VPN/Firewall/Remote Access Problem
by Guest Leo Seccia- 1 reply

Hello everyone, I have a bit of a problem. Today for the first time in my life I had to set up one of our servers as VPN/Remote Access. I managed to set it up, but as i only had one NIC I had to go for the "Custom configuration" settings. On the way, I had to disable the Firewall service. I can now connect to the server VPN, however now I would like to restrict access to remote desktop and other apps - eg. I need the firewall to control access. Essentially, I want to: - only allow remote access to the server through the VPN. - have all the convenience of the firewall. Is this possible? Thank you in advance Leo

system drive upgrade possible?
by Guest anthonyx26- 4 replies

I have a fairly new Dell server (2 yo/dual core) but the dummy who originally set it up, split a single 120 GB hard drive into two partitions...one for system (12 GB) and another for data (108 GB). It's configured as a "basic" drive in disk manager. The server is running Windows 2003 and Active Directory. I'm not sos concerned about the data drive as I am about the system drive (as I'm considering upgrading it to Windows 2008). Is there any way to, more or less painlessly, migrate the system drive to a larger hard drive? - anthonxy26

Open With from a command line
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 11 replies

In Explorer, highlighting a particular file and r-clicking it while holding down the Shift key brings up a context menu with an "Open with" option. Is there any way I can automate this via a single command line? I'm thinking of something like this ... some_command.exe /option_1 ... /option_n %1 .... where %1 is the file I wish to open. Would rundll32.exe or explorer.exe have appropriate command line options? - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

Minimizing Web Pages
by Guest Barry Karas- 3 replies

11/Oct/2008 12:01 I am running Windows XP Home with SP3. When I minimize a web page, the notification icon goes to the bottom of my desktop (between the start button and the clock). This web page SHOULD NOT change. However, when I start a new web page (for example, that is on my desktop, or is in an e-mail message) the minimized web page changes to the web page I just started. I want the prior web page to remain. This worked the way I want until about three weeks ago. Then the MINIMIZED web pages changed automatically when a new web page was started. How would I make minimized web pages stay the same until I terminate them? TIA Sincerely, Bar…

After recklessly using a registry cleaner, I can no longer upload files (DSL speed test upload speed = 0). Event viewer shows "upload manager failed to start ID: 7000). Account specified wrong. It looks like my computer name has been removed from some service that is trying to start, but I haven't figured out how to find the name of it. I did a system restore from a safe date, but no joy. Local system network DDE disabled network DDE DSDM disabled remote access auto connection manager disabled (I think this is due to remote access being disabled for security). I do have a drive image from a previous backup s…

WD external drive not playing well
by Guest Joe Starin- 2 replies

Dell laptop, Windows XP Home, one play/burn DVD drive. Have a Western Digital My Book Essential USB 2.0 320GB external drive. Whenever I connect this external drive then power up, I get a black screen and nothing else -- as soon as I disconnect the drive, Windows boots immediately. When I connect the drive AFTER the laptop is running, all processes seem to slow down or stop. Every simple click takes 2 to 3 minutes or the request won't complete at all. Can barely run Belarc Advisor. Can barely view "My Computer." Can barely even switch Web pages. Not a crash but I get a very long hourglass no matter what I do and/or this error message: "The specified…

explorer freezes for ~3 seconds after closing file
by Guest Eric T.- 1 reply

Intermittently (maybe half the time), when I close a file I have opened from the explorer, it freezes for about 3 seconds before letting me do anything again. I doesn't seem to happen with .txt files, but it does happen with ..doc files (where the recovery exactly coincides with the backup file that Word created being deleted), and with .jpg files (which is why I don't suspect something with Word in particular), and maybe others. During this delay, keystrokes I make are lost (e.g. if I hit down arrow to move to the next file, it does not do so when it recovers). It seems that only explorer is frozen. I can switch to another application or bring up the …

Reinstalling Windows XP Home on a Packard Bell laptop
by Guest David- 13 replies

Hi, I needed to replace my HDD on my 4 year old Packard Bell (PB) A7145 laptop. As readers may know PB laptops don't come with Windows XP installation disks but rely on the use of restore disks & a restore partition on the HDD. I no longer have the restore partition so thought that I only needed to reinstall Windows XP and use the product key that came with the original laptop. That didn't work because it looks as though PB use a particular OEM version of Windows. I see that the sticker is marked NEC presumably indicating that it is a special version. My options seen to be: - buy another Windows XP but that will cost more than the laptop is worth, …

Hi all, I have a 64bit Windows 2003 R2 machine. It is an exchange server, and it is starting to run out of space on the C: drive (only 2.6 GB left). Pretty much the only thing that puts files on the C: drive are Windows Updates. I was thinking about making some changes to the swap file to make some room. The server has 32GB of RAM. The swap files are currently setup as follows: C: 2046-4092 MB E: 2046-49149 MB My question is this: What if I change the size of the swap partition on the C: drive to say...300MB? That would give me plenty of room, as the swap file is currently taking up 2.5GB. Is it safe to do this? Any help is appreciated, th…
