Games for Windows
by Guest Dan- 8 replies

I am puzzled as to why some games will support Windows 2000 but not Windows 98 Second Edition. Is the reason just because Windows 2000 still gets updates for its video and sound drivers and is still officially supported by Microsoft and/or are there other reasons. I look forward to your replies.

Hi every one, I've been experiencing a weird problem with my computer recently. When I turn off my computer, the light on my monitor will go from green to the orange standby state and the computer will shutdown normally. But after 60 to 90 seconds, my monitor light turns on green again and the power 'on' light on the front of my tower flickers really fast as if the computer was turning on and off and on... I can also see the fan at the back of the computer turning. Any idea? I my computer corrupted? thanks, tbof

Windows XP Network Issues
by Guest Bruno De Barros- 4 replies

Hello. I have three computers. A desktop with Windows Vista, a laptop with Windows XP and another desktop with Windows XP. I have been messing with everything, trying to make this network work. Sometimes it does, other times it doesn't. It's an adhoc connection, as I do not have a wireless access point. The two desktops have a wireless adapter, and the laptop has it's own built-in adapter. I can connect my Vista with my laptop, but only sometimes will it work. I don't know how it starts working or not, it's just by chance, after some rebooting on both ends. My Windows XP Desktop doesn't even get the network. I think it's because of the range of the adapters. …

Creating a custom Start Menu on Win2003 TS
by Guest Sandy Wood- 13 replies

I'm working through creating a custom Start Menu for my Win2003 TS users. I copied some shortcuts to a folder on the TS, on D:\custommenu. I'm looking to create a Group Policy to redirect the Start Menu folders. I've experimented with the various options in Folder Redirection and can't settle on what's suitable for my situation. All my TS users will be using local polices, no roaming. I'd like them to see my custom Start Menu and would like the policy not to apply to Domain Admins. I thought I could apply the Deny options for Admins in the Delegation tab of the policy so Admins would see the default menu. Does this look like it will work? -- Sandy Wood …

FAT32 or NTFS for backup?
by Guest Joe Starin- 9 replies

Fast question: Have a Dell 8600 laptop with an NTFS file system. Want to back up the laptop to a Western Digital external hard drive that I believe is formated FAT32. Can I do this? I've heard that if you want to back up data from one hard drive to another, the formatting of both drives must be the same. Is this true? Thanks. Joe

Roaming Profiles and Office
by Guest TheScullster- 1 reply

Hi all Can anyone tell me if I'm likely to get problems mixing Office versions in a roaming profile environment? To put that in English, we are generally running Office 2003 on our desktops with roaming profiles enabled. I have recently aquired a laptop for one user which has Office 2007 installed. If he shifts between the two platforms with them hooked up to the network, will I get profile conflict issues? TIA Phil

Adding a machine to the domain using an alternate token
by Guest Bill The Cat- 0 replies

I work for the Federal Government, and we use alternate tokens for our elevated privilege accounts. Currentlt, we do not know of a way to allow our Level 2 desktop support technicians add a new workstation to the domain without using a username/password combination. The alternate tokens are tied to their elevated accounts and work for typical runas functions, but we can't make it work to add computers to our domain. Any assistance would be great!

Windows XP, Home Addition, SP3, all updates in place. Just finished completely rebuilding my laptop, and everything seems to work correctly except. I have to log off twice now to actually log off. Does the same thing in safe mode. Task Manager says no processes are running. When I log off the second time laptop logs off correctly, and all is fine. No messages of any type are given anytime. Am I missing a setting somewhere? Thanks.

How can I delete an account that I can't see?
by Guest spamlet- 10 replies

On our XPHome laptop, there is an account which is not listed in the control panel users accounts, but still has a profile associated with it. It does not show up in TweakUI either. Only comes up with (ctr alt del)x2. Want to delete it (the account, not the profile), and replace it with a visible one but don't know where to find it. In Home there is no Advanced User Management console in which to look for more information about this invisible user. Is there another way to show this information? Presumably the invisible user account is a registry key somewhere that needs to be deleted. Where are the user id's held and how do I identify which to del…

Hi, here is an issue my company desktop support cannot solve. When I am on the network at work, and I create and organize folders and shortcuts on my desktop, they do not show up the same when I log on locally off the network. The folders, incons are all there when I log on locally, but they are not positioned as a mirror image when I log on locally. I only have one user profile with admin rights and log in the same way all the time. My desktop settings are Align to Grid and Show Desktop Icons. Simply put: When I create a new folder on my desktop, it shows up when I log in locally and on the network. When I position the folder on a certain place in …
