at 2003. Mostly all member servers are 2003, however we have a few older nt4 machines with data on them. The nt4 servers were migrated years ago from the older domain structure into a single domain in active directory. All has been fine up until recently. The PDC emulator is on a windows 2008 DC now. When logging onto the affected nt4 server/s the user manager for domains shows the main domain, but when you look at local groups, the domain groups which are inside are showing as 'DOMAIN NAME\account unknown'. WINS and DNS entries are the same on all servers which exhibit this issue, …

my friend bought a used computer, which worked fine until her kids got on it and locked her out with a log on password. we got that figured out, she is now able to log on to windows, but now she can't add or remove any programs or even access wireless internet because it says she has to be logged on as administrator and we can't figure out how to change this. we have tried adding a new usse, but this too has to have administrator rights. we don' t know what to do because she doesn't have the money to take it to a repair shop. please, someone help us out here. i need exact directions to be able to do this. HELP, PLEASE!!!!!

Problem Renewing Live OneCare
by Guest Rick- 6 replies

I purchased a copy of Live OneCare rather than renewing online. I followed the installation instructions and it works and updates daily as it should. My problem is I continually get popups telling me to renew. Upon installation completion, it said it may take up to 24 hours for the renewal notice would go away. Unfortunately, that was three weeks ago. What can I do or who can I contact to get this resolved? Thanks, Rick

But given that CD-R discs are almost throw-away cheap and are faster and are more reliable, rather few …
