Logon fails on first attempt
by Guest Dave- 4 replies

Hi Folks, I recently got a new laptop at work (A Lenovo x60). I installed WinXP Pro, and everything seemed to be OK for a while. However, after a few weeks, the laptop developed this quirk. If I lock the computer, and attempt to unlock the computer, the first time I attempt to enter my password, it is rejected. The second time, it works fine. (Very rarely it goes to three, but I think these might just be typos.) This happens almost all of the time. If the time between logout and login is very short (less than a minute) then the problem does not occur. If I put the machine in standby, or walk away for a few minutes, I will always have to enter my pas…

Adding new Users - Terminal Server cannot create registry key
by Guest Kenneth Clebak- 1 reply

We are experiencing an issue in our Microsoft 2003 envirornment in when new users are created, we now need to run getsid, grant the user domain admin rights (Temporarily) log in to both of our terminal servers, and manually create the Windows Key within HKEY_USERS\<USER sid>\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. Any ideas of why this is happening and what registry permissions, if that is what it is related to, might need to be adjusted? -- Kenneth Clebak

Win XP PRO, very slow to shut down, why?
by Guest Sardine- 10 replies

My WIN XP PRO system runs fine except at shutdown when it takes 2 or 3 minutes to actually shut down after clicking the shut down icon. Nothing unusual was loaded when this started happening. A few weeks later I installed SP3 hoping it would fix things, it didn't. The hard drive LED stops flashing during most of this delay time. I also see some unusual static effect on the bottom of the video screen during this time. Looks like the screen was in transition and suddenly stops. Help JB

Software repair invoked by SP3
by Guest HPS Admin- 5 replies

I have a piece of software installed on PC's that is being corrupted by SP3. After successfully installing Service Pack 3 on to the PC you are requested to re-boot. During the re-boot the Windows Installer is invoked and our software is re-installed/repaired before the login screen appears. As the PC has no connection to our server when the software is installed, the installer corrupts the programs configuration files with invalid paths to files. I can correct the configuration files (text .ini files) after SP3 has done it's stuff but I would like to know what would cause the Windows Installer to be invoked in this way.

Changing Registry Size
by Guest John John (MVP)- 16 replies

Please adjust your clock and or Timezone, you are posting in the future. It seems to me like the limit is set pretty high. Usually when you get a Registry Size Limit warning an increase of 1MB is sufficient. If you set this limit too high it may cause problems with the way the memory pools are allocated, it's a long complicated story, suffice to say that you should not go crazy with the Registry Size Limit. What is the current size of your registry? Please do not use registry cleaners on your Windows 2000 installation! These cleaners do more harm than good, you have worked long and hard to set your machine to your liking and to have it purr like a k…

DVD - RW drive will not recognise dvds or CDs except blank cds
by Guest paaul028- 4 replies

Hi I am using Windows Xp on a Sony Viao. I burned a cd about a month ago using iTunes and ever since then when I insert a normal CD or DVD in the drive to try and play them or rip them they do not show up in any way. I have looked in my computer directly, in iTunes and WMP etc but the CD or DVD never show up the drive just show as empty. If I insert a blank CD or DVD my PC does register this. However when I try and burn something onto the DVD via any software application it always fails. Any help greatly appreciated as it means I cannot rip cds onto my PC at the moment or install any software that comes on a disc.

Show Start Menu's "All Programs" in two panes
by Guest hmm- 5 replies

When I select "All Programs" in the Start menu, the list of programs all appear in one column. This remains true even as new programs are added; that now I have to point to up and down arrows and scroll throught the list. In an earlier PC, I remember that the All Programs list would appear in two panes, not just one, making it easier to see all programs and quickly select any in the list. How do I restore this feature?

Desktop Not Loading Correctly
by Guest Chris Guimbellot- 7 replies

Hello, I am having a strange problem. I have an XP box on my network. When I start it up, it gets to the login screen correctly and I can log in with no issues. The problem comes in where after I log in, the desktop background image loads up, but none of the desktop icons, start bar or system tray. If I CTRL + ALT + DEL and go to Task Manager, I can run any program by selecting File > Run. I can run software, the browser, etc. Interestingly enough, I cannot run Explorer.exe. It says the program can't be found. I have tried to run the repair feature from the XP disk (not the repair console, but the one that repairs the existing installation) with no …

Is there any side/bad effect on the system if I register the same .ocx file more than once? eg. regsvr32 /s c:\myDir\ocx\grid32.ocx for 3 times or whatever.
