2008 server: repair boot environment - how?
by Guest Alwin- 6 replies

Hi all, I admit, I messed up a quite important server. Originally it was Windows 2008, for some testing / cloned its system partition (Norton Ghost) and installed Windows 2003. Some time later I restored Windws 2008 over 2003, and since then the server does not boot any more. Strange: if I insert any OS CD (tried some: 2003 Server, 2000 Server, even XP ...) and boot, the server boots the CD, displays the normal "Press any key to boot from the CD" prompt, and if I do *not* press any key it will after some time skip the CD boot and - boot Windows 2008 server from the Harddisk. I'd prefer it to boot without the helping CD, of course :-) Questions: * wha…

Unix fileshareing - which exact version of Server 2003?
by Guest justmark- 1 reply

I'd like to retire one of my old Redhat servers (used only as a fileserver) by keeping my old Unix files on a new Windows 2003 server. I see that R2 is supposed to allow this, but I seem to be missing something in the translation here. Is this available with the 32-bit standard version and if not, which version(s) will do this? Thanks!

This situation occurs with both IE and Firefox. My OS is Vista Ultimate 64 bit, patch1. I am using Vista Mail. When I am on the Web and I select a e-mail link, I am not getting a new email box. I do have my Windows Mail Inbox come to the screen, but a New Mail box with the address filled in, from the web site, as expected is not happening. I have been through "Set Default Programs" and Windows Mail is selected as my default. It certainly is possible that there is something in: Associate a file type or protocol with a program" or Set program access and computer defaults" that I am missing. But, when I click on a Web Link to email, The Windows (or…

Set default problem

I have a problem setting my e-mail default program to Turnpike on Vista ultimate 64 bit. Turnpike is set as my e-mail link in customize start menu. I have tried running the program default setup, but I can't find turnpike in the list of available programs. I reply yes to set turnpike as default e-mail, news and address book as turnpike starts but every time I open turnpike I have to reset it as default. I have tried setting turnpike up in default programs but it is not listed and I can't find away to add it to the list of programs. Any help would be appreciated. T.I.A. -- John

Permissions required to restart services
by Guest susan- 2 replies

I have a situation in which I want a couple users to be able to do these things (on a WIndows 2003 server): Log on remotely and restart 2 specific services The remote logon works, but I can't figure out how to grant them permissions to restart selected services. (If I make them members of the local Power Users group, they can restart the services, but I don't really want them to have all the other "rights" that go along with being a Power User.) Thanks

Vista vs XP Machine Purchase
by Guest Watty- 11 replies

I'm told that some mfgers will sell quad core PCs with Vista, but provide a way to replace it with XP (Pro, I hope). If so, which mfgers provide machines that are able to get back to XP? In general, I've heard that most (maybe) new PCs with Vista probably cannot be reset to XP--possible hardware-driver conflicts. Further, MS is putting together a new OS that will supersede Vista in a few years. Comments?

Strange printing issue with redirected printer

Hello, a few days ago, a strange printing issue occured at our site. We have an employee, who works on a WinXP Pro SP2 Workstation with a HP Color LaserJet 2550 attached via USB. She is connected to a Windows Server 2003 via mstsc 6.0.6000. Until the error occured, she could print. But since a few days ago, it is impossible to print from within the terminal session. We reinstalled the drivers, and the printer appears in the session, but it ist even impossible to print a testing site from the printer dialog. The dialog only says, that it is impossible to print. We also tested the registry hack, described in KB302361. Who could help me? Thanks, Andreas

I need Windows XP Pro to run a certain application, but I need to buy a legitimate, full license (not upgrade) to get my machine ready to run it. I see OEM licenses available for sale but doubt that I'm allowed to use them. Is it too late to buy a valid license? Thanks for any thoughts.

i have xp pro sp3. the current-user my documents is missing in my computer for all the limited accounts. they do appear properly for the administrators, however. if i change the limited accounts to administrator status, then all the users' documents show up. if i add a new limited account, no my documents appear. i have found several articles discussing this, or something similar, but they don't seem to help. i have tried: looking at docfolderpaths kathy's korner tweakui (the option to show them doesn't appear when i'm logged on as a limited account but is there for an administrator) there's another thing to fix, too, but i don't know if it is …

Transferring data from EHD to EHD direct?
by Guest Andrew- 0 replies

I’ve just purchased a 1TB Buffalo Turbo external hard drive. Problem: my Seagate 320GB external hard drive has only about 20% free space left. Is it possible to have these 2 drives on at the same time and transfer direct from the Seagate EHD to the Buffalo EHD and so reduce the transfer time considerably? Both supplied FAT 32 formatted and are still so. Running XP Home SP3. Thanks - Andy

I have a client that is using Windows XP Pro SP3. His laptop is joined to a Windows SBS 2003 domain. He uses offline files to access files when he takes his laptop out of the office. He is synchronizing his Mapped "S" drive. All but three folders are synchronizing. When I try to sync the folders, I receive an error that says: "Offline Files (\\server1\Shared on Server1): Unable to make 'Caldwell, Christopher' available offline on \\server1\shared\customer\A_C\C. The system is currently running with the last-known good configuration" I have tried recreating the Share at the server and remapping the mapped drive. I have also tried deleting the offline…

Hi, I bought a computer second-hand from a nice young man. He set it up for me and it has worked absolutely perfectly for three years, there have been no problems, hardware or software, that I haven't been able to fix myself. I started it this morning to be greeted with the message: 'Windows Product Activation. Your Windows product must be activated within 7 days. Do you want to activate Windows now?' I clicked NO since I wanted to check. What I have is Windows XP and I have already found a link that seems to diagnose the problem, on the Microsoft site.... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312295/en-us So I have downloaded a thingy.exe called Guided Help, …

HP ScanJet 8250 Incongruence
by Guest Bob Frolek- 2 replies

At location A I use SJ4850. At location B I use SJ8250. I use the same laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000) at both locations. This system has worked well in the past. I’m now at location B. Suppose I scan a fully printed A4 sheet. I see an A4 image, but the printed sheet has been “pushed” to the right and upwards, lopping part of it off, while leaving corresponding blank space at the left and the bottom. Have tried reinstalling the HP drivers to no effect. The defect seems to be at the HP end as four different software scanning programs give the same result. Is there a way of regaining congruence? Is SJ8250 dying?

Print spooler crash on startup - Help
by Guest szeik@hotmail.com- 0 replies

Hi, I was printing something from a program called Guitar Pro and the program crashed in the middle of the job. After that I could not print at all so I rebooted. Now every time I reboot the print spooler crashes during start up so I can't even see the printer to try and delete the job and I can't add a new printer because it tells me the print spooler service is not running. It seems like that corrupt job is stuck in the queue somehow but I can't even see the printer to delete it. Would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this. Thanks in advance, Steve

Disentangling network set up

A friend was given a laptop which had previously been connected to a local network. It still has network domains and the previous user's login. We cannot access the 'My Documents' folder since the setup assumes we must be connected. Is there any way I can 'un-network' the various settings and establish the laptop as a standalone, unconnected PC? I am not a networking expert and did not want to change/delete anything for fear of messing things up.
