Guess this newsgroup monitoring is somewhat like Congress. Asleep at the wheel. Wanna buy a watch? -- Dave How many people with "small savings accounts" closed those accounts in response ot recent ecomomic news... Circumstance - Venezuela closing its doors to U.S. ambassodors. Shortly afterwards, a hurricane enters the Gulf coast in vicinity of oil derrricks, and onshore that has oil refinement capabilities. Subsequently, the price of oil crude drops dramatically. The Russian version of Wall street is virtually failiing for some "unknown reason". A day later, the Russian Navy is having Naval exercises with the Venezuelan Navy. Are U.S. senato…

OS blown out @ logon
by Guest nosirrah- 7 replies

Installation of an update of a highly reputable anti-spyware programme has blown out my XP (SP3) at the logon stage with the rtlGina2.dll fault, (otherwise well documented). In addition startup in safe mode hangs at mup.sys and recovery console won't take my password. I have available the two possible 'fixes' but apparently no suitable access to run them so they repair the original OS. I have also: Vista on HDD1; and a (temporary, I hope) parallel XP installation on HDD0. Have I ANY simpler option tham creating a Bart PE disc (or the total reinstallation of apps, etc on the parallel XP or the Vista), please, anyone?? I fear this will be a two-letter a…

by Guest Sven-D- 4 replies

I am having a trouble with users home folders and offline folders. The issue is like this: when making a folder offline (either through group policy og by right clicking and selecting make available offline) I get the following error: "Offline Files (\\server\share): Unable to make 'share' available offline on \\server\users\username. Access is denied." The structure on the server looks like this: - users : shared folder, domain users full control (share permission) - username : subfolders with the name of the user. created automatically when the user is created in AD. According to an article I found, it is a permissions issue with the top-folder "use…

by Guest Jacky- 4 replies

I have one Windows 2003 server, which I would like to set it up so that clients (other Windows PC) can sync the time to it via NTP. I have set the server but when client trying to update the time, it said the peer's stratum is less than the host's stratum. Anyone has any idea of how I can overcome it? I don't see any stratum setting there. Thanks.

Repairing XP for HP devices
by Guest Vernon CThomas- 3 replies

I have worked with HP to uncover a problem with all of my HP devices ( they got flaky and HP techs made the problem worse and worse until they won't install at all ). I have been advised to re-install Windows XP but 1) my Dell-supplied reinstall disc has no key info; 2) I am on SP2 with countless security updates since original; etc., etc. My only problem is with the HP-related files and drivers. Is there some method to do a repair without regressing? It would take days upon days to get this system back if I uninstall and attempt to reinstall from scratch.

Displaying a Photo as Desktop Background
by Guest PT- 7 replies

I have two monitors: one is a 4:3 on a desktop and the other a 16:9 laptop monitor. I want to use a .JPG file from a 4" x 6" digital camera photo as the desktop background on the laptop. But when I set it up by right clicking on the desktop, selecting properties, and browsing to the appropriate .jpg photo file, the resulting image is stretched out, distorting the photo in a manner similar to what appears on sports bar HDTV sets. I assume there's a way to retain the correct aspect ratio, leaving a pair of "black" bars at the left and right ends of the photo. How to do it? -- PT

by Guest JM- 1 reply

The drwtsn32.exe file is the one that opens when a program generates an error and you get a message saying "something.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows." If I set a program to stop this one from closing other processes, will it mess up the operating system, or is it safe to do? Thanks, JM

Thanks in advance.

Whats the best way to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy of XP? I do have a USB drive large enough for the OEM version of XP.

LDAP and surfing
by Guest ki4zji- 8 replies

Here's the problem... One of our installations is having what appears to be intermittent problems with internet surfing download speeds. We have replaced the DSL modem and thoroughly tested all the associated LAN hardware. The DSL provider has now responded saying: "I have taken a further look and it seems that your server (LAN IP: 192.168.0.2) seems to be using something called "LDAP" which tries to verify certain information before allowing your PC to bring up that webpage. This LDAP in your server is not recognizing certain pages correctly. I would suggest the following:" The address x.x.x.2 is, in fact, our windows 2003 server, however I fail to see h…
