XP SP3 Home freezes at Welcome screen once.
by Guest Gis Bun- 6 replies

A friend has Win XP SP3 Home. Machine is almost brand new [under 4 months old]. There is only one user account. Out of the blue, when my friend booted up, it got stuck at the "Welcome" screen [the one with the "Welcome" word at the center of the screen]. And it sat there for about 25-30 minutes until I arrived. Had to do a hard shutdown [hold the pwer button down]. Rebooted and everything was fine. No flags in the event log or anything. Gis

DNS service causing DC to hang on reboot
by Guest Saral6978- 10 replies

*posting here and in the DNS forum* DNS is causing my Domain Controller (Win2003R2) to hang on reboot. It freezes on "Preparing Network Connections". To determine it was DNS, I booted into Safe mode and disabled DHCP and DNS. The server booted normally and I was able to log in. I then enabled DHCP and rebooted server and the server booted normally. After I logged in, I then changed the DNS service to manual and started the service and it started successfully and my forward and reverse zones came up (active directory integrated) and all AD errors were cleared on this particular server (I have a total of 4 DCs among 3 different sites). Problems …

Where is SP3?
by Guest John- 9 replies

I have Auto-update set for "Notify me but let me choose when to download." A month or so ago, SP3 was offered and I didn't dl it right away, just left the shield sitting there. About two weeks ago, I decided I had the time to install it so I clicked on the "Download." The shield went away and I assumed the update would be available for installation shortly. But two weeks later it still hasn't shown up. Is it normal for the SP3 update to take so long to download? Reply-to address is real John

Damn icons wont go to LIST mode
by Guest bobobobobob@myplace.com- 2 replies

I opened a folder in Windows Explorer. Went to VIEW, FOLDER TYPES, VIEW, clicked on "Like current folder". (Which I have set to view as LIST). I also unchecked the View as Webpage before saving. In Windows explorer, they all view fine. However, I have a shortcut icon on my desktop for each of my partitions. (example) Drive C Drive D Drive E CDrom, Floppy A etc. when I click on them, and open any folders inside, the files are being seen as LARGE ICONS. WHY? (this is really irritating). Thanks Bobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobobob -or just BOB.

Re-Install Mouse Driver
by Guest User- 2 replies

XP Media Center, Version 2002, Service Pack 3 Dell Dimension E520 I'm having some intermittent problems with my mouse, and I'd like to re-install my mouse driver. I've tried updating it, but when it checks the Windows website it says I already have the latest driver. So I'd like to uninstall the driver first. Question: If I uninstall the mouse driver using the mouse control panel, will I be screwed (i.e. will the mouse stop entirely?)? If the mouse stops working entirely, how would I do anything? Thanks.

Win 2003 wants to activate again
by Guest Jennifer- 6 replies
Hello After happily fileserving since before I can remember, my Win2003 server has decided it needs to be activated again. There have been no hardware changes. Every day or so for the last week, it won't let me logon until I activate. Sometimes it activates successfully; sometimes it says it is already activated, which, of course, it is. It frequently refuses to let me logon via remote desktop, although I can browse the file system.I have to reboot the machine to allow remote desktop. Then I get the activation thingy. Could the probs be related? Does anyone have any thoughts? Jen

Changing Dual Boot 1 2
by Guest Buffalo- 32 replies

Can I change my dual boot Win90Se-Win2000Pro to a dual boot Win98SE-WinXP? The reason I'm asking is that some of my games and newer vid cards require XP as the minimum, as do other programs. If so, what are the steps? Perhaps I would be better off wiping my HDD (after creating an image by Ghost) and then proceeding????? If I do a format, which OS should be installed first? Hell, I am just considering this. :)

Hyper-V weird ping results from guests
by Guest Dan- 3 replies

We have a Hyper-V cluster setup on our HP Blades and when a Windows 2003 Hyper-V guests pings itself the results are all over the place. Not really a problem until you start using SCOM to check ping availability now our SCOM falsly reports on slow pings replies. And when a Windows 2008 Server guest pings itself it says reply from ::1 which to me says it's using IPv6 but I have IPv6 uncheked for all network connections.

PC will not boot when mouse plugged in
by Guest John- 2 replies

Please note: I am not 100% sure of the details of this issue, however I thought I might post a message here. I recently gave a family member a microsoft wireless 6000 mouse with receiver. Installation was fine but when they reboot the machine it will not boot up (I don't know if it gets to POST but I would assume not) unless they unplug the mouse. Once the mouse is unplugged the machine boots up as normal. I'm not sure if they are using the USB plug or the PS2 plug... I don't have that information yet. I suggested that they try the PS2 plug instead of the USB, although on second thought, the USB plug would/should have 0 effect on boot, while the PS2 pl…

Old box set WinXP cannot install in new PC!?
by Guest herman- 4 replies

Hi masters, I have a new PC running Q6600 and P43 chipset motherboard. I also have a box set WinXP Pro which I used on my old PC (bought 2002). Now I want to use this pack to install into my new PC. Problem comes, when it loads all the drive for installation, blue screen appears. Then it held. My friend told me that it might because the old CD doesn't support new hardwares. What can I do? I tried to install it from another CD with SP2, but when I input the Product Key of the box set, it tells the Product Key is not valid. Please help! Thanks a lot@!! :( herman
