Apply Windows Key Combinations not working
by Guest Analog_kidd- 1 reply

My windows key combinations (alt-Tab; Winkey-R; etc) are not working in my remote desktop sessions to Win2003 servers. I have selectedthe option to Apply Windows Key Combinations within the client / Option / Local resources, but the setting never seems to take. The option is remembered between sessions or even reboots, and is saved in the default.rdp file, but it just never works. Any ideas?

Home directiories and folder redirection

hope someone can enlighten me here as i'm quite new to Terminal servers Is rootdrv2.cmd still valid in Citrix. If so do you still have to set it on every TS. I thought that TS home drive Group policy setting would now be the preferred opion. Leading on with the next question If users have their home drives mapped in ADUC say to H drive, is there a point in setting up TS home drive as the users would surely have 2 locations to keep their documents in??. My take is if they used pure TS then use the TS home drive If I mixture of 2 then Bothe ADUC home drives and TS Home drives but redirect theTS Home drive to the Users Home Directory Finally AppDa…

sp3 via Win Update vs downloaded file?
by Guest njem- 1 reply

I'm having trouble with a system I recently set up and just trying to eliminate things. Did a clean install of XP Pro w/SP2, then I have a downloaded file of SP3 (316M) burned on a CD and I ran that. Lots of quirky problems, Explorer problems, Office problems. I'm just going to start from scratch. But am I right that getting SP3 from Windows Update, or running that file (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe) doesn't make any difference? The other possible issue is AHCI. Very briefly, the system came with Vista, AHCI enabled. It would blue screen when I tried to boot XP install CD. I could switch to ATA mode but there was a driver available. A dell system, drive…

I use ntbackup for my backups. I have 5 scheduled tasks running 1 for each day so that i have a full weeks of backups. I radomly test the backup files by doing a restore of a few files. My problem is that when i go to restore i see all the backups that were done since 2003 and takes forever to find the backup that im looking for. How can i delete those old links cause the files dont exist? Also if a folder gets deleted the entire backup will fail cause the bks file has that folder in it. Is there a way to prevent this? Here is my friday backup (for example) command that i have in the task scheduler. C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\BackupS…

Terminal server: windows 2003 std Clients: Windows XP I want to block all local printers from loading into terminal server side, however still allow certain remote users the ability to load their local printers. What is the best way to do this? Can I set the blocking using group policy based on client computer names? Thanks in advance.

W2K8 printing

This question obviously comes up a lot in this forum, having searched. And while I'm pretty experienced in TS using Win2003, I've always implemented Tricerat's Screwdrivers software. I've had to do this because of the umpteen million different printers out there, and their lack of a built-in native Win2003 driver...while costly, it sure as heck beats attempting to install all the various drivers for the end user's printers (with only scattered success). But I'm interested in whether Win2008 has improved in this area. I have an environment in which all users are now using Windows Vista based PCs. I heard something about how TS in Win2008 can now auto…

My serial port, com1,(DB9) doesn`t seem to work anymore. Computer is a Dell laptop. I use the serial port to communicate with a MicroChip programmer and also hyperterminal. I am an electronics hobbyist and use hyperterminal to setup a few things in an embedded web server in my home. Try again after the other program completes."....How to find what this "other"device is? Here`s what happened to make it stop working. I installed a device(home automation wireless device) called an "X10 FIRECRACKER" It`s just a 1 inch s…

Logoff & Shutdown "Ending Program...."

EVERY SINGLE TIME my wife and I log off or shutdown our XP Home SP3, we get "Ending Program. Please wait..." and, possibly later, "This program is not responding..." when, to our knowledge, there is NO program running. How can we eliminate this inconvenience? Regards to those of you who pointed me to the solution of earlier problems. -- GP Leo

Windows must be activated.
by Guest Ray234- 1 reply

I have a user that was trying to open their PST file in Outlook, and it was showing that it could't be accessed. I tried to RDP to the server, and it gave me a message that "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can login... Do you want to activate now?". I clicked cancel last week when it happened, and it rebooted the server. All was fine after reboot. I clicked No today, and it logged off the RDP session. The user still can't access the PST file, and I can't RDP to the server. It is several years old, so it's not a new installation issue. Any ideas?

doesn't work: "Start the following program at logon"

Hi all. I have a Windows2003 terminal server, joined to my domain. This machine works great for many RDP users. I recently added a new domain user configuring the option "Start the following program at logon". The user logs on the machine, but he gains access to the standard desktop, the program I configure doesn't start at logon. I tried the same configuration of some other users who work fine, I tried to start the "notepad.exe" or the "CMD.exe"... nothing. The user always experience a standard logon. The setting on the "enviroment" tab seems to be ignored. The user is "clean". No particular policies or other settings are applied. I don't think t…

Permissions error - Windows Server 2003 R2
by Guest Mike- 3 replies

Hi folks, I installed a Windows Server 2003 R2 a few weeks ago onto our network/domain, and all went fine. It is not a DC, it is a member server. I'm not trying to install Symantec AV Server on it via a unc path from another server and got the below error, and when I copy the downloaded software onto the desktop and click on the setup.exe file, I get the same error message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I'm logged in as the domain admin, and this is the only machine I am having this trouble with. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike

How to format thumb drive as NTFS?
by Guest Paul Randall- 4 replies

Hi, I'm running WXP SP2 on a two-year old Compaq laptop. A month ago, I formatted three 2-GB thumb drives, one in Fat16, one in Fat32, and one in NTFS format, but I think I may have done this on another computer, perhaps with a Vista OS. I can write to and read from all three of these thumb drives on this laptop. If I right click on any of these three thumb drives in My Computer and choose Format, I get only two choices: Fat 16 and Fat 32 for 2GB thumb drives and only the Fat 32 choice for 4 GB thumb drives. Seems like I should at least be able to do a NTFS reformat of the thumb drive that is currently NTFS. I've seen other threads that talk about n…
