XP Pro install leads to missing Windows utilities
by Guest davidi- 11 replies

After several problems, I reformatted my HD and installed XP Pro, then installed (after download from Microsoft) SP3 and all other Windows Updates. Then, I reinstalled my apps. Things *seemed* OK. However, I wanted details on my video card and clicked on Start/ Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information; absolutely nothing happened. I then clicked on Start/Help and Support, and got a message that "Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named 'Help and Support'." However, when I tried Start / Run / Services.msc and looked at the list, I found *no* service beginning with "Help"…

Fault Description: Boot sequence halts at F1 -------------------------------------------- Intel Motherboard model D815EEA P3 Socket 370 Operating System: Windows XP SP3 Boot-up halts on first screen with message to "press F1 to continue". After invoking F1, everything goes well, but his happens everytime the system boots. I have scoured the BIOS to identify any settings to disable this: it has none. I have had other motherboards bios with instructions to "Halt on all errors, keyboard etc., but this model hasn't. Checked Intel's site for support and downloaded the Flash Bios which was carried out successfully, but still the F1 halting comes up. Doubled c…

Dropping in a couple new monitors in xp pro
by Guest Mark G.- 3 replies

I have been running my trusty old 21" Sony Trinitron Multiscan G500 for the last 6-7 years. When it came out, it was very high end and even at today's standards, it does well. But this monitor is HUGE! About 100 pounds to boot. Anyhow, got a couple of free monitors from work as they were upgraded. One 19" and one 21". Both LCD's. Would like to go to LCD's now and will run the 19" between 2 computers with a KVM switch. Anyhow, I was double checking the specs between my old Trinitron against the two newer Viewsonic LCD's and while I know they are different technology, it seems that maybe my Trinitron may still out perform the larger Viewsonic that was going …

I can't seem to find a .NET group but may have missed it somehow. If there is one, plz advise according and I'll post to there. I suspected the >net Framework 2.0 installation was not working so I tried to download and reinstall. I prior to uninstalling existing and then after uninstalling existing. Both times I rec'd the following err msg: Setup cannot continue because this version of the .NET Framework is incompatible with a previously installed one. For more info go to .....support/kp/articles/q312/5/00.asp. I went to above link and it provided no help. I have no reference in Add/Remove Programs to any .NET program and am at a stand still. An…

Msconfig question
by Guest spamlet- 9 replies
I am puzzled as to the operation of the configuration utility in XP Pro. When I use it, it appears to offer a range of dialogues for changing system settings, but whenever I change any, it just opens next time, with a message that I should go back to a 'normal' start up. What is the point of having a utility with the settings all in one convenient place, and then making it so that (apparently) changes can only be made on a temporary basis? Is this the way it is meant to work, or am I missing something? Cheers, S

System Restore question...
by Guest Angela- 3 replies

Ok. Here is what happened first of all: I was doing a defrag on my comp.. it was at 37%, I decided to see if this Sonic RecordNow! was the program I needed to use to burn a DVD, so I clicked it to open it and a blue screen with a bunch of white words on it popped up and then shut my computer down. I turned it back on.. it got to the screen where I enter my password.. I entered it. It then acted as if it was going to load windows and I seen my desktop background image but then it would go right back to the password screen.. and no matter how many times I entered my password it would keep doing that. I left my computer off for awhile and tried later, stll…

Computer stops responding
by Guest longhorn- 3 replies

I have been having problems with my computer suddenly stopping responding, or freezing. Ultimately I have to reboot. The error message that is generated upon restart is "STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER". I have followed all of the action dictated in the associated KB article, including replacing my video card. Nothing seems to cure the problem. So I am bringing my problem to the group to see if someone has cured this malady before.

Deleted Folder Keeps Reappearing
by Guest magmike- 7 replies

I have a folder on my desktop that just had two pictures in it, that once no longer needed, I deleted. However, whenever I restart, the folder with pictures inside reappears! I've moved them to other folders, and again - it reappears after a restart. I even deleted the folder with a supposed 'forever eraser' program that supposedly overwrites the data a thousand billion times - but, yes, you guessed it - it still reappears after a restart. Anybody know the cure for this and could explain why this is happening? Thanks in advance! magmike

click-jacking - how many times must you be warned?
by Guest MEB- 8 replies

Well, yet another aspect of what I have presented in this forum has now been addressed. More of the malicious activity we find spreading across the Internet. Click-jacking http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1972&tag=nl.e539 From the article: QUOTE: With this exploit, once you're on the malicious web page, the bad guy can make you click on any link, any button, or anything on the page without you even seeing it happening. [ SEE: Adobe Flash ads launching clipboard hijack attack ] If that's not scary enough, consider than the average end user would have no idea what's going on during a Clickjack attack. Explorer doesn't explore sometimes
by Guest Alpha- 4 replies

Of late, Windows Explorer often takes ages to open up on a Windows XP Pro SP2 notebook. And the Dr Watson bugger comes up and the shell restarts. All updates installed, works perfectly otherwise. Also, one gets the ~another process is accessing the file~ error very often when deleting files. Unlocker takes care of that pretty effectively though. Don't now if related - Windows also takes ages to shut down when the explorer issue occurs - no end-process messages though.. No other error messages. Clear page-file at shut-down is disabled. CHKDSK /F and SFC /scannow run without effect. We would appreciate any insights into what to look for. Regards and TIA. Alpha …

Microsoft extends XP downgrade rights date by six months 1 2

MS knows Vista is crap lol http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1619 Microsoft is sending some very confusing signals about Windows Vista - the latest of which it issued via a statement on October 3. The Register reported on October 2 that Microsoft was going to extend again the date until which PC makers would be allowed to continue to offer Windows users "downgrade rights," enabling them to switch from Vista to XP on new machines. The Reg said Microsoft had moved the downgrade cut-off date from January 31, 2009 to July 31, 2009. I asked Microsoft about the Reg's report and got this statement, via a company spokesperson: "As more customers …

R2

I have never read so many posts and still not be sure of the correct answer. 1. If I have a server 2003 installed before R2 was released, is there an "upgrade" to R2 without buying the whole new product ? 2. If I have server 2003 installed after R2 was released (have the CD2), but exited the install when asked about installing additional features from CD2, can I now make it an R2 ? Just run adprep and setup2 from the CD2 ?? Thanks for clearing this up.
