Where to get Microsoft Bob for XP?
by Guest Flat Earth Society- 8 replies

Why doesn't Microsoft sell Microsoft Bob anymore? I used to love the way it made Windows look and want it for XP. Apparently Bill's wife was the product manager for Microsoft Bob when she was still just his girlfriend. Look, it's great and I miss all the friendly animals to click on.

Our PC when we try to start it, hangs up with a message "installing PBR 2....done" running various diagnostics didnt show any hardware faults. I've re-installed windows from the Cd and all seems to run OK. The message still flashes up when booting but the PC starts up OK. Just curious if anyone knows what this means and is it likely to prevent the PC from starting upagain in the future.

Redirect "raw" print to different LPR/LPD system
by Guest smlunatick- 0 replies

I have an application (faxing) that captures the printing thru the standard LPR/LPD protocol. It works find when send from Linux based servers but not well with the Windows print queues. I need to redirect the "raw" data stream from a shared Windows printer (\ \PC1\prtfax) out to an IP address (\\192.168.1.1\fax) without having a Windows printer driver "formatting" the data. How can I do this?

Different IP for different users
by Guest Simone Navari- 4 replies

Someone knows if on XP Professional it's possible to force that ip traffic, originated from different users contemporanely acive (fast user switch is active), has different ip addresses, maybe forcing the physical output interface even if it isn't a must. Probably it's a little strange request and I'm not pretty sure that it is really possible (pheraphs in theory...) but I thinked to ask to someone with better knowledge than me before to surrender to evidence. Thanks. Best Regards, Simone Navari

On a client (xp sp2), I set a server(w2003 sbs) folder (something like \\sbs2003\custdocs) as available offline. I've left default options (synch at login and shutdown) and actually the files are synchronized correctly. The issue is that the synchronization form appears two times: - immediatly after login - again after login scripts are executed and desktop icons appear Is it correct? tnx ago

CTMELODY wave file volume level
by Guest Ed Wood- 7 replies
For years, going all the way back to Windows 3.1 (I am now running Windows XP Pro SP3), we have lived with the loud volume of the CTMELODY wave file that plays when Windows Starts. After Windows is up and running, the volume controls take over, and you can adjust the volume of everything, except the volume of CTMELODY, which runs in the boot process before the volume control settings are loaded. If you decrease the volume control on your speakers so that the CTMELODY wave file is at an acceptable level, you then have to readjust the speaker volume controls (provided you have speakers with a volume control knob), so that the rest of the audio is loud en…

DHCP Question
by Guest Glenn- 2 replies
If this isn't the appropriate newsgroup, please let me know which one is. I have a Windows 2003 Server that I use as a DHCP (amongst its other roles). The computers in all departments get their IP addresses from it. I'm looking to change that a bit. I want each department to have its own pool of IP addresses available. I can setup my switches so that each is on its own VLAN. I'm just not sure how to setup the DHCP server so that the scopes are tied to a particular VLAN when the server itself only has one connection to the switch. Hopefully I'm clear here with what I want to do..if not please ask. Thanks.

I got this machine off ebay with XP already installed. When I look under "documents and settings", there seem to be a lot of user folders with basically the same set of subfolders i.e. Application Data, Cookies, Desktop, Favorites, Local Settings, My Documents, NetHood, etc. How many sets of these are there supposed to be? Right now under documents and settings there are 7 of these folders - Administrator, All Users, All users.windows, Default User, Default User.Windows, mike, Mike.Mike-(followed by some nums and letters), Mike~1~MIK Except for the last one Mike~1~MIK, they all have many of the above mentioned subfolders - Favorites, Local Settings, etc. …

My boss installed Ubuntu and XP64 on this machine (This is an EVGA nForce 4 Mainboard with AMD Athlon64 with one SATA drive) but there was no room on the working (Yes XP was working) XP partition to install anything on it. So using the install program from the CD I removed all partitions then created/formatted one NTFS partition. Upon first reboot from the install program the screen said: ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt. I ran the install again on existing file system and got: NTLDR is missing. The system cannot boot. I just completed a PC-Doctor diagnostic with no errors found. I ran the install again on the existing file system and got: Windows could not s…
