Hi, We are using roaming profiles, win xp on clients and windows 2003 on the server. I have a user who complains that the user's settings are not retained - when somebody else uses their computer. For example the resolution is affected. Is their anyway to lock down those settings so a default is used.

System Tray Arrow Missing
by Guest Keith W- 6 replies

This is a minor but irritating little fault that has cropped up on my wife's PC. I reinstalled Windows XP on the machine about a month ago to give it a larger hard drive and tidy up the crud. All has been well and it updated to SP3 satisfactorily some three weeks ago. Now, it has suddenly lost the little left pointing chevron at the left side of the system tray that allows you to open the tray wider to display the inactive icons. Any ideas how to get the chevron back please? -- Keith Willcocks (If you can't laugh at life, it ain't worth living)

MSDN Activation
by Guest chuskey- 2 replies

We ran into a situation with a customer and we're trying to figure out the best way to get them sorted out. They had a crash over labor day weekend and both of their servers went down. Their former IT guy wasn't doing everything above board and we're not sure exactly how the crash happened. They didn't actually have any Windows Server software on hand. Their old IT guy had set everything up for them and he is out of the country. Being labor day weekend the only thing we had access to was an MSDN copy of Server 2003. We used this to create the OS for the host server and also a VM server that acts as domain controller. Neither of which were activated.…

DNS Problem ??
by Guest Luca Rossi- 3 replies

Hi to all, i've a problem on my domain (Win2003 Server and XP clients): Often, if i ping a host it does not responds, but the IP that returns probably was previously and now no more working. Assumed that i know the correct IP of that host, if i ping the address with -a flag, it returns the correct hostname.... Example: 1) Ping p-crespi.alerva.local [192.168.15.115] con 32 byte di dati: ---> does not respond 2) Ping 192.168.15.83 -a --> It works and resolve P-CRESPIalerva.local.... Is it a DNS problem or a DHCP problem ? Thanks to everybody in advance Bye Luca

I lost (temporarily) IE, so I decided to do sfc /scannow. Soon after it started it asked for the disk for XP Professional SP3. Problem is that my system is XP Home and not Porfessional. Wen I inserted the Toshiba Recovery Disk in he drive, SFC told me it was the wrong one... Anyone knows what is going on? Is this a common problem? Thank you

strange SendTo and Recent folder issue
by Guest Tim.T- 1 reply

1)I'm the only user on this PC, the Administrator. I'm running XP Home Edition. When I go to the 'C:\Documents and Settings\Me\SendTo' folder there is only two items in it: 'Desktop (create shortcut)', and 'Mail Recipient'. But if I actually right-click an item and choose 'SendTo', I find there are 13 location shortcuts listed, including the defaults - all the others are partitions in my drive. I remember putting them there, but why do they show up on the right-click menu, and not in the actual 'SendTo' folder itself? The shortcuts are not hidden; I've checked (folder just says two items, none hidden), and they do work! They just seem to be absent from the folder.…

Hi, I set up a domain for my small network (first time). I added up some pc's to the domain without problems. Now I want to add up the printer and share it. I install the printer on the Domain controller server and then try to share it, but strangly the users can't find the printer on their local pc's. Anyone had this problem? What's the easy way to share this printer to everyone? Thanks.

XP Boot Issue, Strange Problem.
by Guest Jeff- 12 replies

Hello everyone, I am having a very strange XP reboot issue...I have XP SP3 and now whenever I need to reboot (I usually keep my machine on all the time) it starts back up...gets to the normal XP screen (with the moving bar) and then goes to a black screen and just stops. No error, no beeps, nothing. However, every so often it will actually boot up and then continue to work fine...until I need to reboot again. There's nothing in the Event Log and no other noticeable error....all data is good and all applications seem to work fine on boot up (when I can finally get it going again). If I hit F8 when booting, it seems to always be able to get into Safe M…

A colleage of minee added a monitoring program that when one of my terminal servers out of a farm of 8 using Windows NLB reaches 40 connections the monitor will drainstop the server until the active sesion level falls below 40 again. this causes the entire farm to converge each time a server is drained. My concern with this is (With supporting evidence, please) Does this affect the performance of the servers or the stabilty of them.

Video and the mouse
by Guest FrankO- 0 replies

Most come here to share problems as I have on hundreds of occasions. today I wish to share a positive solution to a video problem, shifting and flickering especially after moving he mouse or using the scroll wheel. On a whim, I decided to switch to another mouse having a little newer technology - a laser mouse. Well guess what sports fans - no more shifty-nervous-jittery video for me, just a very crisp, brilliant, and sharp display. This is a very simple thing and often overlooked, I suppose, but it worked for me.
