Usb drive faster than internal drive?
by Guest spamlet- 4 replies

Browsing through the thread on Fat32 vs NTFS for back up, I am reminded to ask about the unexpected 'bonus' I got when I bought a couple of MyBook 500gig usb drives for back up. In the first place I was a bit miffed to find there were no on/off buttons and only one type of input connection permitted at the back - USB - when I had expected there would be ethernet and firewire type connections possible too. I think I would go for the 'world edition' next time. Secondly, I had been led to believe that drives connected by usb would be slower than internal drives; and, indeed, some people have advised imaging the internal drive and then replacing it with o…

w2k3 Server Home directory duplication
by Guest Sarconastic- 0 replies

I have 2 sites each running Win 2k3 Server with a common active directory using a VPN tunnel on our firewall to connect the two sites. At site one we have an external VPN server setup to allow our remote locations to log in and access Docs etc. At each site we have the users home folders for that site setup up in a data folder at that location. An example is Site 1 User A, B, and C each have a home folder under \\server1\data\A etc - Site 2 User D, E and F, have a home folder under \\server2\data\D etc. We didn't want to sync all the home folders bwteen the sites to save space on our servers. The problem I have is that a half dozen or so users travel back an…

Hi. Can anyone point me to a good source of information that describes the Windows printing architecture in detail, how all the components fit together and interact, and what the interfaces between them are? I'm interested in: - Any libraries an application that prints uses - GDI - The spooler - Print providers - Printer drivers, including universal printer drivers - Port/language monitors - Local vs remote printing - EMF vs XPS I have an article from The Code Project and Brian Madden's guide to Terminal Services printing. Thanks.

periodic desktop icons moving?

From time to time, the icons on my desktop rearrange, all to the left. I do not have auto arrange icons set. I have Ez-desk, so it's not a major problem to put them back where I want them, but it _is_ irritating. It seems to come and go in phases, and I've had it on at least two machines. At the moment, I can't remember when it last happened on this laptop; on my desktop machine, it tends to happen at least once per session, within about ten or twenty minutes of booting. Any idea what's causing it? -- J. P. Gilliver. UMRA: 1960/<1985 MB++G.5AL(+++)IS-P--Ch+(p)Ar+T[?]H+Sh0!:`)DNAf ** http://www.soft255.demon.co.uk/G6JPG-PC/JPGminPC.htm for thought…

Folder view settings revisited - again
by Guest Alpha- 2 replies

One computer is driving its user nuts - it will simply not retain folder view settings in Explorer. All the usual methods have been employed - TweakUI, Views tab on Folder Options, Save User settings tweak from Kelly's Korner, and deletion of Bags and BagsMRU keys in the ShellNoRoam section of the registry. Nothing seems to work. Only thing we found was that the deleted registry keys would be regenerated at boot - and then opening Explorer it is found that the view has reverted to Tiles and sorted By Name which the user does not want! This started last week on a fully updated Windows XP Pro SP2 machine but no system settings modified in months. Inexplicably seem…

System Error When Leaving Hibernate
by Guest Simon- 9 replies
I run XP Home SP3 and IE7 and AVG 8. Almost every time the PC wakes from Hibernate a 7011 error is created as follows: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7011 Date: 05/10/2008 Time: 15:06:07 User: N/A Computer: XXX Description: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service. I have spent many hours googling this - it seems quite a common occurrence but no-one seems to know how to stop it and/or whether it can be safely ignored. Any thoughts, please?

I have used this software successfully once before. Recently though the system is hanging once it reaches the authoring stage. It seems to hang a lot, even while trying to close it and doesn't respond. I have tried reinstalling it and repairing it and even getting rid of programmes I no longer use in case of conflict. The project is 1.42 GB so not too big for DVD. It came bundled with digital videocam software. I can't access their website for a number of reasons. Anyone help me please?

Terminal Services Won't Start ... all of a sudden
by Guest Tom- 1 reply

Hi, WinXPSP2 install, updated with everything but SP3. As of two days ago, will no longer accept RDP sessions. All is well in the land of the check boxes, firewall etc. So I went to services.msc to see if I can start Terminal Services manually and get the following error: Could not start.....Error 126: The specified module could not be found. Also, when looking at my backups, I started to get errors where my backup program can't backup certain files because of access denied errors due to file attribute changes. I ran a rootkit scan and NAV / AVG scans and come up with nothing. Any ideas?

Abnormal Disk Image?
by Guest Watty- 2 replies

Continuing my story from "Foiled Again?". A quick review. My 80G drive apparently failed. A shop got the contents to an external drive I gave them. I installed XP on a new 320G drive, and then used unstoppable copier to it. I think this is an image copier. I was able to fire up XP on the 320G drive, but it was obvious some programs were not working properly. The most frequent msg on them was something about DLLs. Supposedly, the point of installing XP and onto the the new drive was to produce an MBR. I just talked to WDC, and they said an image copy should have done the trick. There was no need to make a MBR. Either way, that leaves some mysteries. BTW…

Server 2008 TS RemoteApp Maximum Number of Users
by Guest Andy DeAngelis- 2 replies
Good morning. I am currently in the process of developing an infrastructure solution to publish Internet Explorer via RemoteApp to over 600 different locations, averaging around 5 end users per location (for a grand total of 3000 end users). The reason I am doing this is that my client uses a web application that is critical for their day to day business, but only has on average a 128kb frame connection (some connections as low as 56kb dial up!) from the remote locations to the datacenter, with 64kb dedicated to VoIP. This frame connection also is used for email, internet, etc. My thought process is to publish Internet Explorer through TS RemoteApp. …

I am confused I have ran the SFC(system file checker ) in an attempt to replace some missing DLL files noted. It says "insert the Windows Xp Pro SP3"? I have had this computer for over 1.5 years and it didn't come with an XP Pro disc, only restore disc, which I do not want to use. System Restore does not help. I have downloaded and installed SP3 and still have missing files. I have downloaded SP3 and saved to a CD, an attempted to use it with the file checker but it will not accept it."wrong CD inserted" Computer is a dual core AMD 2.6 GHZ, 4GB ram, 300GB HD SATA, 250GB HD IDE. I have no other problems except getting WMP to recognize my drives.. The IDE …

RIS Error 00004e44 - WePOS Image
by Guest Jeff Clegg- 0 replies

Hi there. I'm trying to get a WePOS (Windows Embedded Point of Service) RiPrep image to deploy via RIS. Unfortunately after I log into the Client Installation Wizard and choose my RiPrep Image I get Error 00004e44 - which leads me to KB262801 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262801). I do have WePOS RiSetup image on the RIS box. One of the bullet points in KB262801 mentions an NTOSKRNL.exe hotfix, which we have applied since the WePOS 1.1 version does not ship with a version of NTOSKRNL.exe (The step by step guide at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms911830.aspx says to install http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814199 on page 2). I have tr…

Multiple users and XP Files and settings transfer wizard

I am planning to construct a new PC build and will be reinstalling XP from scratch - it was starting to lag a bit anyway! I thought I would try out the Files And Settings Tranfer Wizard to see how good it was, but it raised a question. My PC currently has 3 users. Does the wizard have to be run from each user's account, or does it only need to be done the once. I have looked on the web, but have not been able to find an answer yet. Please advise. Martin

Using Windows 2003. I'm trying to remove some files to free up some space. I see a large file called wrapper.log in the windows\ssl\logs folder. Can I remove this file or at least edit it and remove a lot of it? There are also a lot of files with drftpd.log. and the date (i.e. drftpd.log.2008-05-04). Is it safe to remove these? Thanks, -- Dan D.

Folder Redirection of Start Menu on Win 2003 not happening

I've put together a new Win 2003 TS and have just configured Folder Redirection for a Start Menu. On my TS, I created a folder on the D: drive called TSmenu and copied the shortcuts for Word 2007 and Outlook 2007 from the All Users profile. I configured the Start Menu setting as "Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location". The Target folder location is set to "Redirect to the following location" and the Root Path is \\myserver\TSmenu, which is shared with the share defaults. When I login with a test user account, nothing changes, when I click Programs is still see IE, Outlook Express, Remote Assistance, Accessories and Startup. No trace o…
