Desktop (read-only)

Community, I have a terminal server, each uses the Default User to create their standard profile locally. Once the user is created, I move custom icons to their desktop as they are needed. A TS shared profile will not work in this scenario, since desktop's may be different. I want to make the Desktop read-only, so they cannot use the context-menu to create new documents or save any material to their desktop. Forcing all saving to done to the network share. Termianl Server is a member server, using GP Loopback with replace to keep their settings unique for desktop/TS. I have tried to implement a login script at the GPO level for this group tha…

When the second monitor is gone ...
by Guest JMF- 11 replies

Here's a tricky one I can't figure out: I attach a second monitor, and extend my desktop onto it. Then I start a program (in this case it's PSPad, but there have been others). The program brings up a window on the first monitor. I drag the window over to the second monitor. I work a little, then close the program. At some point, I detach the second monitor. For example, the first monitor was my laptop and I take it on the road, leaving behind the second monitor at home. Now, having only the one monitor, I open that same program again. It puts its window on the non-existent second monitor (!) That is, it "remembers" where the window was when it last…

Windows XP Users login error
by Guest Derek Mak- 23 replies

I had a Home PC with XP prof on it, I had installed an additional harddisk with XP OS on it to this PC. After the installation, I tried to boot up my original harddisk withe the XP OS, when I start it up, it gets to the login screen correctly and I can log in with no issues. The problem comes in where after I log in, the desktop background image loads up, but none of the desktop icons, start bar or system tray. If I Ctrl + Alt + Del and go to Task Manager, I can run any program without any issues. I tried to login to all others users account, all having the same problems. How to solve this problems. Thanks Derek

XP checks intranet for local files first
by Guest Barry Goluboff- 0 replies

Hi, I have a laptop with Windows XP which is registered as a computer in a group on the intranet at work. When I try to open a local file, XP checks the intranet first. This is OK at work. But at home with a wireless connection to the internet, when I try to open a local file, XP tries to check the now nonexistent intranet and the delay in opening a local file is nearly a minute before it times out and the file is opened. Is there a way to alter this behavior? Thanks, Barry Goluboff

I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a Desktop with a 2.1gb dual core processor. I have two DVD burner drives. a Plextor PX712UP and a HP DVD Dual Layer Writer DVD 840d. I am also have installed Powertoy's Tweak UI. Both drives are set to Autoplay in XP's My Computer under the selected drive, and in Tweak UI. However, neither drive will auto start any disk placed in the drive(s). Not Audio Cd, DVD, or Program disk for installation of product. Does anyone have any suggestion what could be blocking the Autoplay feature? Thanks,

sort causes page faults on server machine
by Guest JÅns MÁrtin SchlÁttÅr- 0 replies

We have a win 2003 server which is accessed by multiple clients (around 10) by RDP. The machine has 4GB memory. When we start a SAS sort, the performance monitor shows a lot of page faults, but the machine has still 2GB memory available. Why does a process experience page faults when there is plenty of memory free? Martin

Remote Access to Windows 2008 Server
by Guest Patrick- 0 replies

We just install our first Windows 2008 Server. We find that when we use RDP to access it, it works as remote access (we haven't used /admin option). From the web, we learn that Windows 2008 supports 2 active session if TS is not installed. If it is true, we wonder why RDP session is a Console Session. Your advice is sought.

Rebooting a Vista laptop crashes domain controller!
by Guest Qu0ll- 6 replies

I am not sure if this is a Vista problem or a W2K3 problem so please forgive the cross post. I have a laptop running Vista SP1 and a domain controller running Server 2003. Everything works just fine until I reboot the laptop at which point the server freezes completely and needs to be rebooted brutally. There are no relevant or interesting events in the event logs of either machine and in fact the laptop goes on functioning normally with no apparent problems (except of course that it can't access files on the server etc.) after such an event. This is new behaviour for about a month now and was not apparent before then. There have been numerous changes (up…

Internet Explorer can't use proxy server on windows 2003 R2
by Guest James Matthews- 2 replies

Hi We have just installed 3 new Windows 2003 R2 servers with all the latest patches but we are having a problem using our proxy server via internet explorer. The servers can browse the internet when not connected to the proxy (when we open the firewall rules) but when we enter the proxy IP address and port into IE all access fails. Other servers in the same subnet can use the same proxy server and it is working correctly for all other machines. You can telnet on port 80 to the proxy and get the correct response so routing and firewall connections are working correctly. Any ideas as to how we can resolve this?
