Software Compatibility Question (Forced Install)
by Guest Daniel P. Cayea- 1 reply

I have a piece of software I am trying to install on Server 2008. The setup will say that it can only install on Windows 2000, XP, or Vista. Now, even in compatibility mode (right clicking on the setup and telling it to run in a different layer) it tells me that it can only install in 2K, XP, or Vista. What can it be looking at to know the difference even in a compatibility layer? It isn't a system utility, its some test scoring software. Thanks, Dan

I'm running windows 2003 Server on a Dell PE2500. As the server is being used much more as a heavy print server, the system drive keeps running out of space due to a build up of tmp files. Is there a way to change the location of the tmp files from the spooler to another larger drive ?

"My Documents" Folder Duplication
by Guest Bud- 10 replies
Some time in the last 4 or five months (I think) a new folder appeared under My Computer. It's called Buds PC's Documents. It holds all the same folders and files as "My Documents" does. Under properties it shows this folder name to be "My Documents" yet the folder name showing up in Windows Explorer is Buds PC's Documents. If I delete a file in it the file is deletes the same file in "My Documents". Bottomline is I know this folder is a duplication of "My Documents". Whereas I would like to delete it I know if I do I will delete the "My Documents Folder". Can someone tell me where this came from and how to get rid of it?

Always logging in at safe mode help!
by Guest Dennis- 2 replies

I was trying to set the screen resolution in safe mode. First, I ran msconfig (in normal mode) then ticked boot to safemode and then I restart. The problem now is I cannot login. I used to login thru a domain or netmork (e.g. doamin\username). I didnt know that logging in safe mode needs the Admin account, I cant remember my admin account. Is there any possible way to boot into normal mode again? I tried pressing F8, and then choose Normal Mode, but still it went to safe mode again and again! So sad, I feel Im in Danger Mode. Please help! I cannot login and my computer is completely useless now... Many thanks in advance! -- ==========================…

How to distribute a file into Windows system folder?
by Guest John- 2 replies

In response to Adobe Flash Player clickjacking Security Advisory (at http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa08-08.html), I'd like to distribute MMS.CFG file to approximately 50 PCs without manually visiting each one of them. According to Flash Player Admin Guide, the correct location for MMS.CFG file is \Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash Since all of my users don't have permission to add/modify files in the system folder, I'd have to find other ways to do this. My question is: What's the quickest and easiest way to drop MMF.CFG file into everyone's PC at this location: \Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash? Btw, the OS is WinXP with SP3 and…

How to copy fast to 1TB hard drive
by Guest Andrew- 1 reply

I’ve just purchased a 1TB Buffalo Turbo external hard drive. Problem: my Seagate 320GB external hard drive has only about 20% free space left. Is it possible to have these 2 drives on at the same time and transfer direct from the Seagate EHD to the Buffalo EHD and so reduce the transfer time considerably? Both supplied FAT 32 formatted and are still so. Running XP Home SP3. Thanks - Andy

As a security measure, a couple of years ago I mislabeled a few graphic and video files with an erroneous filename and a .doc extension. Since then, of course, I lost more neurons than anticipated and can no longer locate them. Is there an easier way than going through all .doc files one by one? Thanks,

Automate Login to TS from RDP
by Guest ponga- 3 replies

Hey gang, I just got tasked to login to 100+ XP boxes via RDP - so I am searching for a way to ease the pain, so far no luck. At first I was looking for a way to make a connectoid that stores the un/pass (they are all the same) - but the XP boxes are set to disallow such a thing in GP. So, my next though was just to find a way that I can Ctrl- V the password in so I don't have to type it everytime, but simply cannot find a way to do it. I've tried so-called keystroke emulators, etc - but nothing works. Any tips would be much appreciated here, Thanks!! -ponga

User Profile hangs
by Guest td- 7 replies

I have a user that when he logs onto our TS 2003 box it hangs at loading your personal settings. He did not have any issues in the past. This has just started happening. I was going to rename his current profile and let him log on and then I would just copy over what he needed from his old profile to the new one but.....when I try to rename the old profile it says Access is denied. Make sure disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not in use. I am assuming that there is a file within this profile that is locked or hung by the system. Is there anyway to unlock it without restarting the server? IS there anyway to see what file is locked in t…

Last update, boots to username screen now!
by Guest Doug Warner- 2 replies

XP Pro, SP3, Since the last automatic update, my system now boots to the "click your username" screen instead of coming all the way up now. I used to be able to turn it on, walk away, and it was completely booted when I returned. Now, I have to click my username, and wait another 1-2 minutes while all the user-specific stuff loads. How do I disable this "feature" so I can get my unattended full boot back? -- Email reply: please remove one letter from each side of "@" Spammers are Scammers. Exterminate them.

Removing Multiple Users

I had a single-user system. Attempts to reinstall an Adobe program were unsuccessful, so the Adobe rep assisted the Dell rep in taking control of my machine remotely and creating a new user, then installing the program the program under the new user. The program is available to me as the original user also. I'd like to remove the new user and return to a single-user configuration, but I'm wondering what will happen to the reinstalled program. Will it still be available? What other results might happen by removing the second user? Bobbi

I've been through this Winlogon Notification Packages thing and managed to produce interesting results. I have an application that must be launched as soon the user logs in. It's a legal thing and user must accept (interact through a button) the presented time-entry to logon continues. The application waits the user interaction for 30 seconds and then continues. I've got it up an running through WLX_NOTIFICATION_INFO Logon event, placed a lot of loggers inside both notification DLL and my application and can assure both execute smoothly. The problem is …

Exceeding 85% Disk Quotas Report Header
by Guest Scott- 0 replies

On Server 2003 R2 SP2 we are running disk quotas with warnings to users at 85%. The email warnings which are sent to users are very confusing because, rather than having a header that emphasizes that they are approaching their quota, the report has the following header and subject: Duplicate Files Report Generated in response to a quota 85% threshold exceeded notification on 'E:\Users\Jonesj'. Generated at: 10/9/2008 10:40:51 AM Report Description: Lists files that appear to be duplicates (files with same name, size and last modified time). Use this report to quickly identify and reclaim disk space wasted because of duplication. Is there any way to mo…

Win98 to 2000
by Guest Cottonmouth- 10 replies

I've been using W98 for years without problems, but it's getting so there's too many things I can't use/access with W98. My sister has offered me Win2000 so to bring me out of the dark ages. The questions I have are; is W2000 a memory hog(384meg); would it be better to make it dual bootable with W98 so if I had problems I'd still be able to fall back on W98? Are all the patches readily available for download or on CD? It's been a long, long time since I've upgraded and I'm a little nervous about jumping into it. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Disable the homepage from auto appearing as desktop when active desktop is enabled?

Sorry this is multiposted in public.win2000.general - not a busy forum so I've posted here also (apologies in advance) Hello I have numerous desktops running windows XP who's users have a policy puching out corporate wallpaper, which requires active desktop to be enabled. The same users logon to a Win2k terminal server, and active desktop (with it being enabled for the user account) gives every user the homepage when they logon. Is it possible to have this feature disabled? I think it must be in the default user profile somehow but unsure, can someone help? Thanks
