Windows Search 4.0 not working
by Guest mark- 3 replies

I ordered my new Dell laptop with Windows XP Professional, and one of the features I particularly liked was the Windows Search feature (it came with Version 3.x - I can't remember the exact version) as it was fast and remarkably accurate. However, the first time I took my laptop and my external hard drive on the road with me, Windows Search quit working. A Dell tech suggested I uninstall and the reinstall version 4.0, which I did. It says it's there, and it says it has indexed all the files on the computer, but any time I try to search anything it just tells me "Nothing found in All Locations for query ...". Any suggestions?

My computer is in a bad situation. almost all icones on the desktop, all programs at the menu (start, programs...) and all icones in the control panel do not function. the message I get when I try to use them is (translated from French): "no program is associated with this file to execute this action. create an association using the application file option in the control panel" I tried to do system restoration but it responses the same way. I think that the problem started when spybot asked me if I authorize changes in registery and I replied no. since than I can't open any program or utility (luckily explorer stil works) Does someone have an idea how can i…

Thumb Drive Issues
by Guest Starfish- 2 replies

Hello, I have a client running Windows XP Pro SP2. We just swapped his PC and now he can't get any of his thumb drives to be recognized. He has three thumb drives that showed up fine on the old PC. I think they had random drive letters like I:\. His current PC has C and D used by the hard drive, E:\ by the CDROM and F:\ G:\ M:\ R:\ S:\ by mapped drives. I moved the CDROM to drive Z which allowed one thumb drive to grab drive E:\. However, I still can't get the other 2 thumb drives to show up. I already applied a patch from Microsoft that seemed like it addressed this issue - but it didn't. The patch was from KB297694. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Print Confirmation Popup
by Guest Ian McCulloch- 10 replies

Hi all I am sure the bulk of the questions behind this topic are concerned with how to turn it off. But we print over a WAN and I need to ensure the successful print popup window appears for users who print to remote printers in other geographical locations. 1. I use HP printers everywhere with internal jet direct cards. 2. On both my Windows print server and the advanced print properties on each terminal server i have the following set under print properties>advanced tab: "Show informational notifications for network printers" and "Notify when remote documents are printed" Is there any other setting that could override these settings? Are the …

Single server scenario workable?
by Guest anthonyx26- 6 replies

I have some clients who, for budgetary reasons, only have a single server (WS2008) in their office but would still like to have the benefits and security of using TS for their employees. Is it possible to configure a single server as a locked down TS (using GPOs) for use by multiple remote users? It's currently not configured as a domain controller, but I suppose could be. I realize a single server is not ideal...in fact I always recommend and have always configured scenarios with at least a separate TS and DC and file server. - anthonyx26

can't move the 'Recent docs' folder
by Guest Tim.T- 3 replies

Even though I have been able to move the location of the 'My Documents' from C-drive to G-drive, it won't let me move the 'C:\Documents and Settings\User\Recent' folder. Everytime I edit the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders' key to change the default location of 'Recent', it changes back to the default location after I reboot. Any recently opened documents still appear in the default folder rather than the new location: I just want to move it to another root drive, V: (another partion). TweakUI doesn't list the 'Recent' folder among its 'Special Folders'. I've checked my firewall options in case i…

Calling techies regarding OS lockups
by Guest Terry R.- 8 replies

I've got a workstation that is randomly locking. If it locks at all, it will usually lock in succession two or three times within a five to fifteen minute period when first booted in the morning. Then the rest of the day it's fine. So heat isn't the issue, as all fans are working properly and the case vents are all clear. The power supply is pretty new and is working within its voltage range. I've swapped out the video card. Memory has been tested repeatedly. It is virus/malware free, I'm absolutely sure of it. I first attempted updating all drivers. I thought I made progress but then it started again. Next I started removing items that would l…
