Usb drive faster than internal drive?
by Guest spamlet- 4 replies

Browsing through the thread on Fat32 vs NTFS for back up, I am reminded to ask about the unexpected 'bonus' I got when I bought a couple of MyBook 500gig usb drives for back up. In the first place I was a bit miffed to find there were no on/off buttons and only one type of input connection permitted at the back - USB - when I had expected there would be ethernet and firewire type connections possible too. I think I would go for the 'world edition' next time. Secondly, I had been led to believe that drives connected by usb would be slower than internal drives; and, indeed, some people have advised imaging the internal drive and then replacing it with o…

w2k3 Server Home directory duplication
by Guest Sarconastic- 0 replies

I have 2 sites each running Win 2k3 Server with a common active directory using a VPN tunnel on our firewall to connect the two sites. At site one we have an external VPN server setup to allow our remote locations to log in and access Docs etc. At each site we have the users home folders for that site setup up in a data folder at that location. An example is Site 1 User A, B, and C each have a home folder under \\server1\data\A etc - Site 2 User D, E and F, have a home folder under \\server2\data\D etc. We didn't want to sync all the home folders bwteen the sites to save space on our servers. The problem I have is that a half dozen or so users travel back an…

Windows printing architecture

Hi. Can anyone point me to a good source of information that describes the Windows printing architecture in detail, how all the components fit together and interact, and what the interfaces between them are? I'm interested in: - Any libraries an application that prints uses - GDI - The spooler - Print providers - Printer drivers, including universal printer drivers - Port/language monitors - Local vs remote printing - EMF vs XPS I have an article from The Code Project and Brian Madden's guide to Terminal Services printing. Thanks.

periodic desktop icons moving?
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 9 replies

From time to time, the icons on my desktop rearrange, all to the left. I do not have auto arrange icons set. I have Ez-desk, so it's not a major problem to put them back where I want them, but it _is_ irritating. It seems to come and go in phases, and I've had it on at least two machines. At the moment, I can't remember when it last happened on this laptop; on my desktop machine, it tends to happen at least once per session, within about ten or twenty minutes of booting. Any idea what's causing it? -- J. P. Gilliver. UMRA: 1960/<1985 MB++G.5AL(+++)IS-P--Ch+(p)Ar+T[?]H+Sh0!:`)DNAf ** http://www.soft255.demon.co.uk/G6JPG-PC/JPGminPC.htm for thought…

Folder view settings revisited - again
by Guest Alpha- 2 replies

One computer is driving its user nuts - it will simply not retain folder view settings in Explorer. All the usual methods have been employed - TweakUI, Views tab on Folder Options, Save User settings tweak from Kelly's Korner, and deletion of Bags and BagsMRU keys in the ShellNoRoam section of the registry. Nothing seems to work. Only thing we found was that the deleted registry keys would be regenerated at boot - and then opening Explorer it is found that the view has reverted to Tiles and sorted By Name which the user does not want! This started last week on a fully updated Windows XP Pro SP2 machine but no system settings modified in months. Inexplicably seem…

System Error When Leaving Hibernate
by Guest Simon- 9 replies
I run XP Home SP3 and IE7 and AVG 8. Almost every time the PC wakes from Hibernate a 7011 error is created as follows: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7011 Date: 05/10/2008 Time: 15:06:07 User: N/A Computer: XXX Description: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service. I have spent many hours googling this - it seems quite a common occurrence but no-one seems to know how to stop it and/or whether it can be safely ignored. Any thoughts, please?

ShowBiz DVD2

I have used this software successfully once before. Recently though the system is hanging once it reaches the authoring stage. It seems to hang a lot, even while trying to close it and doesn't respond. I have tried reinstalling it and repairing it and even getting rid of programmes I no longer use in case of conflict. The project is 1.42 GB so not too big for DVD. It came bundled with digital videocam software. I can't access their website for a number of reasons. Anyone help me please?
