Windows XP looking in wrong directory for desktop background files
by Guest Not4U2Know- 4 replies

I have Win XP Pro XP3, and as a result of trying some changes to fix another issue with the Quick Launch bar, now when I go to change the background image for my desktop (wallpaper), the selections are not coming from C:\WINDOWS as they are supposed to, but from another directory on my PC that contains pictures (.jpg and .gif). It's not even looking for bitmaps. How can I force the OS to look in C:\WINDOWS? I've checked everything in the desktop properties screens/tabs and cannot find anything there. There must be a registry key that controls this option. Thank you.

we just converted our windows 2003 file server over to a vmware server. since that time I have had issues with users accessing certain folders. I even have issues such as certain folders in our Public folder are denied, while others are accessible, even though the Public folder itself is set to be accessible to all. other people lost access to their my documents, even though all rights appeared to be correct. that is appeared. the only errors I can find are a lot of pre-authentication errors such as the ones below. any hints where to look next? Pre-authentication failed: User Name: simpson User ID: mydom…

MSXML 4.0 SP2 Installation Problems
by Guest Craig- 3 replies

It appears that my MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978 and KB936181) are corrupted as well as my .net framework installs. A very important program is not functioning and the tech support over there suggested that these programs may be the culprits. When he attempted to uninstall and reinstall them we got error messages on them all. He was right. For KB927978 it says, "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'msxml.msi' in the box below. Use source: e:\1c36409ef7fec974e1476d5c53\" This one is so frustrating because I ca…

USB external floppy disk drive will not work
by Guest bijobe- 3 replies

Device Manager shows up with yellow ! in my external floppy drive...click on and get driver info: Driver (Service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionally. (Code 32) I am simply going around and around...since it is a system32 driver problem. I can uninstall the driver but must reboot to complete, then WinXP finds the hardware, but get msg: Have installed your hardware, but, a problem with installation may prevent your hardware from working. And, sure enough, same thing. I cannot delete driver, replace, since it is a system driver. I need this floppy drive to use some disks I had for previouis co…

I am trying to fix a very specific issue. A client of mine is running Windows XP, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Works. The computer is about 2 years old. There is a HP LaserJet 1012 attached via USB. I can print normally when I use Microsoft Word or Notepad. When I try to use Works, the red light flashes. I have to press reset and then the document will print. The HP Printer is setup as the Automatic Printing option. How do I fix the red flashing light problem?

Error running scheduled task, Windows Server 2008

I am setting up a new fileserver on a Windows Server Standard 2008 machine. The machine is currently running in evaluation mode. I installed it on 9/11/2008. On our existing fileserver we have a data replication script that copies data from remote office fileshares to the local system for backup every night. I have copied the script to the new fileserver, making one change to the path (the target for copied files is on the C: drive instead of the D: drive now). Here is the script: robocopy \\aa-dc1.company.local\share c:\datamirrors\AA /R:3 /MIR > AA.Log robocopy \\gr-dc1.company.local\share c:\datamirrors\GR /R:3 /MIR > GR.Log robocopy \\tc-1…

Hello, Just making sure I am not confused. I have created shortcuts to a few departments share and placed it on a common share called --> \\fs1\depts$. The departments shares have been locked down (shares/security) and only allowed users of that department access. On the shortcuts created, I also locked down to allow only people that have access to the shares. shortcut security set ------------------- * Read & execute * Read share security ----------------- * Read & execute * List Folder Contents * Read Question: the shortcut securites set are independent of actual securities set on the shares? Just making sure. I have t…

After Windows Update, PC will no longer connect to wireless networ
by Guest knight_tour- 2 replies

My XP Home Edition PC has worked fine for over a year, but two days ago it was running fine when it got the typical notification of automatic Windows Updates needing to be installed. I let them install and the PC rebooted, but once it came back up it would no longer connect to my wireless network. The wireless card looks fine, and it can SEE the wireless network; it just won't connect to it. I attempted System Restore to a couple of different dates, but it failed each time. I also tried to use Add/Remove programs to remove the updates, but each of the updates says it cannot be removed! Since the updates were acting similar to a virus, I scanned for vi…
