System drive(C:) also mapped as J: ?!?!?!?!
by Guest spinlock- 3 replies

From Explorer, I see a second instance of the system drive as J:. This does not appear on Drive Management screen, only C: associated wuth system drive there. Everytime I boot, XPSP3 claims something wrong with J:, it runs chkdsk and allegedly fixes a bunch of stuff, then it claims something wrong with C:, runs chkdsk and fixes a bunch of stuff. 2 Events are logged, one for each(C:, J:), claiming that they are corrupt and that chkdsk should be run. This happens over and over. What the F is J:? How/where do I get rid of it? Everything works OK, but having this J: and having "corrupt" NTFS drives is nerve wraking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Windows 2008 TS locking problem
by Guest Erik Kristoffersen- 2 replies

At the local school I have got the following problem with a brand new installation af Windows 2008 TS: Suddenly every session is halted when accessing the file server. When the problem arises, client sessions may be able to continue working, however when they access the file server, they will be halted. Problem can be cured by restarting the file server (which by the way is fully functional). Setup: HP ML350 G5p, 4 GB RAM, 2 x 146 GB HD is running Windows 2008 x64 (terminal server) HP DL320 G5, 4 GB RAM, 4 x 250 GB HD is running Windows 2008 x64 (domain controller, file server, TS license server etc.) Home folders stored on the file server, redir…

User account password on hard drive - removing access restriction
by Guest Lisa Berger- 4 replies
I am trying to rescue some music files on an old hard drive from a friends computer that doesn't exist anymore. I've placed the hard drive in an enclosure and am able to see all the files. Unfortunately, I cannot access his documents because he must have had a user account with a password that is "protecting" his documents (under documents and settings). Error message is "access denied". Any suggestions on removing the access restrictions and being able to read the files. Note, I can access all the other files on the hard drive, because they aren't protected by the user account password. TIA Lisa Berger NYC

Vista 64 bit or Windows XP x64 edition ? 1 2 3 4
by Guest Royston H- 79 replies

My 120 days of eval are nearly up. I have found the XP 64 bit version of windows the most stable and reliable version of Windows I've ever used and have had only one BSOD when I was overclocking my graphics card, so not really a microsoft o/s issue. I mainly use the computer for office applications, photoshop, video editing and playing FSX. Given that I can get an OEM copy of Vista 64 bit for less than the OEM 64bit XP pro, I am likely to run with Vista. I'd like to hear from people who have used both in anger and see if any valid arguements exist for sticking with XP, say it's considerably more stable etc, given that long term the future is with v…

SP 3
by Guest zzdave- 6 replies

Is it worth installing this new service pack? Apart from support until April 2009 is seems to cause problems mostly without offering much in return. I have Windows XP PRO fully updated - except for SP3 of course. This is just a straw poll really if you wouldn't mind giving me a quick yes or no If I decide not to go with it, how do you get rid of the update icon on the launch bar?

Hi all, I have the following problem: I have the following share on a Windows 2003 R2 server : \\netserver2003\d Now I need to shutdown the netserver2003 server. It will be susbstituted by a new server with a new name. But I need to preserve the above mentioned share because it is used by many computers. Can Dfs do that? For a short time both server will coexists. Can I move the share to dfs transparently without clients notice the move? If this can not be done, what else do you suggest? Any hint is welcomed Thanks in advance Sammy

Hi hope someone can help me with this. We rebooted the sbs2003 sp1 but when it restarted the routing and remote access stopped working. I have tried kb 840686 but that does not help. The event view error is: The currently configured authentication provider failed to load and initialize successfully. A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed. I also have other event view errors: The MAD Monitoring thread was unable to connect to WMI, error '0x8004100a'. And: Windows cannot perform filter check for Group Policy object CN={C3EA2FEE-C0F0-4D95-8B65-668D6A64B499},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=TrycareLtd,DC=local. Group Policy processing aborted. …

RE: WinXP SP3 INstallation

RE: WinXP SP3 INstallation Hello, I have recently received the SP3 upgrade. It does seem to have taken a long time for it to come through autmatic updates? Its sat at the bottom of my computer telling me to install it. I don't know how to get rid of it, so. I must try it... Having only very limited eperience, and only finding this newsgroup 2 days ago, I want to try and do the update myself. I've had a brief look at some of the advice posted here during September. I am very worried about the following: 1/ How to do a 'back-up' 2/ Safely installing without problems. Any advice must be in non-techie language please. Thanks for any help Allen

Intermittent SSL connection problems with IIS6 on Windows 2003 R2 SP2
by Guest Andrew Dancy- 2 replies

I'm tearing my hair out over a really annoying problem with a website hosted with IIS6 and would appreciate any help people can give. We've just had to migrate a website from an old Windows 2000 machine to a new Windows 2003 machine, and at the same time move it into a new hosting facility. Now we're experiencing problems with some users unable to use SSL to connect via https to our website. I'm not completely sure whether it's a problem with IIS, Windows, the firewall (a Cisco PIX) or the hosting facility, but I thought I'd start with the former and try to eliminate those as potential causes first. The website is at http://www.lovetts.co.uk and also at https…
