DFS errors on configuring replication
by Guest Geoff Lane- 8 replies

I've got two servers: Server1 is a recently rebuilt Win2k3 Standard R2 that was previously Win2k3 Standard. The rebuild was because VSS stopped working. Server2 is Win2k Server SP4. Both servers are DCs with Server1 holding all FSMO roles. For the rebuild, I transfered FSMO roles to Server2 then demoted Server1 before reformatting and installing the new OS. Once rebuilt, I tried unsuccesfully to promote Server1 to a DC and subsequently had to use ADSIEdit to clean up the AD before rebuilding again and then successfully promoting Server1, which now also holds the FSMO roles. Mindful of the advice in DFS Help, I've done all the configuration of DFS from…

I am trying to run \\server\connectcomputer on a node running Windows XP Professional. Everytime I run it a message comes "The selected computer is already a member of this domain. There is no need to run the Small Business Server Network Configuration Wizard again" I have tried all of the following methods without success: 1. Deleting the computer from the Active Directory computer listing. 2. Disabling the computer from the Active Directory computer listing. 3. Removing the computer from the network of Standard Management -> Client Computers. 4. Changing the computer connection to a workgroup and then back to Domain. 5. Rebooting the …

Event viewer: "The server's call to a system service failed unexpectedly"
by Guest news.microsoft.com- 3 replies

Hi all, I have a seemingly untraceable issue on a Windows 2003 server -- every few seconds, an entry is being written into the system event log that reads: Source: Srv Event ID: 2000 Category: None Description: The server's call to a system service failed unexpectedly Data: 0000: 00040000 00540001 00000000 c00007d0 0010: 00000000 c000010a 00000000 00000000 0020: 00000000 00000000 00bd0334 My event log only goes back to the start of today, but there's 87000 entries exactly like this. So it's becoming rather a nuisance. Now I've done a lot of googling on this, but it seems to be unresolved; EventID.net doesn't list it in it's summary[1] and comments. H…

office file browser broken
by Guest Fredrated- 1 reply

When I take the file>open option for MS Office applications and try to navigate to an existing office file, the file browser takes 3 to 4 minutes to display a folder and file list. Then if I click on a drive letter or folder, it takes another 3 to 4 minutes to display the new list. Nothing seems to be cached, every click takes this long. Also, it is using a lot of cycles because other applications hang while the new list is being generated. Any ideas what is going on, or better, how to stop this behavior? I think this started after a recent windows update, but I am not sure. I am using XP service pack 2 and Office XP. Some Office apps are SP2, some…

First off, I'm using XP Home SP3, fully patched and up to date. This is strange. I keep getting a system event that tells me the following: _______________________________________________________________ Event ID: 7023 Description: The Human Interface Device Access service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. _______________________________________________________________ If I try to manually start the service by going into the Services administrative tool, I get the following error message: _______________________________________________________________ Services --------------------------- Could not start th…

How to disable drwatson?
by Guest LuDean Marvin- 5 replies

For trouble shooting purposes, I would like to disable DrWatson. Each time Windows Explorer crashes, it runs and it too crashes. I am then forced to Alt-Ctrl-Del, and close down the crashed programs before I can resume work. Is there anyway I can do this? If I should choose to keep it disabled, what would the consequences be?

A disc read error occurred
by Guest Peter Phillips- 3 replies

My anti-virus subscription ran out. I had been going to change the program (Panda) anyway because they've stopped catering for W2K. I went for Sophos. I uninstalled Panda then - stupidly forgetting I hadn't immediately rebooted - I installed Sophos. A restart produced: Verifying DMI Pool Data Boot from CD: Boot from CD: A disc read error occurred Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart That's as far as it will go.I don't even have access to my second W2K emergency installation on HD5. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks

Hi, When browsing to servers via UNC, the "Scheduled Tasks" share does not show up anymore. It used to show up, but now the window is just blank when browsing to \\<servername>. I am a member of the Local Administrators group, I have administrative privileges on the servers. When connecting to this server by Remote Desktop and by opening a windows explorer with \\<servername>, I can see the Scheduled Tasks share listed. Moreover when I am running a schtasks command from my computer on this server: schtasks /query /s <servername> I am getting a: Error: Access is Denied. But if run locally, it works fine and lists the scheduled jobs.…

I have W-98 in my secondary PC. However, W-98 does not support recent jump (pen) drives, thus I am plannig upgrade to Wxp. Have boxed Wxp upgrade version but instructions indicate that the upgrade will "replace" previous OS. I have several important W-98 program that will like to keep, but they will not work properly under Wxp. Thus, will like to keep W-98 as an alternative OS. Q: How can I installe Wxp and keep W-98 to be used when needed??

Print Spooler takes a large percentage of CPU time.
by Guest davidtheweb- 0 replies

I have a recurring issue with a Print Spooler on a Windows 2000 Server. A print job will get stuck and take a large amount of the CPU time. I stop the print spooler in Services, go into Windows (or Winnt) | System32 | Spool | Printers and delete all jobs in that folder and restart the print spooler. This fixes the issue temporarily, but several days later, the same process occurs. Is there a way to trace where the stuck print job is coming from, or has anyone run into this same issue? Thanks, David

Defrag and Cpacity mystery
by Guest Entelechy- 4 replies

A few months ago when I ran defrag I got an error message about something in MCC not operating properly with Diskeeper lite. Since then large amounts of file space are appearing as fragmented (red), even though the report says that the disk is fine. At the same time, the available sapce on my hard drive has decreased to about 10% (from about 40%). I have tried to open MCC but could not decipher what to do with it. I also downloaded the newer trial version for Diskeeper and got the same outcome- including a warning about volume space. Since diskeeper will not let me look at the drive map I cannot see what the files are that are appearing. I am runni…

Speed up Vista boot by using two cores
by Guest Carlos- 5 replies
This article http://www.techwarelabs.com/articles/editorials/dirtyvista/index_2.shtml Step Three, items #1, 2, and 3 states that Vista normally uses only one core during boot, even if you have a dual or quad core processor, and that by enabling the additional cores you can get a boot time reduction. I will quote the important part: "Click on Start then type "MSCONFIG" hit enter then click continue through the UAC we talked about earlier. This opens a small screen containing some interesting startup options, playing with this will allow you to start and stop most things that run in the background. The startup tab tells you which company each service belo…

I have had XP pro for several years and have been quite happy with its performance. I also have every MS update installed. This may be good or bad for the following reason. Immediately after the latest update, a new icon appeared on the bottom right for "My Documents". No problem with that except I did not create it !!!! Update, maybe ??? My big problem is that ALL cd's either blank or partially populated now show as FULL and I am unable to create a new folder or add files. Very strange. Can this be corrected, and how or am I on my way to VISTA ??

XP, SP3 - Office 97-Word Print problem
by Guest D. Kirkpatrick- 3 replies

Windows XP, SP3. All Updates and patches as offered to date installed. Today being August 31, 2008 HP USB port printer CS3100 series. I have licensed copies of Word 2002 on this system as well as an older version of Office 97 that includes Word, Access, Power Point, and the rest. Well... recently Word 97 has ceased printing. When you commit something to print, it is sent to the printer queue but just sits there. When we look at the printer spool queue it says "spooling" and does nothing. At the same time I was having a problem printing from Word 2002 but learned that there may be a problem with the "normal" template. After resetting the normal…
