PROBLEMS with virus riddled laptop
by Guest Richard- 13 replies

A colleague of mine made the mistake of letting his secretary stick her memory stick into his laptop's USB port. Totally shagged! So I managed to get it to connect to the internet again, installed the latest version of AVG Internet Security, BUT ..... some major problems remain. Please do NOT answer, unless you have a known solution .... I do NOT want "have you tried...." or "I think this may help...." type responses. Many thanks in advance for your understanding this. FYI, the lapton is running XP sp 2. The problems left are:- 1. Clicking on drive name (or even right clicking) does not open/explore the drive . Instead I get the "Open with" wind…

I looked . at it and I got confused on what way to select where it goes after it is completed. Can someone guide me through the tech stuff so after I make back up where and how to get it on my external hard drive. I was also told by Dell that I really do not need a complete back up, I am confused. I just want to be safe, that is why Iought an external hard drive .

Manual Policy Updates
by Guest Kryten- 2 replies

Hi, Windows 2003 Server SP2 When I make a change to the domain policy I notice that my two member servers don't seem to reflect the update in their local security policy until I reboot them. Then the LSP settings show the new values. I try running gpupdate /force from the cmd line on these boxes but no joy. Also I have a number of servers that are standalone, is there any way to refresh their local security policy after modifying it without rebooting? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Stuart

Hackers are here. Where are you???

Hi Greetings!!! Hackers are on move stop them before they enter your network. Beat hackers at their own game attend our training and excel in hacking and its counter measures. If you want to stop hackers from invading your network, first you've got to invade their minds. Computers around the world are systematically being victimized by rampant hacking. This hacking is not only widespread, but is being executed so flawlessly that the attackers compromise a system, steal everything of value and completely erase their tracks within 20 minutes. The goal of the ethical hacker is to help the organization take preemptive measures against malicious attacks b…

Keyboard Mystery
by Guest Blake Kaos- 23 replies

I have an IBM laptop running XP Pro, where the keyboard does not seem to work (in regular windows mode) - no key works at all. However, when I go to Device Manager, the keyboard does not report any errors; when I run PC-Doctor (which is a part of the supplied IBM diagnostics) it reports no errors and indeed the keyboard works just fine for navigation and option selection. In fact, when the laptop boots up, it requires a log-in password and the keyboard works perfectly to enter the password. This leads me to think that keyboard per se is not defective. Once it has booted however, the keyboard becomes totally non-responsive. What could be wrong and how …

Finding Domain Service Running Every 12 Hours
by Guest Smurfman- 3 replies

I am trying to find out what domain service is running at 12:06 am and 12:06 pm everyday and is using my domain admin account to login/run. (Windows 2003 AD domain with 2 DCs) I am now being alerted that at these times the account is being locked out, but as a domain admin it really isn't locked out. I thought a replication service but went into AD and was able to replicate between my two DC's. Not sure where to look for this? THanks J

Granting IIS Rights to Power Users?
by Guest Jason Heydasch- 1 reply

Is there a way to enable "Power Users" in Windows XP to be able to view the default Web site properties in IIS? I can login, as "administrator," to my Webmaster's IIS console on his PC and view the default Web site properties just fine. However, when he logs in as himself, he can open IIS but he can't even see the default Web site's properties. Is there a way to enable him to view this without making him an administrator on the computer?

File copy operations and performance problems?
by Guest Edgeman- 0 replies

Hello, I am running on x64 XP with 8 GB of RAM. I have issues copying or moving large files, either from drive to drive or over the network. When this happens my RAM is slowly eaten away until there is none left and the system starts aggressively paging. I googled and found this: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29912456/file-copy-operations-and.aspx Which is the same problem, so I know I am not alone. I'm just wondering if A: anyone else on here has experienced this, and B: if there is a solution at all? I should note that neither task manager nor process explorer show my RAM as being full when copying a file, but I have a little system…

Shortcut to a UNC path or network drive letter over WAN connection
by Guest MattNeedsHelpPlease- 1 reply

So, we have a number of remote offices that currently map a drive back to the main office server over slower WAN links (2-3Mbit or less). It is a fact that the CIFS protocol does not work well over a WAN connection and mapping drives uses network overhead. So we could use a shortcut on the users desktop to the UNC path i.e. \\servername\share. My question is: Is it better for network purposes to use a shortcut to a UNC path or a mapped drive?

HI there, I have a windows XP Pro machine with 4 shares and 8 PCs with windows 2000 Pro having the shares mapped to them, using 4 windows login accounts on a LAN and domain. These machines are on a remote subnet with lower speed links to where the domain controllers reside. 1. I am getting "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as this computer can accept" on XP sharing machine. 2. On the Windows 2000 Pro client machines I am getting Microsoft Windows network: The local device name is already in use. I am using XP SP3.0 and I performed a Search, but then could not find in Windows Explorer all of the items listed in the Search. I already "Show hidden files and folders" in all folders. I am the Owner and Administrator of this computer. How can I find and delete these files? In addition, I cannot delete some files from a program I no longer subscribe to/use. I get the error, "Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." How can I delete these?
