win2k3 sbs. Printing worked fine until reboot yesterday. On the server console: When I print from application/test page, everything works fine. When I try "dir > \\servername\printername" I get an error "The parameter is incorrect." I tried "print /d:\\servername\printername c:\testfile" and get "Unable to initialize device \\servername\printername" I try from a client PC, works fine. It's like the server isn't allowed to print, but clients are. How can I test/fix...what parameters could be incorrect?

Compaq laptop

My daughter's significant other owns a 2006 Compaq laptop with an AMD 64 Turion. He has a lot of business files on it. Its running XP with SP2. It has a problem that I suspect is hardware, but may be the OS reacting somehow as well. It may be significant as well to say that it has Norton Internet Security and AV loaded version 2006. No Norton updates were ever done. May be significant as well to say that this laptop has always been slow as molasses running local apps, and accessing the internet. That's the least of their worries now. Presently, the laptop may turn off entirely without warning anywhere from a few minutes use to many hours of use. N…

Troubles with Explorer->Search
by Guest jimM- 1 reply

Greetings, I've recently noticed that the Explorer right-click search doesn't work correctly. Maybe this is well known, but it's the first time I've noticed this. For example, use a "temporary" folder somewhere and create 2 text files and change their extension to '.aaa'. Note that the extension cannot be '.txt' or the problem isn't seen. Name the files something like test_1 and test_2 and keep the '.aaa' extension. Open each file in notepad and add some text, I used '111' and '222' in each file respectively. Then go to the temporary folder and initiate a search. Make your first search "*.aaa". And both files will be found. Then search again using the …

MESSED UP - NEED HELP

I have a Sony Vaio laptop - two years old. It came with XP but a few weeks later, they sent a VISTA upgrade disk. I just tried to instal VISTA. What a disaster! It turns out that the Vaio just doesn't have the memory or processor speed to run VISTA properly. I need to go back to XP. However, Sony never supplied XP disks and I never made a recovery backup. The recovery section on the hard drive now belongs to VISTA. I can download the original drivers from Sony's web site. But where do I get a copy of XP? I have the original Microsoft installation number taped onto the computer that, I assume, will work with any real copy of XP. Thoughts, pl…

Installing dual boot xpPro after crash
by Guest westpase-he_ac@hotmail.com- 2 replies

I'm at a loss, I had a crash where program froze and I tried to close the program by clicking the "X" in the upper right corner. Got a blue screen box that closed before I could read it. All attempts of restarting go though a screen stating Windows failed to start properly, would I like to try in Safe Mode, etc. None have worked, I tried the installation disc, ran chkdsk from the command prompt, fixed something, but still no clean boot. I put in the install disc again, it found another version of windows and asked if I wanted to creat a dual boot partition. I stopped at that point. I really would like to recover some files off this machine and am concerned that…

posted this in the xp hardware group but got no response. . thought i would try here, , , hello, i made the mistake of downloading a registry scanner called "registry booster" by Uniblue turned out you had to "register" to get the full version. . but in the meantime it caused something to happen to my 4 port 2.0 usb hub. . (internal). . did two system restores to no avail. device manager says the ports are working . .when i plug in a device i get the message "device not recognized" but when i plug it into one of the front usb ports, the slower ones, it works fine. . .any suggestions? Start Windows Installer Service in debug mode
by Guest KDawg44- 1 reply

Hi, I am getting an errror in the event log, event ID 11708: Product Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers -- Installation failed. To make sure it isn't the windows installer service, I successfully installed and uninstalled another application. However, I cannot figure out what is causing this error, and since this is run from within Symantec Backup Exec, I am not sure which installer is trying to run. Is there a way to add an option to the Windows Installer service like - debug to set the service in debug mode, attempt the install, and then retrieve to log to find out why this is occurring? Thanks. Kevin

I know you are good with command line switches and stuff. Help me out here. Ok, I have gone through this before and it is time to rehash it. I hibernate my laptop every night using Shutter.exe. http://www.den4b.com/screenshots.php?project=Shutter and it works fine. By that I mean, not only does it hibernate my laptop at the scheduled time but it also allows my scheduled wake-up tasks to run, which Rundll.exe,powrprof.dll SetSuspendState did not do. It has in its parameters one that if true will DisableWakeEvent. So ,what I need is one of you experts here to tell me exactly what to type in my Scheduled Tasks Run box when setting up the task. If you would look a…

Moving Ahead -- Partitions and Laying Down the Old Install
by Guest Watty- 1 reply

OK, the reformat problem was solved. See my post in the other chain on this--Very Slow. Unfortunately, I did not partition the drive. I had hoped I could do that after the reformat--too far along in the format check to back out. Is it possible to do this now? Here's where I'm headed. I'm going to lay down a 80G installation on this new large 320G drive of the installation as it was before the 80G drive holding it died. I recovered all files on the 80G. I'm going to use unstoppable copier to do that. I would think I would put that in partition 1 if I make 3 partitions here. BTW, I'm now up to 7% while waiting for WD to answer their 30 day free install…

Suddenly, every time I try to extrtact files from a zipped folder either with windows xp or with winzip, Windows Explorer shuts down. I have sent the data to MS but not gotten anything back on it. I have clicked the debug option which seems to make something happen, but onlyh the text files get extracted. I have tried this on files from many different sources but still no luck. Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks.

We have locked down our workstations (Hide c:, no cmd, no regedit,) and My documents redirected to the users home. In server 2008 and terminal services all these are ignored. What is the best way to get this done. We would like to see the same lockdown and folder redirection done by our DC's for our XP pro clients translate into TS/s on 2008. Lots of problems for example in 2008 there is no "My Documets" just Username. Kent

Why has Recycled folder gone! on XP
by Guest LPS-AU- 0 replies

After a bulk delete of large number of (Retrospect Backup) files from the Recycle Bin, I noticed that the Recycled folder on each of my drive partitions, has 'disappeared. Using Windows Explorer the only 'Recycle' entry showing in the tree view is one entry for Recycle Bin at the end of the tree view. The Recycle Bin icon is still on the Desktop and a test delete of a file caused it to go to the Recycled Bin. I have checked with another PC and each of the drives has a Recycled folder showing in alphabetic sequence. Grateful for any advice on what to do. Peter. ********

I installed XP Pro on a new 320G HD last week, and need to do it again. However, after 30 minutes it's gotten to the 4% mark. It took less than an hour last week. What's up? Should I kill it? Maybe I should have used the quick format available in install.

Hi there, I'd be really grateful if someone could have a quick read of my problem! My Exchange server is causing problems. 2-3 times a day, all outgoing emails are bouncing with SMTP errors - Example: There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <exchange.xxxx.local #5.5.0 smtp;550 <emailaddress@gmail.com>... Relaying denied> I am on a BT Business ADSL line and using a standard BT SMTP server which has always worked fine. I've checked at BT and it's working fine too. Rebooting my Exchange server resolves the problem but only for a few hours. Incidentall…
