Is there any advantage to Using Wins?
by Guest steve- 7 replies

I have win2003 server with about 15 XP clients. We use dhcp from a router. Is there any advantage to setting up wins on the server. It is my understanding that it is used for netbios clients. We dont install netbios on any of the computers. Would it be a waste of time to set up the wins on the server. Or does it do more than that. Would it help our network function better. If you ask "if it aint broke dont fix it" . Well the network does act up sometimes. Im wondering if this might help a little. Regards

RDP not working after Sept. patching
by Guest SG_Dan- 4 replies

I have a series of windows 2003 SP2 servers in a small domain, 3 are real hardware, and 3 on MS virtual server. During and after applying the latest patches to all of these servers, I'm noticing that in all cases I can no longer access my hardware based servers using RDP, or even Remote desktops. The error I receive on RDP is simply that "This computer can't connect to the remote computer." My primary workstation is Vista, but I get the same error running from a fully patched XP workstation as well, both are joined to the same domain. Has anyone else seen this behavior and hopefully found a resolution?

Searching for recent files?
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 2 replies

I'm doing some maintenance on my backup routines. I thought I'd search \Program Files to find any recent files that have changed, such as INI and CONFIG and LOG file etc, so that I could include these in my list of backups. Using the 'Specify Dates' box, I got what seemed a useful list of folders and filenames. But on closer examination of the folders (in the top part of the list) I found several that although their Date Modified was 17/09/2008 they did *not* contain any files of that date. I also found several files (in the lower part of the list) like xyz.ini, for which there was no folder called xyz. How can either of these things happen please? I assumed …

Can't access server via remote desktop connection
by Guest Mark Christensen- 17 replies

I have an XP machine that I use to remote into our server that's located in another part of the building. The server is running Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2. The server is set up to accept remote connections. Usually I can get in to it fine, but then every so often when I open the Remote log on box on my PC and click connect (after entering the log on info like normal), the Remote log on box just refreshes and won't let me connect to the server. Our fix for this has always been to reboot the server, then I can log in fine, but this doesn't seem right. Is there something wrong with our server? Or a setting that needs to be changed on it so I can …

Taskbar - how to move?
by Guest Blithe- 4 replies

W2K Help says - to move the taskbar: Click an empty area on the taskbar, and then drag the taskbar to a different location on the desktop. However - that never works for me. I prefer it at the bottom of the desktop but it jumps on occasion to the right side where I cannot drag it back. How do I get it back and lock it? (In the past, it jumps back to the bottom at random. Only once or twice I can recall that it will drag back but maybe that occurs about one out of 100 frustrating attempts - so I just live with it) Thanks - Blithe

Returning username rather than computername in 2008 server
by Guest robin4767- 2 replies

I want to use an application under Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) that uses the computer name as a unique identifier. To have this unique identifier under TS I need to return the username rather than the computername. This is explained under KB190159, but it seems that this is not working for the 64-bit OS. Does this KB article also apply to the 64-bit OS or is there another way to get this to work?

by Guest David Frank- 4 replies

The ONLY way I can view and delete individual cookies with WinXP SP3 is START -> RUN -> keyin: c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\cookies which allows me to view all cookies and delete individual cookies. When I try to move this operation to a more convenient desktop shortcut using the location that works in a run keyin, nothing happens on clicking the icon. How can I create a desktop shortcut thats equivalent to the run keyin?

Exporting/Saving GPO for TS moving to new domain
by Guest melickas@yahoo.com- 4 replies

We have a Windows 2003 R2 Server that is a Terminal Server in a SBS2000 domain. We are replacing the SBS2000 Server with a SBS2003 Server. In the SBS2000 domain/AD, we created an OU for the TS and created a GPO to lock it down for the TS Clients. We are going to move this TS into the SBS2003 domain (which has a different server & domain name from SBS2000) but we want to keep the GP we created for the TS. How can we do that? Thanks
