No tab in control panel to open "background" or "screen saver"
by Guest Gymkhana Sensei- 3 replies

Recently I got the "blue screen of death" and since then, I lost my background tab and my screen saver tab and cannot change either one. I purchased the windows live one care package and that didn't help to fix this problem. How do I find out if they have been erased? Or are they just hidden? Is there a way to reload them? Or would I have to take my comp to a technician and have them reload windows. thanks

shift-delete not working the _first_ time
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 23 replies

I usually delete files (folders too) with shift-delete rather than delete; you know, so it says "are you sure you want to permanently delete" rather than "are you sure you want to ... recycle bin" (and with a different icon). Thing is, nearly always, it doesn't work first time: it usually comes up with the recycle bin prompt. To which I say no, then shift-delete again, and it comes up with the right one. It's only on this one machine, and I'm pretty certain it _isn't_ a dodgy shift key - my fingers move very little between the first attempt that fails and the second that succeeds. Any idea what's causing it? (I know I could change it - I know the…

Downloaded files -- why does their size depend on the computer?
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 5 replies

Each day I download the identical mp4 video file with program Miro.exe to a laptop and to a desktop PC. On the desktop PC the file size is 441 MB. On the laptop the "same" file is 115 MB. Both PCs are running Windows XP. Desktop=XP-Pro, Laptop=XP-Home. The difference in file size is consistent day to day. What might explain the difference in size? Stan Hilliard

Re: Saving Folder View Settings - Further

Re: Saving Folder View Settings - Further I may have read one too many threads today, but I have not found a solution to: When I run WindowsExplorer (.exe), the My Documents folder is always displayed 'opened' (with all of the subfolders displayed). "Tools/folder options/apply to all folders" seems to apply only to the "view" that is selected, not whether the folder is open or closed! Am I missing something here? (should I re-read a thread or two?) "RobRW" wrote: > Thankyou Ed. That worked. Set the default just as you said and then > customised the individual folders. Settings are now remembered. Problems Promoting Windows 2008 Core to Domain Controller
by Guest Marks70- 3 replies

Hello, I am not having any success trying to promote my Windows 2008 Core server to a domain controller. Everytime I try to promote it, I get the following error: "You must specify the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the domain in which you want to add this additional domain controller." I'm definitely specifying the domain in the unattend file. Here is the contents of the unattend file I'm pointing to: [DCINSTALL] UserName=test.local\administrator UserDomain=test.local Password=Password SiteName=Default-First-Site-Name ReplicaOrNewDomain=replica DatabasePath="C:\Windows\NTDS" LogPath="C:\Windows\NTDS" SYSVOLPath="C:\Windows\SYSVOL" Instal…

moving file server to new domain
by Guest Mizzleman- 3 replies

Hello, I need to migrate a few file servers from one AD domain to a new AD domain. We will be using a 3rd party tool to set up the user accounts and groups in the new domain based up on the structure of the old domain. How can I easily set up the permissions on the files, folders and shares on the file server in the new domain once I move it over? I would prefer not to have to manually visit each folder and share and set it up with the new domain permissions. Thanks.

Downgrade from Vista to XP Pro problems...
by Guest rwbyshe- 7 replies

Am working on a Gateway MT6840 laptop with a SATA hard drive. I've already erased the hard drive with Gateway's GW Scan512 per their tech info. Have also run Killdisk and written all zero's on the HD. 1. I'm unable to format it to the size or nearly the size of the 160GB hard drive. Each time I run fdisk and specify a new format, it only givies me a Primary Disk Partition of 15262 MB. 2. XP Pro does not recognize the hard drive at all. When I let the XP Pro disk boot up in the CD drive it gives me an error message as follows: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and pr…
